Covers for irons

Recommended Posts

Am I being too anal????
I recently purchased a brand new set of MP-62 irons. They just look so good and I know how bag chatter can mark them up quickly. I bought some nice Mizuno irom covers to protect them. How many other golfers use covers on thier irons??? I wonder if I'm being anal or do you think its a smart move.

What are you going to do when you have to hit out of a waste area that has pebbles and whatnot in it? There are 10,000 posts about this, and 10,000 opinions about it. You could try to read them all, or just skip it, forget the covers, and realize that your irons are going to get dinged up from PLAY, too.

Cover your putter and driver, and they shouldn't get nearly as marked up in the course of play. Forget about protecting the irons.

You asked or my opinion, so here it is. I find them to be a total aggravation. It used to be that you could really try and save bag chatter on a set of irons and get a decent buck for them when you sell them. That is not the case today. Look on Ebay, even the irons in mint condition are getting very low purchase prices. I find it looks cheesy, I am forever dropping one and have the group behind me picking it up for me, I like the sound o the irons clicking as I walk down the fairway on a sunny summer morning and found that they would rust easier if not 100% dry when the iron cover was placed over them. They are tools, not jewels. I buy them and use them. I take great care of them, but there is nothing wrong with bag chatter.

I will never use them but that doesn't mean you shouldn't.

You paid good money for those irons, who gives a D@$# what anyone else thinks. I understand they are going to get dinged up from playing but why not keep them looking as good as possible for as long as possible!

Used to anguish over this issue. Like others, I read the tons of posts out there. Here's what it came down to for me:
1) covers get lost and are a pain to put on/keep off
2) bag chatter can be minimized by running your golf towel loosely wrapped through the irons to and from the car
3) a post I read awhile back: irons are tools, putters are jewels. Putters unlike irons can be kept pristine year after year. For us average joes, we'll find ourselves off the fairway and in some really odd lies. Play what you've been fitted for. If you have real beauties, just take the penalty and drop it in the green stuff...unless its for your weekend bet. Then, that's a whole different call.

You use covers on your woods, why not your irons? I see nothing wrong with using irons covers, many will say it makes you look like an amatuer because the pro's don't. However, the pro's have a caddy to keep their irons pristine. I have tried them but no longer use them because I kept losing them. If you want them don't worry about what others think, just beat their score and smile.[sup] [/sup]

They're just irons. In my view, a golf clubs should not be considered an investment, but rather as tools to enjoy this great game we all know and love.
To each their own, but I don't quite understand the "pimp my ride" trend towards golf clubs.
They do look good, but how can a golfer be free to play the stroke when there's worry about being marred. Even a little bit of that thought can impede the swing. When one bad pass could create a toe mark... what then? Do you sell them?

i dont find irons to be an investment but i know i make a lot less money than a lot of people on here so when i picked up a set of mp-68's this past summer i simply wanted to keep them looking nice since i know i will not be able to get a new set any time soon like you see a lot on this sight. I picked up some white Mizuno irons covers with little clear plastic windows on the top so you can see what iron they are in the bag. I like them but my dad lit me up for having them. I dont really care I just want my irons to look as new as possible and i feel these help.

I'll tell you what. True story.

I was the BIGGEST anti-iron cover player you could ever meet. I despised them and thought that they were soooo corny.

Last month (about) I went out and picked up some MINT, SEXY MP 67's done in black chrome. Right after I bought them, I couldn't bring myself to let them get destroyed by bag chatter and/or nicks from car rides, ect.

I went on eBay and found some really bad a** mesh Mizuno iron covers. While I know they aren't legitimately made by Mizuno, I had to get something to protect my clubs.

NOTE: Mizuno specifically states that iron covers SHOULDN'T be used because it can cause rust. I will just have to be extra careful. I found the most breathable set of covers I could find and I'm sure everything will be fine.

Honestly, it's all personal preference. I just want to protect my clubs. They will get beat up enough from the range sessions and ton of play. Why allow them to get beat even more from travel and chatter, ya know? Go with what you feel...

I realize you want to keep you're irons looking great outtajersey, believe me I do understand. They look awesome! But how long do you really see yourself using them? My guess is that it won't be long before you just say "forget it". I would gag a little each and every time either taking them off or putting them back on.

After all, we're talking about steel here (albeit a softer grade) which are going to wear with play anyhow. So I just don't see the point.
Similar to rain hoods or especially slickers for your bag... when it rains, clubs will get wet. There's just no way around that. It's why they make rain gloves and rain gear. But I digress :D

My opinion: If you are using iron covers to "protect your investment" or worrying about resale value then you have the wrong set of irons. Some people wanna use them to avoid bag chatter, I don't understand that but they're your irons.

Although it was nice of you to ask us for our opinions but in this case you didn't need to ask us for our opinions. It's your money and you can do whatever you wish with your clubs.

I'm not that anal and play with no covers but my regular golfing buddy likes keeping his irons in pristine condition so he's got covers for his irons. Recently, he got a very small rock scratch on sole of his 5 and 7 irons, ordered new clubs to replace them. Actually keeps a knife sharpening block in his bag to rub out any scratches on the soles. It's his money and property, I'm used to it and never give it a second thought anymore.

I sell his clubs for him here and on Ebay and it does bring bit more money for him this way.

I totally agree, at some point I'll say, screw it, I don't need covers. I'm certainly not going to put them on and off between shots. I'm mainly looking for protection when I'm driving like a maniac to the course and when they're in my house at the mercy of puppies, my girlfriend, and family, ect. Anything could happen there!
