Things you love about certain golf courses that nobody really talks about

dlygrisse, you have it covered. I like smaller, subtle greens. I like chipping more than approach putts, and I like being able to chip. I like dryish, crisp lies in the fairway. I like the way golf courses look late in the day.

I like the wood signs at the start of each hole with the holes lay-out carved in.

I hate cart paths with gigantic pot holes.

Water bottles on the tee boxes, in a cooler.

I like courses that have a history, the older the better.

Sorry if this is OT... Sadly America has becomes a litigious society, and understandably that has influenced what courses offer to golfers. But not provide water to drink for people on a golf course is just plain WRONG. To think, people like me pays $120-$300 per week to play this dam game, and its too much trouble to wash out water containers, and better to to sell junk food and sugar drinks ... It's sickening...

Smooth greens and fairways which aren't water logged.

I'm also not a fan of forced layups. Takes any kind of risk/reward decision out of the equation.

A course that will make me try. I don't say that to be cocky, but too many courses are too easy. Today for example. Played a wide open course. No practice swings. No pre shot routine. No thinking. Had a 72. There was no trouble. I just took the driver out and whacked it. I don't like courses like that. I like hard courses, with fairway bunkers, undulating greens, hazards, etc.

simple choice here given the sorry state of our old home course, grass on the fairways and greens is nice, so every drive doesnt land in a puff of sand

Unfortunately, if you had heard some of the stories I have, you would never drink out of an on course cooler again. Bring your own water and be happy you know where it came from and whats in it...

Kev... Our last two private clubs provided free bottled water to members and guests. Haven't seen that kind of attention since leaving. We always bring our own food and opt for energy drinks over water. But, thanks for the tip.

Makes me happy to think that the few times I've had to partake in on course coolers at my course, it's tasted enough like chlorine to know they've been washed more than daily...

I played a course the other day that provided simple yardage books for every player which included a description of the best way to play each hole and the course in general. I'd like to see more courses do this, it eliminated a lot of the guess work off from what for most people is an unfamiliar course (resort course in the mountains).

There is a club in the Philly area that has the nicest smelling stuff ever in the ball washers...I like that.
