2nd Hole at Augusta

You know the elevation and are aware of the green design - nobody is holding that green with a driver.

Green is only 17 yards deep, with a center ridge - but is about 38 yards wide.

Assume 320 yards for hole: For driver attack, drop shot on side of green away from ridge, and let ridge kill the shot as it runs across. These guys are pros - make them earn their $$$.

Here is Danny Willett's  description of current No. 7.

We all know what the design is, very shallow and tiered and an uphill approach - guys can have trouble holding a short iron - nobody is holding with a driver.

It’s the Masters not a circus.

Players have tried to driver the 3rd hole fairly recently. TW tried it one year he was in contention and it cost him when he hit multiple poor shots.

Here is a hole description of the 3rd.

Hole No. 3 – Flowering Peach

Par 4 – 350 Yards

At just 350 yards, the third hole is very much a drivable par 4. For some players, it’s even a 3-woodable par 4. Put plainly, the yardage isn’t the problem on this hole. It’s all about how it’s played.

With four fairway bunkers in play, many will lay up and opt for a good position in the fairway. But, that leaves a challenging short iron or wedge approach with the potential for backspin off a severely sloping green. Players that go for the green with their first shot will face the same challenge, just from a shorter distance.

Has anyone ever driver #3?  It's 350 yards up hill. Those who have hit driver hope to get close for an easy chip but usually ends up in disaster as they usually have awkward yardages and the landing area is so small that it gives even the best players trouble.  In no way was that ever a drivable par 4.

Ping G425 Max 9 wood Ventus Blus 7S

I feel like laying up is the move with a front pin. Much easier to hit a 100 yard approach shot where you can control the spin. As opposed to a 30 yard pitch shot with no green to work with. Also I think Rory drove it one year

What if golfers play a No. 10 Rivera strategy, and attack No. 7 Pampas by landing drive pin high to left or right. Then, use ridge to work long axis of green.

Work with me on advance planning, Hawkeye! If you get to play in Masters, there's no guarantee I can be your caddie...

Pretty sure Adam Scott knocked it to the back of the green

Riviera? I turn on the Masters to hear Bobby Clampett say "loblolly pine" not gum tree!

It's one approach for sure - if by some magic I got to play in the Masters, my daughter would be my caddie, but I'd have her schmooze Condi and get you an inside the ropes pass.

7 requires more thought!  Here is Adam contemplating the vagaries of the 7th in 2016.

Stevie's thinking, "If they'd made this drivable like @ChipNRun wanted in the design committee meeting this chump would still pull 3w like he did at The Open . . . . why did I piss off Tiger?"

The bunkering on 2 should be inside corner … that’ll help

iirc when I was there eons ago there is a small hazard left which they could extend all the way down the left side … sort of like a muted 13th …

keeping guys right will stop the speed slotting and make the hole play longer

alot of bad design takes

11 would be the better drivable hole at like 380. If you were to land it short and let bounce down the hill. Would be bring the water into play. Could tuck the pin in the front right or left ... so layup to a wedge would be a very difficult birdie
