i don't know never played blades, but i fell in love with the mizuno mp 33 when i first laid eyes on it 6 years ago. I had been playing golf for about a month, and took my first trip to the golf store. I walked in, looked around, and I found the mp 33s. I thought to myself these are what i need to be playing. To say the least its been 6 years, and i am still a 14 or 15 handicap. Saw a set of clean mp 33 at golf galaxy last weekend for 157, and almost bought them. I might sell my idea pros and just say to hell with it and start playing them. There is only one way to learn to play blades, and that is hitting them. Good move?

I'm kind of partial to my Nickent ARC Blades. Too bad the company couldn't make a go of it - JBH designed a nice forgiving blade in this set that very few people will ever get a chance to hit.

Can't argue with the Hogan Apex Redlines either. Funny to look down at a 2i in the set; by today's standards, the head looks the size of a quarter.

This here is one sexy iron also - the Wilson Staff FG59 tour blades:

Any of the Taylormade MB's are amazing (Rac, TP and the new TP MB)

As far as a bit of a throwback the nod has to go the Titty 681's, Titty "T" stamps, Nike with the simple swoosh and the Mizuno MP-14's. All are gorgeous.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'd like to add the following blades to the list:

  • John Letters Master Model

  • Maruman 31-EX Conductor

The JLs were my starter set from 1982 to 1995, then switched to the Maruman's from 1996 to 2011, and have now played 6 rounds with a set of MP-33s.

All of my sets have been second hand. I loved the Maruman clubs, but the MP33s are something else. The very first shot was a 5-iron on our opening par three (Goodwood Downs in UK) 181 off the whites and stiffed to 5 feet. Shame I missed the putt

Here's a google pic of the Conductors: they look great in the bag, and got a lot of nice comments from playing partners (as now do the MP33s) . Someone told me that these Marumans were the model that Woosnam won the Masters with ?

I currently use the 67's, but, I was always fond of these heads...

MP-14s are nice, but the better irons are the ones they are copied from: Hogan Precision/Personal irons from '53 and '82.

Old stuff:
1962 Tommy Armour AT2W Driver   1953 Macgregor M65W EOM 3 wood   1978 H&B PowerBilt Citation 4 wood
1984 Ben Hogan Apex PC 2-E   1968 Wilson Dual Wedge
1964 Acushnet O-SET M6S Bullseye Putter

New stuff
Cobra ZL 10.5 driver (Matrix HD6 s-flex)  Titleist TSR2 18* fairway wood (Matrix Code-8 s-flex)   Adams A2P 20* hybrid (Rombax 8D07HB s-flex)
Titleist 716 MB irons 4-PW (Apex 4 soft-stepped)    Callaway Mack Daddy wedges 52, 56, 60 (DG S200)

Not doubting anyones ability here since I'm no pro either, but I can't beleive so many guys are swearing by the Miura BB blades as the be all/end all. I'd love to watch you guys flush them, because I found them rather intimidating.

I've played:

Hogan Apex grinds
Nike Blades
Titleist ZM
Miura BB blades
Nike VR
Scratch TD sb-1
Mp-29

The best for me go to the bottom 3 in my list.

I loved the Titleist Tour model blades I had in the mid 80's

Loved the Taylor Made tp's I played in the early 90's

I loved the MP-37's when I played them, sweet feel.

I had a set of Miura tournament blades with tour concept shafts 3 yrs back (talk about buttah) but let them go as PING s58's were more consistent ... at the time and I was hall of fame stupid

I have X-protos (v. good) in the basement but they sit beside my s-57's (money) consoling each other because ... the s56's are so good it is disturbing. I like flagging it !!!

I played MP-57 irons through college and really felt like I was losing my game by the time I graduated. I was a lot better in high school. So, I pulled my old blades out that I used back then and took them out on the course. I hit them great, so I decided I needed to go back to blades (I know, it seems backwards).

Well, this is the thread that I found when I was looking for some suggestions of blade irons to try. A year later, I've hit and owned a few sets and still have 3 sets that I don't ever plan to get rid of. Those are Mizuno MP-14, Ben Hogan Apex '99, and MacGregor Muirfield.

All in all, these are the three best sets I've tried. To compare them:

Feel -- Most here are familiar with the Mizuno feel, so you all know that they are soft and smooth.
The Macs have a very different feel, but I still like it. They give more of a positive feel when hit pure, yet it still feels soft.
I was surprised to find that the Hogan irons were the softest (and best feeling, in my opinion) irons of the bunch.

Aesthetics -- The MP-14s are a small, simple looking iron that really looks just like a muscleback should. Everything from the sole to the high, pointed toe is just perfect on them.
I've said for a long time that the Muirfield irons were the best looking irons ever made, and I still feel that way today. I don't know exactly what it is that makes them look so great to me. I guess It's just a combination of everything. They're just beautiful, classy looking irons. Size wise, they're a bit smaller than the Mizunos, which makes them look a little intimidating.
I've also said that every blade that Hogan ever made (with the exception of the Radials) was beautiful, and the '99 Apex is no exception. I really like the blade on blade design and the simple graphics with the red and gold paintfill are beautiful.

Forgiveness -- I was surprised by how forgiving the MP-14s are. Especially given their relatively small blade size. My normal miss is out toward the toe and those shots still flew pretty straight with a minimal distance loss. Although, you get a pretty nice reminder when you don't hit the sweet spot.
The Muirfields are far and away the least forgiving of the bunch. If you don't hit the sweet spot, you get a very harsh vibration in the hands and and pretty significant distance and accuracy loss. My misses toward the toe would miss left (I'm a righty) and travel about half the distance of a pured shot.
The Hogans are the winner, for me, in this category. Missing the sweet spot usually gives a minimal loss of accuracy, but little to no distance loss. You still know when you miss, as it doesn't feel AS soft, but it isn't near as jarring as the other two.

Workability -- Of course, being blades, these are all pretty workable, but there are slight differences. I got the most workability out of the MP-14s. I was able to get some pretty significant bends with them.
The Macs seemed to be the most accurate for me. I was able to work them and put them right in the perfect spot nearly every time I tried.
The Hogans were very good in this category as well. They blend the high workability of the MP-14s with the accuracy of the Macs. The only bad thing I've run into is the occasional push when I'm trying to draw them. I didn't really have that happen with the others.

Anyway, that's probably more than any of you want to read here, but there it is. Needless to say, the Hogans are in my bag right now, but I think all three of these sets belong on the "Best Blade Irons Ever" list.

like many have stated in this thread, x-protos are the best irons i've ever hit. as far as the looks of older models go, the cleveland ta1s can't be beat. the new adams mb2s look pretty sweet as well.

I was just given a set of tour issue ARC blades 7-pw with the 4, 5 & 6in 4dx pro's and am loving them so far. The ARC blades feel buttery soft and have a little forgivness to them. I have been really surprised how much I like them!

I've never seen the TN87's, but they look a lot like the old Honma Tour Models of that same era, the PP-717, 727 and 737. I have a set of the 717's from around 1987.

Am I seeing this correctly...the topline is actually thicker than the sole? I don't think I've ever seen an iron like that before.
