Any word on what airline?
In many countries the baggage handling has been outsourced to airports and by them to separate companies. This means, that airlines themselves do not handle the goods that much at all. The responsibility is airlines, but the damage might have been done by another company.

And in the end, it was just clubs.

Did Callaway buy the rights to the Cleveland VAS irons because that hosel looks very similar!!

On a serious note, a big wtf!!! How does that happen? It was dragged so long the bag caught fire? C'mon that was done on purpose.
its a wonder Fedex dont offer a service to the Players where they fly clubs to the next venue overnight Sunday.pick them up Monday lunchtime or later from a designated point.Fed ex could even have a temporary office at each venue.

I would ask my Sponsor for a new bag at each venue and ship my clubs in a secure box without the bag.

I still dont get. how they can catch fire??? Did they drench them in kerosene and light them up?
I'd imagine sparks from the clubs, shaft or bag caused flammable materials in or on the bag to catch fire. That explaination isn't as much fun as thinking about a crazed airport worker riding a flaming bag of clubs around the tarmac though....

The story behind the "accident".

A lost or delayed bag is one thing. Golf clubs that come off the luggage carousel looking like this is another.

When Lee Janzen touched down in Las Vegas International Airport on Saturday, he was stunned to find that his clubs were, for all intents and purposes, destroyed. His lob wedge, for example, was bent 40 degrees, while other clubs looked like they’d been put through some sort of metal grinder.

“I opened my airline bag and it smelled like something was burning,” Janzen said via cell phone. “When it came out on the belt I could see there was a hole in the bag and some foam sticking out. I thought, ‘Oh my gosh what happened to my bag?’”

Janzen, who flew Delta out of Orlando over the weekend to Monday qualify for this week’s Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, said he’s never seen anything like what happened in all his years of travel. He also said he thinks it happened on the ground in Las Vegas and not in Orlando or with the Delta crew. Janzen added that something similar happened to PGA TOUR rookie Ben Martin in Las Vegas earlier this season when all 14 of his clubs were “decapitated.”

“To do that to somebody’s baggage and to throw them on the carousel like nothing happened,” Janzen continued. “I would want my people to walk them out and start the process.”

When Janzen, who still isn’t certain exactly how the clubs got destroyed other than to speculate that they were jammed into something and dragged, did approach the airline with the damaged clubs an agent at the counter suggested that he could rent a set of clubs in the meantime.

Naturally he didn’t need to, and that’s where a (somewhat) happy ending to the story comes in: Callaway had an exact replica in Janzen’s hands by Sunday afternoon and he qualified for the tournament with a 66 on Monday.

Said Janzen, “Hopefully it’s just the beginning of the story.”

Please push this Lee Janzen! You have the time, resources and attention to deal with this. If this was me or you we'd be fighting the airline for years to see a dollar out of it.

Now that would have been a story....He should have taken the airline agent's suggestion and rented a set of clubs in Vegas, then shot 66 with junk clubs and a Diablo driver with regular shaft. Then he could have had the free breakfast that the gecko promised of the english muffin and jam. That was a complete dramatization of course but it still sucks for Janzen.
