Staying In Shape

Recommended Posts

How Are You Doing It
How are you staying in shape to keep playing in your older years? I am making a real commitment this year to get in better shape. I have had a hard time lately getting older and decided to do something about it. I am going back to walking nine again, and getting back in shape. Right now the weather is fighting me with all the rain lately and I hope it does not get to hot either. I am super busy and trying to keep very active.

I've played a couple of hours of pickup basketball two to four times a week for the last 20 years (47 years old) which has allowed me to get away with my atrocious eating habits. But with torn ACL and meniscus taking the hoops away for now I've been forced back into the circuit room, and I have to say, treadmills and ellipticals suck compared to playing ball. Fortunantly the wife has started working out hard and at least going with her stops me from finding reasons not to hit the gym. It's going to be a long 12-15 months til I can get back in the gym (my kind of gym, the kind with hoops and balls).

Good luck with yours!

You might try the original P90 program by Beach Body. Great mix of weights, core, flexibility and cardio. Low impact cardio should be okay for your knee.

Can be done in the home....slogan is Power and shower in an hour. Program is six days a week...but can tell you 2 days on, 1 day off for golf or brisk walking, works really well for a keeping in shape program.

Just finished week 7 of 13 doing P90X. Pretty tough workout for an old feller like me, but I do my best and forget the rest. I've dropped about 15lbs. and 2" off the waist which means my golf pants should fit better. Lots of stretching and yoga, so I think I'll have better flexability than I did before. Just celebrated my half century mark, so with carrying my clubs and maybe the P90 program as maintenance, I'm hoping to have one of my better golf seasons this year.

Figured by the knee reference that might have been directed back to me. Thanks, I've heard some about the P90 program and the low impact sounds appealing. I'll have to look into it.

64 yrs old, 6 to 8 hcdp. Treadmill, carry the bag, light wights, as stated above, for reps, eat what the heck you want 2 days (weekend), and watch the alcohol/carbs the rest of the week.
If you can't carry get a 'push cart'. Some of my buddies laugh at me. I'm no fitness nut, but these guys laughing have trouble getting in and out of the cart, smoke, and eat/drink like they are still twenty.
Then they complain about loss of distance.
Most important thing- accept limitations and play to your strengths. Be willing to hit a 3 iron when you used to hit a 5. Short game practice!

At age 61 I've found that Lap Swimming is the thing for a good strong core. My son in law is a swim instrustor for new Nauy recruits in basic training. We were playing together, and I was whinning about my loss of distance. He told me the best "core workout" is freestyle laps. Guess what! he's right. Swim 750 to 1000 meters 5 or 6 days a week and a good strong EFFORTLESS piviot is what you get.

Massage therapy is a proven way to stay in tune with the body and increase circulation and flexibility and decrease the chance of injuries. Not to mention it feels great!!
The fitness trailer at Senior events is booked solid for Massage!!

Swim three days a week and lift weights twice a week. I lift heavy but am very careful. I have lost 70 lbs over the last 14 months. Feel like a new man. Went from playing "A" flex graphite shafts back to steel regular firm flex. Hitting it better too.
