Paint fill 101

after reading through all 35 pages of this topic while out of town on business last week (after hours of course :) I got the itch to give it a try. Here are the results....definitely going to strip them all and redo them next weekend (other than the irons) now that I am getting the hang of it. It is a learning process to avoid the bubbles you see on the driver and on the wedges.

Started out with an old beat up Ping Anser Driver to practice on. Moved on to the wedges, the Scotty, and then the irons. The irons were very difficult as the lettering is RAISED. Sanded the tops of the letters only with a dremel then very very carefully laid on the black and green. Looks a LOT better than the stock red and silver. Took me about about an average of 3 attempts per iron to get it right.

Let me know your thoughts

When cleaning up and wiping down with non acetone remover, it comes off a little too easy. I just bought some tamiya clear to hopefully add a little more gloss. I tried wiping it with paint thinner before to add more shine to it but no good. Practice practice practice. The paintfill was made to match Purple lamkin grips!

After lurking too long, and 51inches of snow with 13 more on the way...oh and I am a beloved Patriots fan, who just happened to really like the blue and green color scheme. ;)

My 2nd attempt at a set of irons. Testors paint doesnt work too well for me for some reason, i let them sit a week before cleaning them up. Not too upset about them but not super thrilled.IMAG2982.jpg

I use mineral spirits to thin the paint just a little before using enamel testors, really makes a difference on how smooth it goes on.

This is a great thread. Did the group ever settle on what is better for the soles of clubs expected to get lots of wear? Acrylic paint or nail polish? Anyone try on Ping i20s?

Love this thread and did some fill in my KZGs. Looks great.

I do think that the paint doesn't adhere well to the chrome and was mulling a way to scuff the chrome only where I'll be doing the fill.

Any ideas? A needlepoint pick with some grit on it would work great, but I can't seem to google such a thing, though I'm sure I've seen one before.

Thought I'd share my first paint fill attempt in honour of Mother's Day, while rocking the Bubba shaft!

Any critique welcomed!

Some of my previous work as well as painted ferrules with laquer finish to match my new Project X shafts and grips. I'm interested to see how long it will last before chipping. Conventional wisdom says that painting ferrules flat out doesn't work but we will see. I use nail polish for all my paintfill projects. Easiest method and pretty durable. My favorite paintfill has to be my CB4. It completely changed the look making the original appearance unrecognizable.

I wish I never sold my MP-32s :(

Your paint fill is so much neater than mine. What technique did you use to pain the ferrules? Tried painting them using Testor paint and never turned out well.

Is that a toddler shoe as a headcover? Or is that a headcover that looks like a shoe? Either way, I like it.

I haven't done any paintwork in a while on my clubs. I wanted to go back to a blade style putter so I snagged a good looking Scotty Cameron Pro Platinum Mil-Spec. I didn't like the color and it looked dull. I ordered some Tamiya paints on ebay and went to work. I have another one that i'll game and may put this one up for sale soon. Keep an eye on the classifieds.

this is how it was received.

I decided to make the sole a little newer with scotch brite green score pad and a little polishing compound. nothing heavy, light and back and fourth.

I taped off the shaft and heads using painters tape and Reynolds sticky Saran Wrap. I first sanded the ferrules using a 320 grit then used a spray paint for auto part trim accessories I think it was duplicolor metal specks and then used a lacquer finish topcoat

A little word of caution, I chose to experiment with this on my own clubs. I forgot to tell my club fitter to order me the blue colored ferrules when I got my irons reshafted. It was worth the experimentation instead of paying him to pull the shafts and throw on new ferrules. I'd strongly advise you not adopt this as a business practice. First, you'd waste considerable time and money on supplies doing trial and error figuring out a method that doesn't chip from bag chatter. Second, you'd see a much higher return and customer satisfaction opting for colored ferrules (which cost cents on the dollar) then charge your clients for an upcharge on those.

My first time refurbishing a putter. Baby steps - the last thing I wanted to do was ruin a nice Cameron. This Dead Center is like one I really liked when they first came out in the late 80's. It was pretty beat up but I got it for $20 on eBay. It was all DIY and trust me, I'm no artist. I'm more demolition skill level than finished carpenter. Bead blasted, angle grinder/polisher, Dremmel tool, buff and polish then paint fill. I've already ordered some more cheap putters to tinker with as it is a lot of fun.
