Casio !
Hi Chas,
I am looking for a video camera that is able to record a golf swing with a person that is aprox only 6ft or so from the camera lens. All cameras I have come across I can only capture about half of the persons body. I am not sure if this deals with lens or what but I am working out of a small studio for the winter and would like to mount a camera on the back wall. Like I said the only issue is that the building is only about 15ft deep. so with the person hitting out of the building the club comes within about 6-10ft from the back wall. Please help. I feel like there has to be a solution. Thanks in advance!
Which of the these Casios ...
The Casio models with full manual exposure control in high speed video mode have been the:
FH1
FH25
FH100
FH20
has the widest angle lens ?
What camera statistic deals with "wide angle lens ability" ?
The Casio FH100 has a 24-240mm zoom lens. The 24 mm zoom setting indicates the widest field of view.

Look at the table near the end for horizontal and vertical angular fields of view vs focal length.
http://en.wikipedia....i/Angle_of_view

Search lens focal length vs field of view OR angular coverage OR angle coverage OR height width

The shortest focal length of the other cameras are on the Casio site specs or on dpreview camera reviews, etc.

Snapsort also has camera reviews and specs as well as a listing of high speed video cameras.
http://snapsort.com/...speed-framerate

(Too complicated to explain here but the focal lengths given really represent 35 mm film 'equivalent' specifications.)

So the larger the shortest focal length, the further away the camera has to be to get the whole swing in the picture !

The best way to handle FOV problems is to convert degrees of the horizontal and vertical fields of view into RADIANS. Once you have these angles in radians then simply multiply by the lens-to-object distance to get the linear width and height covered by the field of view.

1) Convert the vertical FOV in degrees to radians. Divide angle in degrees by 57.3 deg/radian.
http://www.beg.utexa...ols/deg_rad.htm
Convert the horizontal FOV in degrees to radians.

2) Multiply the vertical angle in radians X the lens-object distance = linear vertical field of view. (in feet or meters)
Multilpy the horizontal angle in radians X the lens-object distance = linear horizontal field of view.

Unnecessary detail & discussion (If possible, forget '35 mm equivalent' and just find the camera's FOV in vertical and horizontal degrees.)

Ok gurus, I just bought a mint fh20 for a relative bargain being what they are selling for these days. So now comes the question.......what are the best settings to record a swing in? Any help would be appreciated. You could post answer here, or just send me a pm. Thanks again guys.

I have nothing to do with this item (or the seller), but you can watch this auction to get a feel for open market pricing (ends in 6 days).

Sony Action Cam HDR-AS15 120fps

120 fps
no manual shutter (it says no manual exposure control).
It is a video camera, not a camera.
Image quality

The Action Cam delivers good exposures on automatic, which is reassuring as there is no manual exposure control available. The video image is reasonably sharp, while colours are accurate. It also copes well with fast movement, and there is little evidence of rolling shutter.
.....FH20. ......what are the best settings to record a swing in?

I don't have the FH20 which is an earlier model compared to the FH100.

Download the full FH20 user's manual from Casio support.

First read replies 7-11 on the FH100 in this thread.
http://www.kinovea.o...opic.php?id=435

Look at the first paragraph of reply #9 on the MEMORY function and find the equivalent function for the FH20 otherwise you have to reset settings each time the camera is powered off.

Use the fastest shutter to minimize motion blur but compromise to a slower shutter, 1/10,000 sec or 1/5,000 sec, etc. for clouds or late in the day.

Read the reply on indoor lighting vs outdoor lighting and realize that you never have enough light indoors for fast shutters.

FH20?
MANUAL MODE
Frame rate: 200-300 rps
Shutter Speed: 1/10,000 sec (or faster in direct sunlight)
ISO: as required for acceptable video brightness, see also FH100 issue regarding using ISO AUTO this thread and on the Kinovea website.
If the FH20 takes AA batteries research this thread and forum for recommendations by users on rechargeable batteries. Carry two sets of batteries.

A longer focal length zoom setting will give you a 'more flat' - more dimensionally accurate video than a wide angle zoom setting.

Just a sample WRT fps and shutter speed. Over the past several years my only video capability was a Canon ZR800 (camcorder - miniDV). This is a (low end) digital camera but the media is a tape. It is VERY limited WRT on the range viewing (can't step frame by frame) and is only 30 fps (or 60 with the right processing). However, it does have a manual shutter speed control. However the max speed is 1/2000th second shutter speed and I pretty much use this setting all the time.

There is slight blurring, however it does yield viewable images in most conditions. I have attached two images using 1/2000th second shutter speed with one taken in very good light and one on a very cloudy/misty day (basically as bad as it gets and it was also late in the day). If I ever want to do any detail work (with this camera) on a cloudy day I will wear light colored clothes and use a steel shafted club or some white adhesive tape.

And don't be fooled by a GREAT pic/video from some camera. If this camera has 'sports mode' and the lighting was super, you will see super sharp images. Things will be different on a cloudy day.

dave

ps. This was a 7w, FWIW.

Images look reasonable. But it'll be hard to catch impact !
Thanks for the images - very educational.
I think the fun part of recording yourself is viewing it right away ... and the Casios are the best at that.

Just for completeness here are consecutive frames at 60 fps and a 7w. Note that my driver SS is somewhere in the mid 90's at best. Just blind luck in finding impact in the 2nd frame.

Of course I was really just wanting to show off my crappy release.

Just received my fh100. I'm trying to digest the large amount of information on here.

The other thread Dave posted on the memory card has already been a big help.

My question is, when imported into the V1 app for ipad or my phone, will frame by frame viewing be possible?

Or is some other program used for that kind of viewing, pulling out individual frame shots?

Or both?

I don't see why not. The iphone films at 30fps ... but I bet the software will allow any speed of capturing.
You can view frame by frame on the camera as well.
Film one swing.
The learn to trim off the beginning and end with in camera editing. Now it's just swing. Learn to speed up and slow down the swing and go frame by frame etc.

I would expect that any application that will view 'non high speed stuff' frame-by-frame will also be able to view high speed content (120 fps and higher) frame-by-frame. However, in general they probably will not be able to view this at real time speed. I use cSwing in Windows 7 and it handles frame by frame just fine, but won't show things at real time speed.

ps. Still haven't noticed a dropped frame since changing to a class 10 SDHC card.

One last comment (that is probably no news to you). You can single step (frame by frame) through your videos on the FH100. Truth be told if it had 'on the range' frame by frame capability, I would still be using my old mini-DV camcorder.

Wish it wasn't winter. Will probably shoot some video of my dog retrieving just to give it a workout.

I like the feel of it. I've always used a DSLR, so it will be nice to have something compact for occasional "regular" photography.

Appreciate the feedback, thanks. My wife found me a 32gb SanDisk ultra at Walmart for $30, so was able to cash in on your tip.

Casio FC150 - Does the FC150 have a mode where it can manually set shutter speed to 1/40,000 sec?

I'm not sure why someone would want 1/40,000th shutter speed as a 100 mph clubhead moves around .044 inches in that amount of time and it takes a ton of light or a really sensitive CCD/whatever to record it.

The tennis video is not a particularly good measure as most of the motion is away from the camera rather than across it. Further when you see a very crisp image from Camera X, you need to be careful in judging that. image. The most commonly used settings on most cameras adjust the shutter speed based on available light. Just because you saw a really crisp image in 'Camera XYZ' on a very bright day does NOT mean that you will see a crisp image indoors or on a cloudy day. And of course even cameras with manual shutter control will show dimmer images (though not blurry) in darker conditions (at higher shutter speeds).

I'm not sure why either but the point is that the camera would also likley set very fast shutter speeds to minimize motion blur such as 1/20,000, 1/10,000, 1/5000 sec..

Light required at 1/40,000 sec. With the Casio FH100 here is a 1/40,000 sec exposure in direct sunlight and in shadow (the light from just the sky). I don't see a light level problem with any golf played on a sunny day even at 1/40,000 sec. The 'tons of light' required for high speed video is an internet myth.
https://vimeo.com/26480215

The tennis video is not a particularly good measure as most of the motion is away from the camera rather than across it.
You are mistaken about the direction as most of the racket head speed and ball travel is across the frame in that video. The video is not an accurate measurement of motion blur but it is consistent with a high shutter speed - to be confirmed by some FC150 owner or other interested parties.

1) If you see just one honest video showing motion blur you know what the camera is capable of under those conditions.

2) The tennis video was on a cloudy day as is apparent from the lack of shadow.

3) Indoors you are correct where the lighting is only about 1% of that in direct sunlight, exposure maybe 1/500 sec for useable pictures with a sensitive camera. ?

4) On an overcast/cloudy day I find that 1/10,000 sec works well with the FH100.

And of course even cameras with manual shutter control will show dimmer images (though not blurry) in darker conditions (at higher shutter speeds). Dimmer images for darker conditions. Agree.

We must be looking at different tennis serve videos. The one I viewed was indoors (majority of the motion away from the camera).

I would certainly not equate a cloudy day with just inside the 'shade line' on a sunny day. Attached is an example of a cloudy vs. sunny day at 1/2000th second. It might be better with a better camera - not sure.

This is the video in reply #44 that mentions,1/40,000 sec, etc . (Link added to earlier thread.) There is no shadow so it is a cloudy day.

For the example video that you show for a cloudy day, I agree that since there is no shadow it is a cloudy day. Its too dark. On most cloudy days I could overexpose the video and still have very fast shutter speeds such a 1/5000 sec with the FH100 by using the ISO and largest aperture.

What do you know about the photographic conditions? Shutter speed? ISO?, and f/number ? . These are just as important and could overexpose the video if the light level is adequate for high speed video.

At 1/2000 sec the front and back edges of a golf ball at 100 MPH or 1760"/sec should smear about 0.9" in the travel direction. That might make the ball look out of shape, elongated ........?.... slower chip shot.......

Regarding the questions, I don't know for the most part the answers. As I stated the shutter speed in both cases was 1/2000. But the camera that I was using gives no control over sensitivity (ISO), and no explicit control over aperture or focal ratio (except for an optical zoom). I was 'zoomed out' as much as possible which will give the brightest image possible.. But beyond that it is 'as good as that camera will do' (for the given conditions and shutter speed), but that is all that I can quanitfy..

BTW - DaveLeeNC, Did you just get a FH100? There is one unusual thing about the FH100. If you leave the ISO setting on AUTO and use high shutter speeds the camera will produce very dark videos. I've never confirmed why it does that but it is easy to just set the ISO manually to a high value such as 1600 and get bright videos. This issue was discussed in an earlier reply.

I will admit to not yet having explored the full capabilities of my 'new' FH100. All I really needed was a decent 'on the range' review capability (mostly frame step and video navigation) and the ability to get away from my old firewire connection on my mini-DV camera (CCD/DV technology but tape media).

I just stuck the thing on ISO 800, 1/1000th speed, and 120 fps and for now that is quite functional for what I need (at the moment).

dave

ps. There is one thing that I really miss. HS doesn't include audio and I used to leave myself 'audio notes' to (for example) check this out (when I got back to my computer). Still way better than my old Sony ZR800 mini-DV.
