Airline trashes PGA Tour players clubs

Ok not saying it was right but you guys must remember when they are pulling the train of cars they are 10-12 long normally. So if a bag falls at the end and your bookin along you can drag it, you would never feel it. When it caught fire he stopped. Then saw it. What I find weird is they put it on the normal bag rack instead of calling him on the overhead and asking him to go to the lost and found bag room. The only good of this is he is a tour player and most likely has another set or 3 of the exact same setup, so they just made him another back up and got his other clubs sent out.

My rant on traveling with my clubs....:)

I just returned from Kauai, it is a regular trip. The TSA abuse my clubs somehow every time; there is no accountability for their actions. If I complain about the state of my clubs on arrival, the the airline says it is a TSA problem and there is no way to know who the inspector is who went through my bags. My underwear is inspected by #12, but the person rummaging through my luggage needs privacy. It is too bad the people working behind the scenes can't treat the bags like they give a s***.

When I go to Hawaii and know I am going to play a few rounds I like to take my clubs, in a hard case. I basically assume that something will be jacked up when I open the case and unload my clubs. Sad!

Wait, did I mention that my driver mysteriously snapped at the hosel (sp?) on my first day..... the good news is that I got to/had to demo a couple of drivers while I was there. Club ho having a vacation romance.... :-)

All of you chomping at the bit to blame Delta need to do some reading. Lee Janzen says he believes it was the fault of the ground crew in Las Vegas, not Delta.

since tour issue equipment is $$, insurance claim against the airline is gonna be sweet!
Why would tour issue equipment be valued any/much higher than standard equipment? For you they may be more expensive because of availability to public but looks like tour vans turn out tour issue equipment in a flash for pros.

And another thing, nobody should be happy about accidents and glee about it as in the end they just bump up the price of insurance.

Not surprised. About 8-10 or so years ago, my hard case showed up in baggage claim area with a big melted hole in the side. Fortunately, none of my clubs was damaged but my bag was scorched a bit on the side. As that hardcase was ruined so I bought a Club Glove bag with stiff arm, never had a problem since then.

Kudos for Callaway in getting a set to Janzen quickly.

i am sorry. you cannot in any way say that what they did is understandable in any element of what happened. The fact that they knowingly took a broken, burnt and battered bag of clubs...and did not give those to a cust svc rep to deal with...and instead threw them on the same luggage carousel all customers grab their stuff from...is insane.
not to mention how do you think the senior mgmt at the company felt knowing that a bag like that was seen by other customers lined up by the carousel to grab their baggage...it makes all those seeing it view the company badly.

there is no way in any tiny way to acknowledge this as ok...an accident with bag..yes..but after that...no way. its unacceptable.
"I opened my airline bag and it smelled like something was burning," Janzen said via cell phone. "When it came out on the belt I could see there was a hole in the bag and some foam sticking out. I thought, 'Oh my gosh what happened to my bag?'"
Another Al-Qaida bomb failure.

Lee turn it over to the FAA and Homeland Security to investigate. At least it might get the incompetent baggage handlers off the tarmac.

Has there been any follow up to this story?

Seriously would like to know if the police got involved. This had to have been done on purpose.

I'm not sure what I find more amazing; the fact that Lee Janzen flies commercial (at all) or that a LW can be bent like that by anything.
How much money do you think Lee Janzen has built up? Billions? Flying private is insanely expensive....The guys on tour often split costs, get it taken care of by the tournament that wants them to show up and many have sponsorship with netjets or a similar company that takes care of their transportation......
Over a 25 year career he has earned about $15 mil. Not anywhere close to be able to afford a private jet to every tournament. Also keep in mind that he hasn't won a tournament in almost 15 years. The fact that the article said he had to qualify for the tournament he flew to isn't a good sign of where is career is currently.

Very few tour players fly privately and sponsors like Marquis Jet & NetJets rarely provide free travel (even to the guys with logos on their shirts). The kind of tournaments that provide transportation are in the prime season and only do so for big name players that will draw crowds and Janzen is not one of them.

It is unfortunate that this happened but after what I assume is years of traveling experience he should have known better and used a rugged hardshell case.

This thread actually gave me an idea for when I travel with my clubs. I have a hard case but to further protect the woods from the TSA inspector I will remove the driver/3wd/hybrid heads (Titleist 910) and take the heads with me in my carry on baggage. Just an extra precaution to prevent them from snapping them and or improperly packing the clubs after inspection. The irons/wedges are still at risk but it will at least take some of the risk away from traveling with my clubs.
