Thumping the club into your back is the obvious culprit. For as long as that particular swing quirk goes on I suspect you'll continue to knacker clubs.

To be fair, you've got to be happy that the clubs have all been replaced under warranty. I like to think I'm an easy going bloke, but if I were manning a post in a manufacturer's warranty department and someone got on the blower about a warranty claim for a snapped driver - but admitted to me that they'd done a Sam Torrance with the the thing - they'd get a 'sorry to hear that' but no free replacement.

I appreciate your sentiments, but after nippping out onto the field of dreams this week and hitting a few full shots for the first time in five months due to a knackered shoulder and surgery in January, believe me when I say that you wouldn't give tuppence ha'penny for my current ballstriking.

As for snapping clubs, yes; I too felt like breaking a few shafts. Play your cards right and you may well end up getting my clubs at this rate.

Move to heavier shafts with stiffer tips.

I used to snap 65g shafts all day like they were twigs. The 90-100g shafts are a little beefier.

Wrapping any shaft around your back and neck is going to kill it over time. That screams "swing issue."

Are you this guy?

[attachment=577891:marvel_the_thing.jpg]

And the only constant seems to be TM irons and Callaway woods. Avoid either to reduce costs.

i havent had a laugh like that in a long time!!!

on a serious note, swing flaw, try practicing with your short irons, do some knockdowns or half swings
and try to finish your swing with the club in front of you ala punch. do this everyday in the range and get
the feel for the motion. that should help you a bit.

I am not a hacker by any means and I was not hitting the ball on the hosel with my FT-iq driver. I was also not shanking the ball with my irons. My swing speed is 108-110 off of my driver, with an aggresive tempo and a quick transition at the top. Is there any reason why my clubs- even steel shafted ones- do things like snap around my back or shatter at impact?!?!?

I am 16 years old, 5'8'' and 120 lbs, so I am actually the exact opposite of The Thing... XD

And you swing at 108-110. You definitely need to post your swing on youtube or something. This I have to see.

Stage 1350 is spot on with regard to heavier shafts with stiffer tips. The longer the shaft / the faster the swing speed / the heavier the head - the greater the stress on the tip.

I went through a stage of breaking 7 or 8 over-length one iron shafts - clean breaks just above the hosel. (Not too much glue used, no step-fracture breaks due to poor club building). Even tip cropping by 3" did not work. Long shafts capable of handling a 200g driver head just could not handle a 230g one iron head.

The answer, as Stage 1350 rightly advises, is essentially heavier shafts with far stiffer tip sections, even then I recommended tip cropping them!

There are few golfers in the world capable of lashing any club across their back with sufficient force to cause damage. I constantly try to do it, but have been unsuccessful to date. I may cheat and buy a Stultz shaft!

Not only does it scream swing issue, but also back injury. Make sure you keep that back LIMBER! I used to swing like that and halfway through my senior year, I had to take a couple months off. I had to go through some pretty intensive "training" to learn how to properly stretch and still have issues from time to time. But, I will say that swinging so hard when I was younger really helped develop the muscles I need to hit the ball a long way now without over exerting myself.

Oh yeah, I never broke a shaft though. Not over my back at least. It was always my knee... :bb:

I am just the opposite of the op, I'm 58 y/o 6' 1" 210 lbs, I have a Cobra ZL that Acushnet legal department has now because when the shaft broke against my back it cut my back about 3" just to the left of my right shoulder blade, go out the next night after this and brake another driver shaft (different club company and shaft), I have snapped a couple of S300 shafts in hybrids. It is the shaft hitting your back that is causing the breakage. I am in the middle of a swing change to prevent this and have the USGA senior am qualifier coming Tuesday so I'm pretty much screwed!
Work with a good instructor and get it fixed, don't do as I have done and "just live with it" because you can and will get better after the swing change.

I used to have a similar problem, but it was kind of reversed. At first I was getting pretty frequent concussions when the clubhead would rebound off my temple in my follow through, so I had to make an immediate swing change. After some hard work with my local pro, we thought we had it fixed! It took a lot of work to get used to the changes, after all, it's not easy hitting the ball with a football helmet on. The only problem was I started breaking a lot of clubs after the change, we think it's because the club is now bouncing off the helmet at close to 100 mph, but we aren't sure.

after you swing does the ground look like this?

i broke an EI-70, pheonix and a matrix in the last few years. just wear and tear i suppose. sounds like your need SERIOUS swing adjustments. take the money your spending on repairing clubs and get some lessons

I used to work at this club in SC, and there was a female member, about late 60's early 70's, and every time she would swing, she would hit herself in the back of the head with her follow through! She had played this way for years and it was the funniest thing I have ever seen. And she would hit it hard enough that her head would snap forward and she would make this crazy face. I think someone took a video of it, I will see if I can find it.
