Paint fill 101

This thread inspired me. I am awaiting the arrival of shafts for my irons, so I figured I would re-do the paintfill on the heads to match the grips and ferrules i plan on using.

Wow that's gonna be nice.

I tried Citripstrip to remove paint on a Callaway MD2 slate wedge. It didn't touch the white paint. I am currently leaving Citristrip on, but it does not look like it will work.

Any tips or suggestions? Would my next step be to try something like VHT strip fast?

I had trouble getting the green swirl off the sole of an Odyssey MXM 2-Ball putter. Citristrip worked on the paint fill but wouldn't touch that thing. So I used Klean Strip Premium Stripper that I got from Lowes and it took it off in minutes. But be careful, that stuff is powerful.

For those who've painted both genuine and fake Scotty weights, do you get the same finish on both? I've just painted some of the aftermarket ones with Tamiya Clear Blue. That paint worked pretty well in the cherry bombs, but with the weights - they look fantastic after I've dropped the paint in & spread it around the recess, and whilst drying. But when I pick them up post drying to install back on the putter, the paint appears 'blotchy' and not as smooth and shiny as I'd expect. I suppose I should paint my genuine Scotty 20s with the same paint to compare, as I just used flat nail varnish on those.

I finally get the paint without air bubbles and q-tip fuzz, but now I get a blotchy, patchy finish instead! Pic to follow

Love this thread! I am always changing my paint fill, none of my circle of friends seem to really care about this so I've got a few pics to post, at least someone will take the time to have a look, this seems to be the place...

The VR wedge was stamped by a more experienced metal worker than I, it's decent but a little deeper on the one side, gave it a Canadian paint job

I got the Vapors and also tried a Canada theme, didn't love it, then after a rebuild and white ferrules and grips I suppose I always knew I'd go white, but I tried the blue in the Swoosh, didn't love that either. Finally, inevitably, painted them white. They look pretty cool with the black and white, simple colour scheme. I wanted something different, wasn't sure about white ferrules but they have grown on me. Full set shown.

The Method putter was my most recent, mixed some of my dark blue with some white for this powder blue shade, filled in pretty much every detail of the putter with it, new grip and boom, new love for one of my multiple putters.

I want to do my Engage wedges next, they began white as standard, I made em all black, which is nice but very plain. I have seen many three colour schemes mixing and matching each colour in different ways. I have 3 wedges so I'm not sure what to do. I will post pics as they come.

So, maybe I'm not searching right, but. What removes the black finish on a Scotty?

Not sure what model you have but I have a Studio Design 2.5 that after 12 years was looking a little shabby. I took good care of it but years of small nicks and dings in the black finish show up that much more. I used fine sandpaper, 1200 grit, with water and took off almost all the black finish. I left the black finish on the back, centre section, polished up the rest with steel wool and WD-40 (after sanding to desired shine) and this was the result.

Be gentle on the face, it's difficult to take away the milled look but I'd recommend just the steel wool on the face opposed to the sandpaper. Mine is fine because i basically just sanded until the silver showed, but I'm glad I stopped when I did. The milled face stayed intact and also matches the colour for the rest of the putter.

New to WRX. I officially have the putter bug. This thread is incredible and has given me many great ideas.

Quick question though... does anyone have any experience stripping the nickel plating off of a Scotty at home? I picked a really beat up Pro Platinum Sonoma 2 the other day and I want to remove the nickel, smooth out as many dings as possible (there are a ton), refinish it and finally paint fill. Anyone have any luck with nickel?

Thanks guys.

Tried to paint over the orange King lettering on the badge of my Forged Tec irons. Can't get it right but looks sooo much better IMO. The letters aren't stamped they are raised so can't simply paintfill them. Wish Cobra didn't want everyone's irons to look like they belong to Rickie Fowler. If anyone has any advice or has done something similar let me know.

I imagine it'll be fine. Don't get it on your ferrule.
