You tell them that you know karate. No, tell them you are a policeman. Better yet, tell them that you know the owner. No! No! I know! tell them you won't invite them to your birthday party, that always gets their attention, then they will be sorry and let you through, it works everytime. :D

If they see that they are holding up the group that I am playing in and there is a opening in front of them and they haven't offered to let us play thru I normally politely ask to play thru. I've found you can get alot further by being polite then by rudely asking or demanding to play thru.

Sometimes they are rude and decline then I normally make a mental note and schedule a time in front of them sometime in the near future and purposely play slow to hold them up a few holes, not long enough to slow the whole course up, but long enough for them to get the hint.

after the round I normally talk to the pro and let him handle it.

Be courteous and wait for my turn.

I love to watch guys I'm paired with lose their temper, get out of sorts, and start hitting crappy shots.......all the fault of the group in front of us, of course. :D

Be polite, nice, kind, etc ... Yeah Right and then they say NO !!!

That's happened a couple of times and once we made the turn, I addressed it with the Marshall.

Otherwise, start making the current round a practice type round and hit a couple of shots per hole

if no one is behind you. If there is, explain to the group that the Knuckle Heads in front of us

won't let you play through.

Try to Stay Focus and Practice on Patience and Rhythm .... My 2 Cents ... Thx

I usually don't have to say anything. If a group is slower than my group, they usually offer to let us play through. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that the shortest woman in our group is 5'10" and we can all bomb the ball over 200 yrds. :D Seriously, I would just ask politely to play through.

I'm often a single, so when I the group in front of me clogging things up, I politely ask to play through. Usually they don't have a problem, unless you get some jerk who insists that I'm going to slow him down because I'm walking. In that case, I skip the hole and tee off on the next one...and purposely sloooow doooown for the next two holes.

i don't mind it so much if i am not riding on them. i'll usually hang back, really think about the shot. if i hit a bad shot, just hit another (not counting it though) or if between clubs try both clubs. i use it as an oppurtunity to work on my game. also practice my short game and putting with it.

I will often just chip and pitch around on the tee a while and just wait for them to finish. If I'm just playing a round with my buddies and the course is quiet we will usually try to skip onto another hole but if not just got to wait. There is no point getting frustrated about it.

Be polite, drop hints, then ask. The subtle approach usually works, but if the group in front are jerks, then nothing would work anyway.

Be sure to assess the situaiton, if they are an entire hole behind for 2-3 holes, then you have a point. But if they quickly catch up and their are a lot of groups ahead of them, then relax. People expecting to play through on weekends are always a crack up.

Also, be sure of your etiquette. If you are a single, you have basically no priority on the golf course. If a foursome is playing ahead of you with a scheduled tee time and they are keeping up with the group in front of them, then too bad, singles wait. And even if they are not keeping up, unless they are playing really slow for a foursome, you still should wait until asked.

It depends if the course is stacked up, I just have a few more beers and say to myself and my playing partners at least we're not at work :cheesy: :D

If the course is not stacked up and the group is just slow I'll try and stick tight one or two holes and if they don't get the hint and offer to let us through I ask politely or just skip ahead and try and work that hole in later if possible. At my home course which I walk 99% of the time if I skip a hole I just stop by the club house after the round and let them know I skipped X hole because of slow play they just tell me to grab a cart and bring it back after I've finished. On one occasion a buddy of mine and I did this and we were walking off the range after hitting a bucket and finishing our second or third beer when the group we passed had just gotten to the 18th green. Granted I've only done this a few times and they have all been afternoon rounds, but it's an option you may want to consider if given the chance. :)

If I have a slow group in front of me and there isn't an option of playing through them I usually just mess around on the tee box. Work on bouncing a golf ball on my wedge. I must have done a lot of waiting last year because I can now go between my legs (both ways), switch hands, spin a 360, bounce off the knee, and bounce off the handle. I get bored really quick so I always have to be doing something. If the waiting gets to bad I will just go back to the practice range and working on my game until the course slows down. One of the benefits of having own cart and a membership at the course i guess.

If I'm playing with other people we usually come up with some game on the tee box. Play hacky with our wedges or try playing "PIG" with the tee marking being the hoop.

I think it depends on how busy the course is as well. Also depends on when I'm playing. If I'm playing on a day where I don't care as much how long it takes and the course is busy, I just kick back and try to stay loose. If it's just one group slowing me down, I'll ask to play through.

If it's Golf League night, that throws a few more variables into the equation. Since we're playing against each other, and the sun, a slow group can cause a problem. If it's our golf league members, we just try to stay patient.

If it's the league in front of us that always puts their worst players in the last tee time, we keep on them because their next closest group is usually 2 holes ahead. Depending on what they are doing, someone in our league may fire a drive near them or shout at them so they get the message. I've seen these guys stop at every water hazard looking for golf balls that aren't even theirs. Then they proceed to duff their next shot into that same hazard. It can be very aggrevating.

Bottom line, if you are the group holding up play, let others play through (without driving into them) or try to play "Ready" golf.

My 2 cents :D

  • 7 years later...

If our group catches them and it's clear that there's no one in front, then we'll ask nicely if we may play through. It's extremely rare for someone to say "no you may not." When that does happen, I'll wait for a hole in hopes of seeing a marshal, or I'll call the pro shop. If the pro shop does not respond (again, very rare), then I find another place to play.

My experience with slow play is that it's more often than not caused by a group many holes in front of us, by an overly-full golf course, or some combination of both. Not that it never happens, but it's usually not the group immediately in front of us, so I try not to let it bother me too much unless the pace of play is egregiously slow.
