Shaft Tipping Dispute

Recommended Posts

Hi all - wanted to come here and get some input on a driver shaft I ordered last week. The shaft in question is a Ventus Black for Taylormade driver. I received it on Monday, and today was my first time using it, and it just felt off. I came home and measured - it looks to be tipped an extra inch and that was not called out in the description; only “standard Taylormade length”. I messaged the seller asking to return it since it just seems like a misunderstanding to nobody’s fault; and he told me I was SOL because I hit it already. I value my reputation here and want to ensure I am approaching this from all points of views, hence why I was hoping to get some feedback. Thanks!

Would probably involve a Mod early and invite seller to this thread.

If you altered it in any way (new grip, changed tip, etc) it's yours. If you just screwed it into a head and took some swings - it's grey area.

Fundamentally, you didn't get what you thought you were getting. Tipping was listed as "Taylormade Standard" in the ad? Assuming yes, and it's more than...whatever TM standard is...then if the seller is a decent human - you should get a refund. It feels/sounds like maybe the seller didn't know it was tipped extra - which is in itself an issue.

I would personally offer to ship it back on my dime since it wasn't checked on arrival.

Driver: Callaway Paradym 8* (draw, std) - GD ADXC 7x

Irons: 3-5 Taylormade 2014 TP MC (2* weak);  6-PW Taylormade 2014 TP MB (1* weak) - Project X 6.5

SW: Scratch 54* bent to 53* - Ctaper 130x

LW: Scratch 58* bent to 59* - Ctaper 130x

Putter: Modified Odyssey 7 w/ welded long slant

Thanks for the input - to answer some of your questions: did not alter the shaft. It has been sitting here since it arrived on Monday. He did not specify tipping at all, only “Taylormade standard length”.
I would be totally okay eating the return shipping cost, without issue. I did open a PayPal dispute as a CYA, since the seller didn’t seem willing to help me.

Swinging the club a little and finding it’s radically different does not equal SOL, If you ask me. Especially if your feeling is backed up empirically with measurements. If I don’t know tipping for sure I either make that abundantly clear or research until I figure it out, don’t just say standard.

Not to make this any tougher for you, but if this shaft came directly from Taylomade then 1” is standard tipping from the factory for this shaft.

I thought Taylor made tipped all of their shafts 1” ?

So that would make shaft in question standard Taylor made, and not tipped more than that 1”, right?

Seems like some grey area here that should be asked by seller if not told or stated..

if it’s actually “standard” I’m sure you wouldn’t have any problem selling it..

Interesting that TM tips an inch “standard”, I didn’t know this so thank you both for sharing. Ultimately, I just didn’t know this shaft was tipped at ALL based on the listing and I was hoping for a clean return - no harm no foul from my side; but I took issue with sellers response so unfortunately here we are.

Yeah it's random but here's a link to another topic:

Yeah that's the rub, this *is* something would fall under the category of "standard Taylormade" which is a weird grey area for buyer/seller here. He isn't technically wrong, but you as the buyer are left slightly blindsided if you didn't know this practice. Taylormade has been doing this for many years and it's been discussed here consistently during that time, but that doesn't necessarily mean the burden was one you to have been in the know there. It's a tough one, honestly i'm more concerned about the fact the thing just flew off, but if all of this was a product of a "direct from Taylormade" build then technically the seller is the clear here, but with an asterisk.

Not any longer.

Theoretically all depends on when it was purchased, it is was direct from TM.

yeah that is standard for TM to tip 1", however recently, they have changed that policy.  If he said it's standard taylormade, he is not lying.  The seller may have ordered it as standard and as far as he is concerned it is standard.  If u asked for a untipped shaft, then u certainly have a case of false advertising.

On a side note, that red Ventus appears untipped

Taylormade used to tip ALL shafts 1" standard prior to like 1-2 months ago.

Just like Titleist tips all wood shafts 1" - many buyers dont know this as it's "from the factory" and there is no issue there and is considered standard.

Yes I 100% initially filed a claim because I didn’t think I was going to be getting a shaft that was tipped at ALL based on his description.

If the general consensus from the group is/was that this falls more on me, I am going to close the claim and just list it here on the BST.

Smart.  It's a bit of a bummer, but I think this is the way.   I know its per Fuji rec but, I never understood why TM would tip a VB 1". Sheesh.   Thank goodness they recently stopped this practice.

Maybe I missed it but did the seller say it came from Taylormade? Or just that it had a Taylormade tip and was standard length for their drivers?

Based off the post the OP had showing the sellers description, the seller should have noted tip trim, or at least that it was in fact a build that came direct from TM.

This was my main point throughout all of this, but I think it got lost in the discussion. Neither of those things were specified, hence why this all came about.

EDIT: Just to be 100% clear, I’m not upset at how this unfolded. However, he never specified anything outside of “standard length” and “Taylormade adapter”. I just felt like he could’ve heard me out instead of berating me over messages, since he didn’t know it was Tipped either.

Im with you. Maybe im crazy, but the seller should know that before listing something.  That’s just lazy on their part.
