2024 KPMG Women's PGA Championship (Jun 20 - 23)

Recommended Posts

Solid round by Amy, but that missed birdie putt on the 18th could be costly.

Going to be a Sunday funday. At least 9 players with a shot. Can't really rule out the players at 2 or 1 under, but they're going to need a crazy round.

@iBanesto Your statement that "Both are half Filipino too"

= new news to me i.e. Hinako Shibuno has FIlipino heritage?

Didn't find anything via googling "hinako shibuno" Satoru Nobuko "Philippines" (i.e. nothing in the Philippines publications, that would usually highlight such a factoid)

Meet Hinako Shibuno: 10 things to know about the Women's British Open champion

Bill Speros (August 4, 2019)

Dubbed the “Smiling Cinderella” by the media in her home country of Japan, 20-year-old Hinako Shibuno landed with grace and guts on the world golf stage with her victory in the 2019 Women’s British Open Sunday.

Shibuno quickly and effortlessly slid home a birdie putt on No. 18 to beat American Lizette Salas by one stroke at Woburn Golf Club in Milton Keynes, England.

At 20 years, 8 months and 20 days, Shibuno won her first major and her first LPGA victory in her first try at a major.

WOMEN’S BRITISH OPEN: Recap Results, Money

Here are 10 things of note to know about the latest Women’s British Open winner:

10. Shibuno had never played professionally outside Japan

The Women’s British Open was Shibuno’s debut competitive event played outside her home country. She has two victories on the JLPGA tour.

9. Shibuno faces a tough choice

Shibuno is eligible for LPGA Tour Membership with the victory. She can accept immediate Membership, which would mean 2019 is her rookie season, or take Membership starting in 2020.

8. Shibuno nearly doubled her career earnings Sunday

Since turning pro, Shibuno had earned about $733,725. That included winnings from her victories in the World Ladies Championship Salon Pass Cup and Shiseido Anessa Lady’s Open earlier in 2019. She won $675,000 on Sunday.

7. Shibuno ended a 42-year Japanese drought in majors

The only other Japanese golfer – male or female – to win a major golf tournament was Chako Higuchi. Her major victory came in the 1977 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

6. Shibuno joins a very exclusive club

Shibuno is just the second player to win in her major debut in this decade. She joins Hyo Koo Kim, who won the 2014 Evian Championship.

5. Shibuno plays fast

In what may be the most-welcomed part of her championship, Shibuno does not waste time pondering shots or looming above her ball. She began quickly on Thursday and never let up her pace until she had the Women’s Open won.

4. Shibuno likes sweets

After her victory Sunday, Shibuno spoke through an interpreter and said she was both hungry and planned to celebrate her victory by “eating sweets.”

3. Shibuno dreamed of being ‘Ariel’ as a child

Like a millions of others who came of age in the past three decades, Shibuno once dreamed of becoming “Ariel” – as in Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” Her other option: become a Kamen Rider.

2. Shibuno’s parents were both athletes

Both her parents were track-and-field athletes. Her father, Satoru, was a discus thrower and her mother, Nobuko, threw the javelin.

1. Shibuno is an avid softball player

Earlier this year, Shibuno told the Golf Digest Online of Japan that she enjoys playing softball more than golf. She is a pitcher but learned to bat left-handed to avoid damaging her golf swing.

Charley Hull has been adding more than 2,000 new followers a day on Instagram.  At this rate, she'll join Nelly in the million-follower club soon.

It's a toss-up between Charley and Nelly on who'll rule Instagram eventually from LPGA.

Paige has more than either of them.

Plus Onlyfans.

Just saying🙃

Kim Khardashian has 362 million followers, but she can't help grow the LPGA; nor is Paige.

It'll make a difference if either Nelly or Charley, or both, grow their followers to 2.0 - 3.0 million range.

It will make a difference I acknowledge.

2 to 3m is a good, realistic aim - that is what we have with Caitlin Clark plus also Sam Kerr and Aitana Bonmati (2 of the best women's world soccer players).

Here's a goal (pun) - Alex Morgan at 10m.

Curious if they'll set up the course for a birdiefest today. When they played here last in 2016 the top 5 shot 65, 67, 66, 66, and 67.

At last year's KPMG, the top 5 shot 67, 66, 64, 65, and 67.

Could be a wild finish.

I hope they do and I normally have the opposite preference.

If so, got a feeling like you re the wild finish.

This course could be incredible fun with players going for it, with both good and bad outcomes.

close enough but no cigar.  at least hinako's first foray outside japan was to thailand - another southeast asian country.  but no, she's not a drop filipina.   either way, rooting for these gals later (hopefully not jinxing miyu, hinako).

Had an emergency as the golf course was calling so I didn't get to see everything yesterday. Was hoping Hull would take advantage of her near eagles in the middle part of the round so sad to see she slipped back a little. With Inglis & Hartlage taking advantage like they did she missed out on an opportunity to put a little fear in anyone at the top. Maybe she can go HAM like she did at Pebble and slide up enough to take it. Doubtful that many ahead of her will stall out enough to make it happen, but a man can dream.

Yang will be tough to beat. Anyone around 90% scrambling on a course like that is going to be dangerous. Everyone else has their work cut out for them against her.

Vu is maybe the most dangerous of the lurkers. Scary good coming of injury right into a win and looking like she never missed a beat overall this week as well.

Always liked Thompson's power through the ball so good to see her in contention. Her finish with those irons looks a little scary at times but if it works it works so we'll see.

Whoever wins will deserve it. Course is a test and then some.

Early scoring looks tough, so the birdiefest appears to have been canceled.

Leona bogeys one of her first 3 holes in 50% of her rounds this season, often it is the first hole.

Rarely birdies in those first 3 holes.

Has happened again in R3, also bogeyed H1 in R2 (did birdie her H1 in R1 here though).

Got to be something mental contributing.

Guess what - bogeys hole 3 in R4, no birdies at that stage - its an issue for her that isn't just technical.

Also, in last 7 rounds + this R4 up to hole 3, she has 3 sand saves out of 15. Think on this realising she is one of the better putters.

At least these are obvious issues so can be identified and fixed with her smarts and that of her team.

Why is Lexi getting any coverage?

She's 5 over in 5 holes, T18 and 9 strokes behind the leader, she's out of it.

A farce, just focus on the leaders, its a good battle at the top incl an American, we don't need to see Lexi chop it around.

Not if their followers are following them for reasons other than golf, which I suspect is the case, especially with Charley. Not to mention all the bots that follow them( 5-15 percent).
