Carbon Plate in Golf Shoes

Recommended Posts

My son is a Cross Country runner and he only buys shoes with a carbon fiber plate in them

We are lucky enough to wear the same size at this time, and I will say that the shoes with the carbon fiber plates are very comfortable

Which gets me to golf shoes.

Does anyone know what golf shoes besides the Payntr X and the FJ Hyperflex Carbon have carbon fiber plates in them?

I am thinking that this will become commonplace in golf shoes in 2024.

The shoes are just way to comfortable not to put these plates in them.

I know they will make them more expensive, but when does that stop anyone in the golf business

Thanks for the help

The question has to be what advantage does the carbon plate give golfers?

I am a runner as well and the carbon plate helps energy return and reduces energy loss thus making you faster. I have a few carbon plate shoes which I only wear for pre-race runs and race day. Carbon plates are shown to alter walking strides and cause foot problems for people who wear them all the time which would be an issue for golfers that walk. I guess if they could make it where the carbon plate is able to absorb downward force and return it more efficiently you could effectively increase "ground forces" and potentially hit it further.

According to FJ:

The new custom molded carbon fiber plate and design maximizes stability and torsional flex increasing ground leverage and contact.

According to Payntr:

PROPULSION PLATE ALLOWS GOLFERS TO HARNESS GROUND REACTION FORCES MORE EFFECTIVELY.

I have no idea if any of this is true, I am sure it is just as true and every driver we make is 15yds longer than the last.

I guess we will see how many manufactures put carbon fiber plates into the golf shoes in 2024

My son wears the shoes with the carbon fiber plate only to run at practice or on race days.

I had no idea that they alter anything much less walking strides or cause foot problems.

I don't think carbon plates will be that popular in golf shoes. Footjoy with their 2024 catalogue just has the standard Pro SLX Carbon and HyperFlex Carbon, that's it. I can see the HyperFlex being the more popular of the 2 but that's about it. Also what they have in those shoes is a small plate and many probably don't want to pay the extra for something that small.

No, you don't need carbon soles for your golf shoes. You're not losing massive amounts of energy to your current TPU design, and TPU doesn't fatigue in a similar way to carbon. They carbon soles have limited life span if you are experienced with carbon plate racing shoes, and walking hundreds of rounds of golf is just a waste of money and material for zero return.

I don't think the comfort is from the plate. It's from the 2 inches of foam the surrounding it in because it needs space to flex.

Carbon fiber has been around in shoes for ages. I had it football cleats like 8 years ago. When you don't have padding carbon fiber is super firm and stiff. It's not for everyone which is why you don't see it in many shoes.

at about 11:10 in this video Padraig Harrington mentions carbon fiber soles in his shoes

If you don't want to spend $205 on those insole there are the SuperFeet Run Support Low Arch used to be called SuperFeet Carbon which are like 1/5th the price. They are quite stiff btw, have them in one of my pairs of golf shoes, forget which, need to find them now.

Carbon plated running shoes are extremely stiff. Like you can't hold the heel and toe and flex the sole much at all.  This property might be ok, maybe, for golf. Stability is good, right?

But the carbon plate in running shoes does deliver an energy return when your running and your full weight lands on them. I don't think it does anything for you while walking. I don't see how it would help much as a golfer.  My guess is this will not catch on, but who knows.

good to know, thanks for the heads up.  I'm a fan of Padraig's videos and when I saw this part of the video I was interested considering the ground force aspect... I was less interested when I saw the price.

Will it matter much to my game?  I have no idea...probably minimal.   When you are at Padraig's level, I suppose any little bit of advantage matters.   I wouldn't mind trying them though.. especially would be interested to see if it matters much when practicing on my sim as I stand on 2.5" of a foam rubber.

They do have a "Silver" insole that's $125 but still not cheap, the SuperFeet one is like $50 but it's just the heel to arch that is carbon but could be a good experience.

I do like a firmer feel in my shoes when I swing but want that cushion when moving around and not in the swing. Trying to mix a softer sole and firmer insole setup myself in golf to work the ground best I can.
