So I decided to make the simplest swing possible here's the results

Recommended Posts

This is the result.

Pretty much no plane shift (maybe tiny but very very minimal), shorter, simpler. Just as little moving around as possible.

Noticed this because I was starting hands low getting up to a good plane at the top but I never dropped the club. I didn't steepen it either, it just stayed there all the way down. Decided to just Dechambeau it and set my lie angles crazy upright to keep it at the plane that I naturally go to at the top of my swing.

So I start hands very high and extended with an upright club and just leave it there. So far so good, hit the ball very straight. It doesn't feel quite as "athletic" but I nail the sweet spot a lot more often.

Started to tinker with a very strong grip and a shut face going back and then just drag it through ala Dustin Johnson but it seemed odd and not easily compatible with the higher extended hands. It just felt odd.

Honestly, for the first time in a long time I don't really think I want to change anything.

I think I may want to really work on building up pressure on my front leg and extending out of it to gain speed but I can easily cruise at 87 mph with a 7 iron and 107 driver with this setup.

Not sure I see the point.

PS: I need to drop 25 lbs but king cake is a problem.

That’s a tidy swing. I like it.

Do you have the FO angle?

Beautiful looking swing, seems very efficient. You are playing golf to a plus handicap?

Barely a plus but work has killed my short game so probably not playing to that right now

Nice! —- but like Aunt Bea your freezer on the porch must be overloading your circuits unless it’s a disco vibe, lol, getting an odd lighting effect.

That's an effect of LED lighting on cameras when recording in slow motion.  In reality LEDs flicker at a rate that is imperceptible to the human eye but when captured at high frame rates it appears to flicker

Welcome to the world of single plane swings! 🤓

I am closer to the Moe Norman style.  When I tried Bryson, I couldn’t keep from going left.

Ya it can be a problem if you aren’t careful

It looks very simple and efficient. It also doesn’t look weird. Congrats.
How many degrees did you go upright on the lie angles?

Would you be able to accomplish this swing with conventional or standard lie angles?

You can try the swing with standard lies, but if you like it enough to play it, you'll probably need to migrate to upright lies.

Love it!  If we are pickin cherries and for the sake of commentary, I would be a lil concerned with that trail leg straightening.  I would get in a slightly more athletic position at address and really feel what that right leg is doing during the backswing and see if you could transfer weight/momentum more efficiently during the downswing. Not saying it's not efficient, just could it be more efficient.  But we are totally cherry picking here.  I'd love to see your driver swing.  Great swing 👏🏼

I'll play contrarian and say it looks like you're giving up 10-15 MPH for the sake of… simplicity? Plus what @Valtiel said.

Can't really do it with standard lie angles unless you want a very flat swing. Especially at my height of 6'4.

The point is many good players shift from a lower starting plane to a higher plane at the top. Then shifting back down is the hard part.

As a bad player I would just stay crazy inside and flat going back then go over the top.

As I got better I got more on plane going back and shifted from flatter to more upright plane at the top but I never mastered the shallowing move. I could shallow it but really had to focus and I would have issues with it. If I didn't focus on doing it I would still swing inside out but I had high hands. I have always struggled with that move.

So basically all I did is start on the same plane as the top of my back swing and stop trying to shallow it.

If the overall goal here is is to simply as much as possible then i'd be concerned about the early extension and extra hip moves going on:

Grant1.gif.633757afdb6987a57d1b4f742ff61270.gif

Your left hip comes out quite a bit in the latter half of the backswing and your trial leg is pretty locked out. I'd be curious to see a face on view to see how you're shifting pressure here, but the extent to which this brings you towards the ball is a bit of a concern.

Grant2.gif.c41fcd07b0a41fe82dda465051560e6b.gif

This is the main element i'm concerned about. This stand up/high right hip move is something that is likely to cause issues with the longer clubs if/when you try to apply power. It's part of an overall stall in your lead side rotation that requires you to regain right leg flexion and sort of "scoop" under with the right side down into impact:

Grant3.gif.dbcc454b6b277d65047e005cdaaadf17.gif

And brings your lower body further towards the ball. Manageable on low power short shots like this but i'd be concerned about the longer ones and what this might do to club path.

The feelings of "It doesn't feel quite as "athletic" likely come from the fact that, even though not severe, you're generally not pivoting with the lower half correctly here. Where the overall backswing/downswing sequence should be "right hip up/back -> shift -> left hip up/back" like the video @azgreg posted above of Kirk Junge above, you're "right hip slightly back + right hip stall -> left hip forward -> minimal shift? -> left hip slightly back + right hip up -> left hip stall -> right hip forward". It's both less efficient, has more moving parts, and brings you towards the ball. At low speeds this is a concern because it suggests that it's baked into how you rotate which runs the risk of becoming more pronounced as the clubs get longer and the forces bringing you towards the ball are greater.

It would be great to see a long iron and driver swing using this method to confirm though, as well as that face on view. 👍

Completely agree with this diagnosis. I have learned to play with this move and I do it fine but I definitely don't like it.

With this simple swing this is really my only swing fault that I imperatively want to fix.

Due to the hips going forward causing early extension or due to the single plane swing.

Not really

swing speed appears to be pretty much identical and I check it on track man and full swing regularly

a lot more sweet spot contact though 👍

The pitch of your shaft looks decent, the EE is not drastic. Sometimes you need to tread carefully.

Nice, simple swing, looking forward to seeing the face on.

I recently started down the single plane path, also to simplify things, and I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.
