Sky Caddie SG5 - bird's eye view

Recommended Posts

Did anyone else see this?
So I'm watching the Golf Channel's wrapup show covering the PGA Mercandise show on Saturday night and Adam Barr is interviewing Hank Haney, and Adam says to Haney, "Now we move on to something I know is dear to your heart, Sky Caddie. I think Hank has done some endorsing for Sky Caddie.

They're reviewing the SG5 model and its features and they show a bird's eye view of the hole. Its not an actual fly over like the U Pro, but a layout of the hole showing the shape of the hole and all the hazards you will face. It looked very good. This feature is also mentioned in an article on golfchannel.com about the Sky Caddie.

Maybe they are adding software updates in an effort to stay competitive with some of the new competition out there.

I hope its true.

I saw this too!!!!! I sure hope that they make the feature available for upgrade because it would make the SG5 perfect. Please let me know if you hear of any news on the matter???

It will be available March 1st for all units. It's pretty cool. The green contours will separate them from anyone using satellites images. You can only do it on the ground, just like everything else they do. FYI There new web site goes live Wed. morning. I was told it will make direct connecting and getting new updates a breeze.

Awesome news, thanks for the update. I've always felt SG's "walking the course" measuring procedure produces more accurate results than the other companies measuring of sat photo's and this takes it even further.

I see that the SkyCaddie website is back on line and has been redesigned. I was not able to find any mention of the features described in this thread. The do make mention that the scorekeeping feature is at "Accessories" but I didn't see that either.

Am I missing something, or are these upgrades just not quite there yet?

If you look at the website they have an upgrade for the SG5 that changes the way it looks. Also it tells you the depth of the greens and it tracks the distance you hit the ball as you move from one spot to the next supposedly automatically. It costs $19.95 though. Has anyone used it yet?

I talked with a SkyCaddie rep and was told if you purchased the updated for 19.95 that gives you the 20 course upgrade, you will get the 'birds eye view' upgrade at no additional charge.

So to me it makes sense to pay for the upgrade now and get the 20 course storage now.

I purchased the $19.95 upgrade last December. Does this mean that when the new feature come out that I will just receive an alert that it is now available for download?

Has anyone done a comparison on course with the two styles in order to determine if your "feeling" is correct?

If the on course mapping used by Sky Caddie is more accurate then I would prefer to go that way to upgrade my SG2, but I have not seen

anywhere a comparison on accuracy of the two styles.

I have owned a SG2 for 5-6 years and my subscription is still good through June of this year. I have owned a Golf Guru since last March. I have had both on the course and found no particular difference in yardages between the two. That said, however, two years ago we completed a three year greens renovation project, redoing the type of grass but also changing the shape and sizes, some appreciably. During that period and for about a year afterward, the SG2 was inaccurate when it came to distances to some, then most, then all of the green until they finally sent someone out to re-walk the course. That was one of the reasons I bought the Golf Guru, to be able to do detailed, personally meaningful self-mapping including the outline of the greens for use with their equivalent Smart Green feature.

Yes and also green contours. It was an SG5 in his hand so hopefully it will be an update to our existing unit and not a new model, ie SG5.5.

I saw these guys at the PGA Show, they said we will be able to update the software, but there will be a price tag attached to it.

Kind of sucks, I'd kind of expect them to offer that free-o-charge to those of us who already purchased it.

I agree. I have owned an SG5 now for a year +, but I have not renewed my membership yet. Have watched in earnest as the competition has come out of the woodwork. Just waiting now to see who really breaks away, if anyone. My problem with skyCaddie is that every time they seem to progress, they do so with their hand out. Not saying everything they offer should be free, but in my humble opinion they are not so far out ahead of everybody else to warrant the arrogance associated with asking for payment on minor upgrades.

Here is some info I got from SkyCaddie:

Hole View: The SkyCaddie can also provide a bird's eye view of each hole on the tee or anytime during the play of the hole to see the challenges you face. Customize your preferences to present this feature automatically or a one button push gets this view on demand.

Digital Scorecard: Golfers can keep track of their rounds with the SkyCaddie Digital Scorecard. Handicap holes automatically highlight on the digital scorecard with the option of keeping score on a gross or net method. Higher handicappers have the option of using a new MyPar option and the SkyCaddie's Digital Scorecard adjusts to the par of each hole to a personal par to help golfers achieve personal goals such as breaking 80, 90 or even 100 for the first time.

I was told this update would be out in a few months.

Received the following from skycaddie this morning:

Thank you for contacting us. The digital scorecard will be part of the $19.95 Course and Feature Expansion Package. If you already made this purchase, the scorecard will not cost you any additional money. We are expecting the scorecard to be released as early as tomorrow. It should be available no later than next week. If you Sync your device tomorrow, you may be able to download the scorecard at that time.

We'll see how true that is.

Just sync'd my sky caddie this morning and the update is there for the score card. Not sure if the bird's eye view is there as I haven't been on the course yet. The scorecard feature is nice and from what the rep told me bird's eye view is free if you paid the $19.95 for the initial upgrade
