Is that because of the Copper underlay? Where and for how much could I find a decent set?
[/quote]

I found sets for 300.00 in great condition. Save the search on Ebay and have the reminder kick you an email for a few months. Joe Kwok have a collector mint set he would sell. I have a set. One of the first "modern" blades. Longer heel to toe, great offset and soft like nothing you will hit. Japan sets all have the s200 and serials on the ferrules. Money. Mine have slight wear on a few heads and you can see the copper under the chrome.

I really like my PureFit 1020MB set. I have 3-GW, but also have a 3-6 in the 1020CB for a mixed set option. I like to take the 3 iron to the range and practice with it, when I'm hitting the blade 3i well, moving to the course and using an SGI set or a GI set feels ridiculously easy. I really find the 7-wedges decent, but the blade long irons are hard for me to hit.

Hogan Apex Forged Blades not on the list...that is a crime in some states!

Other then the Hogans, I would have to tip my hat to Mizuno (MP-68s are fantastic, so are the MP-33s). Bridgestone J33B and Callaway PM Proto blades are at the top as well.

You forgot the Epon AF-Tour Blades........I've hit them and they are a thing of beauty.

PS: Have the MP-68s and think they are the greatest irons I've ever owned.

When I think of Callaway irons, I still think of those wide-soled, cavity back sod excavators that they used to only make. Totally forgot about the X Protos. Does the extra mass near the top line keep the ball flight down better?

I just realized I still have the set of Haig Ultra Contour Sole Reg 390's (3 - PW, no 7 iron) from when I just started. Are they worth a decent amount of money?

(The funny thing is that I'm only 17, and I was using them at age 11. I just remember being afraid of hitting 3-5 irons)

Hogan Redlines are the finest irons I've ever played.

Unfortunately my skills don't measure up any more. I just don't have time to play enough to have those beauties in my bag right now.

Adaptive Golf.....look out for the one-armed man:

I'm currently Gaming the Titleist 710 mb's with tour issue dynamic gold which are in my opinion the best I've played hands down, super solid n soft, great feel and feedback don't spin too much in the shorter irons. 10 out of 10
I have also had:
Cleveland CG1 Black Pearls with Black gold shaft, loved the no glare finish and the milled face= spin Spin and More SPIN.
Titleist 690's S300, Classic look and feel.
Titleist ZM's 6.0 Rifles, z muscle looked a bit....... but they didn't last long.
Titleist 660's S400, Super iron wish i hadn't got shut of em :(
Tmag TP MB with 6.0 flighted Rifles. Good flight firm feel
I've always wanted a set of Mizuno but every time i find something else which I Prefer, Never mind maybe next time ?????

I'm currently using a set of Nike VR Blades with KB (not KBS) Tour X shafts. However, I had to reshaft the 6 iron with the KBS Tour shaft. It feels to me like the swingweight is heavier. Does anybody know if the KBS shaft weighs more than the KB shaft?

Lots of fantastic ones over the years (Mizuno alone account for ten or twelve great sets) but Titleist's 681 takes the top honours in my book.

+1

I have played the 681s since 2001. Currently on my second set. I played Hogan Apexes prior to that and the 681 has them all beat hands down including the Redlines and the Apex IIs. I have tried several versions of Mizunos as well. Nice sticks, but still a distant second to the 681s IMO.

Old stuff:
1962 Tommy Armour AT2W Driver 1953 Macgregor M65W EOM 3 wood 1978 H&B PowerBilt Citation 4 wood
1984 Ben Hogan Apex PC 2-E 1968 Wilson Dual Wedge
1964 Acushnet O-SET M6S Bullseye Putter

New stuff
Cobra ZL 10.5 driver (Matrix HD6 s-flex) Titleist TSR2 18* fairway wood (Matrix Code-8 s-flex) Adams A2P 20* hybrid (Rombax 8D07HB s-flex)
Titleist 716 MB irons 4-PW (Apex 4 soft-stepped) Callaway Mack Daddy wedges 52, 56, 60 (DG S200)
Odyssey ProType 9 putter

Noone can dispute that Titleist hasnt released ANYthing that beats 681s. I still have a set 1-PW and may pickup another.

The Bridgestone J33Bs should be considered a modern classic. Im STILL looking for a blade with a equally long hosel and as beefy a muscleback. Dont even have to mention the sweeeet ENDO forged 1020 carbon steel.....
