Paint fill 101

HuckleBogey_Finn

Recommended Posts

Hello All, I used my new Callaway XR hybrid with non stock shaft on vacation last week and some of the paint fill on the face chipped off. What is the st method to remove the paint fill from only the face of the club? I would like to leave the rest of the paint fill as it is now. Thanks for the info.

probably would be nice to see a picture to see what we are working with. Likely tape off the area, use a gel paint remover to get the rest of the paint in that area, wipe clean and go at it with the paint you will use to replace

I have a similar situation to njauq676 but I have the Cobra King Forged Tec irons:

I want to change the orange to something else but not sure if I'm dealing with metal or a decal. Is anyone familiar with this club?

Also, the KING letters are elevated (not recessed) which makes things more difficult. Maybe just a fine brush and a very delicate hand is needed to paint over the orange? Not sure, just hoping it's possible.

Does anyone know what to cover a painted sole to prevent chipping when your irons smash into the turf? I painted my Pings and everything is holding up great except for the soles, so I want to strip, repaint, and this time, cover the paint with some protective shield? Anyone?

Clear coat nail polish.

I put on a protective clear coat made for model airplanes and I still experienced chipping. I'm guessing that is more heavy duty than nail polish.

Try using appliance touch up paint. I called ping once and asked them to send me some white paint to correct some dots that had fallen out on my S55s.

They could not do that, but they suggested white appliance touch up paint (The dots were white).

Also how are you preparing surface for paint? If you posted this previously, I apologize.

Here are a few that I've done. To save some time and hassle, you can simply paint over the stock color scheme with nail polish. I've done this with Cleveland wedges and old taylormade 300 irons (I've only ever painted over black, white, gold, and red but have had no problems covering any of these). With my newest wedges I did strip the paint and I used Klean Strip Premium stripper. This stuff is amazing! When I finally took the fill out of my 300s I did the entire thing manually with sowing needles. I really wish I had just gone to the store instead of going through all of that trouble. The satin set (48,54,60) was done with my girlfriend's nail polish (right over top of the stock colors) and is over two years old. I have never retouched the back of the wedge and have only had to touch up the sole 2 times. I play a TON of golf and practice my short game quite frequently and the paint has held up amazingly well.

This is my new set. Same club but raw finish. This time I did strip the paint and again used nail polish to do the painting. Hopefully this stuff is as tough as the first type I used!

The s55 were done for a friend. The 300s are my gamers. They are all currently stripped of paint and I'm trying to decide what to do with them. I really love black and gold as a color combo but I feel like it just didn't quite translate. Maybe if I switch the colors and have black be the main color with gold accents. Any other ideas? Red white and blue??

Recently changed up the fill on my Taylormade RSI TP's. Original fill is black. Changed over to red with red numbers. Also, changed up my Odyssey Metal X Milled #1 putter to black out, with a red line. Just used acetone and a razor blade to remove old paint. Then filled with new paint, allowed to dry for about 5 minutes, then lacquer wiped over the area to remove excess paint. Sorry about the viewing angle.

Ping crossovers

Curious... two things. Which brand paint do you use that doesn't bleed and mix colors like that... and how the hell do you split your letters?

I know, right.

Ping crossovers

Well to be honest, it's nothing special...I used Sally Hansen finger nail polish because it was the cheapest brand at target that had the colors I wanted. When doing multiple colors you just have to make sure the lightest color goes down last. For instance, with the red, yellow, and green wedges I painted the red part first and allowed it to dry. Then removed the excess paint. Then painted the green part, let it dry, and removed the excess paint. And finally did the yellow. Allowing for ample dry time is key...don't rush it.

Now with the crossovers, I first did all three in different color schemes (bottom picture) and sent the picture to the owner of the clubs to let him decide which he liked the best. He liked the wavy, tye dye looking scheme so that's what I went with. For this it was actually quite simple. He liked it wavy so I didn't have to be as precise and I laid down the pink and blue at the same time. Then after ample dry time I buffed out all of the excess paint with some nail polish remover. This time I didn't care if the colors blended because I thought it might look cool, but I didn't really have that problem. Just make sure that if you want clean lines you are careful and that you do the lightest color last. And try to do red first as it tends to love to bleed over onto other colors (I learned this lesson doing my putter red white and blue)

Is there any other paint that dries all nice and glossy like Tarmiya, but comes in larger bottles?

I tried some Valejjo model paint, and it works great in fine engraving and stampings, but dries noticeably flat in larger areas (like a scotty dot).

Any other options? I use needle bottles, and Tarmiya being only 10ml doesn't come close to filling them.

Cheers,

Ben

Hope I'm in the right thread for this question.

I have a set of Covert Forged 2.0 that I want to take the red paint off of. I saw a set with the mod in an NCAA WITB thread here on WRX and they looked really sharp. I'm not looking to repaint them, I just want to take that red off. I'm a complete novice to this, so if I could get some guidance on what would be the best course of action for achieving this, I would really appreciate it. Would the instructions in the OP suffice?

Pic for reference.

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

Project from a couple weeks ago. No particular rhyme or reason behind the colors, just looked through whatever nail polish my fiancee wasn't using. I cleaned up the blue so that all of the text is colored--that was an in-progress pic.

I did some work on my s56's (I don't like red). I wanted to do the cavity badge (that says "s56") Masters green (as in Augusta). I tried several things first such as model paint and brushes, syringes, automotive touch-up paint, etc. However, since the badge was raised, none of those worked. I ended up buying Sharpie paint pens. The pens are oil based, so water won't wash them off or make them run. The paint pens also come in a variety of tips. I used extra fine on my S56's (the badge letters are very small). It worked perfectly with almost no clean up. Just make sure you don' keep the pen tips too wet (doing do could cause the colors to run). The Sharpie paint pens can be purchased at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, or any craft supply store.

The pens also worked like a charm on my Odyssey putters in filling in the Odyssey swirl logo on the back of the face (it is usually super small).
