Airline trashes PGA Tour players clubs

Wow. Good thing Cally stuck up for him! He certainly has an avenue to pursue litigation against Delta, but I'm not sure of the assumed rights of the bag handlers in transporting luggage from drop-off to pick-up.

That's just amazing that the airlines could do that much damage to a set of clubs, then not even notice until the bag simultaneously combusts!

Just another reason to travel by train.
The airlines managed to drag Lee Janzen's golf bag behind the luggage tram and destroyed his whole set. The 60* wedge ended up at 22* loft and 30* lie.

And THAT'S why I don't fly with my clubs...
Do you ship them ahead of you via FedEx? Was thinking of exploring that option for my Dec. trip to Doral.
If you go to Doral you also need to think about the chain of evidence at the resort. My advice, keep your clubs with you in the room overnight and carry them back and forth each day. Last time I was there our company had an outing. One of our customers signed up for rental clubs. Well, there was another guest of the resort that had a very similar name to our customer -- his clubs ended up on the back of our guy's cart. Our guy plays golf twice a year whether he needs to or not and he didn't know the difference. I don't think Doral figured it out until we left 2 days later. Our customer fired about every ball the guy had into various lakes and who knows how many sky marks he put on the poor dude's driver. I felt bad for the guy.

As for Janzen's bag. Like the article said, someone on the ramp did that on purpose. Delta has a ramp/baggage employee who has a serious issue with professional golfers. They need to investigate it.

The only clubs that have caught on fire for Janzen in a while.

On a similar topic when I was in college my coach backed our 15 passenger van over a player's clubs after practice one day. It bent every shaft and broke all the wood shafts right above the hosel. I remember he picked his bag up and the irons were all bent. The headcovers were still on and in the correct place. He pulled the driver headcover off and it was just a shaft sticking up. Everybody was like "OHHHH!". Not funny at the time but funny now to think about it because the guy was the most "OCD" on the team about his stuff and coach basically berated him all the way home for leaving his bag behind the van even though the door was still open and we were still loading stuff up. Coach was up in age and never thought anything was his fault.

A girl on the women's team asked her dad who did work for the Nationwide tour to reshaft the guys clubs and he took care of everything free of charge.

Several years ago I flew out to Pebble Beach and my clubs and bag got beat up up pretty good by the airlines, shoe were lost etc.. Was pretty pissed off-Pebble Beach and no sticks- and went to the luggage supervisor and show him my damaged equipment. Told him what the replacement value was and he wrote me a check on the spot. Can't remember which ariline. Even though they trashed my clubs they made up for it.

OMG, which airline? Which city? I'll avoid it ay all costs....
Guys,

I travel a LOT and damage happens on all airlines. And to the quote above..."at all cost".....check this out. Info was obtained at each company's web site.

Delta nonstop Orlando to LAS...depart 6 Oct return 13 OCT $470 round trip

Southwest nonstop (Supposed low cost leader) depart 6 Oct return 13 Oct $888 round trip.

Wait...what about bags fly free on Southwest? Yes, 2 free checked bags. But golf bags are $50 regardless of your other bags so now your price is $930

Delta charges $25 for first bag and $35 for next bag...even if one bag is a sets of clubs. So that adds up to $60 for a total of $530.

So Delta, on this particular day is $400 cheaper.

I used to drive to Birmingham (a Southwest hub) thinking I could save. After a little research, it became very apparent it was not the case.

There's a reason Southwest doesn't display their fares on Priceline, Orbitz, Travelocity, etc. If compared against other carriers, the truth would be immediately evident...they are not even remotely the "low cost" carrier that they want you to believe through their slick advertising campaigns.

So, with a $400 savings, you could fly Delta and ship you clubs, via FedEx or UPS....FULLY insured and still have extra money for the casino.
Or fly the "darling" Southwest and take your chance with your sticks on them. Of course, if they are damaged, you have the same "Limited Liability" protections of any other airline.

Here in ATL, what really sucks is SW purchased Air Tran. They are a great airline with nice perks. But soon, no more. Just another SW cattlecar.

SOUTHWEST is almost always cheaper for me, plus, does Delta ever run on time?

in the last month i have been on 6 planes of Delta's due to work booking my flights. all but one was delayed either for maintenance or because it was already running late or because some tech had to sign off on some paper work about the plane. i have never been more frustrated by an airline. now, my bags did get there un-burned, so no worries, but i did miss 2 connections because of the delays. 2 of those trips were to Atlanta actually.

i hate Delta airlines now.

as no frills Southwest is, i prefer it in every way. maybe i get lucky with them, but i always arrive on time. i flew to Michigan in July on Delta and for my golf bag it was $60 each way.

What airline?

By Brian Wacker, PGATOUR.COM

A lost or delayed bag is one thing. Golf clubs that come off the luggage carousel looking like this is another.
When Lee Janzen touched down at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas on Saturday, he was stunned to find that his clubs were, for all intents and purposes, destroyed. His lob wedge, for example, was bent 40 degrees, while other clubs looked like they’d been put through some sort of metal grinder.
“I opened my airline bag and it smelled like something was burning,” Janzen said via cell phone. “When it came out on the belt I could see there was a hole in the bag and some foam sticking out. I thought, ‘Oh my gosh what happened to my bag?’”

Janzen, who flew Delta out of Orlando over the weekend to Monday qualify for this week’s Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, said in all his years of travel he’s never seen anything like what happened. He also said he thinks it occurred on the ground in Las Vegas and not in Orlando or with the Delta crew.
Janzen added that something similar happened to PGA TOUR rookie Ben Martin in Las Vegas earlier this season when all 14 of his clubs were “decapitated.”
“To do that to somebody’s baggage and to throw them on the carousel like nothing happened,” Janzen continued. “I would want my people to walk them out and start the process.”
When Janzen, who still isn’t certain how the clubs got destroyed other than to speculate that they were jammed into something and dragged, did approach the airline with the damaged clubs an agent at the counter suggested that he could rent a set of clubs in the meantime.
Naturally he didn’t need to, and that’s where a (somewhat) happy ending to the story comes in: Callaway had an exact replica in Janzen’s hands by Sunday afternoon and he qualified for the tournament with a 66 on Monday.
Said Janzen, “Hopefully it’s just the beginning of the story.”

You're wrong....At least Orlando to Las Vegas

OK....

I took your advice and tried nonstop flights departing on 13 Oct and returning 20 Oct.

Your right....Except the $200 savings is on Delta.

Round trip non stop Delta $373 Round trip nonstop Southwest $571

In fairness, you can get the price down to $469 (still $100 more on SW) if you don't mind one stop enroute.

But of course, one stop means one more chance of being delayed and one more opportunity to have your clubs damaged during their transfer from one plane to another.

And over 7 hours travel time verse 4+30 on the nonstop flight.

Like I said, I travel on planes 3 to 4 days per week and yes, you will occasionally get a better price on SW, But more often than not, you don't.

Where you do save a LOT on SW, if it's a short notice trip or walk up fare, but two weeks out is BS.

BTW, Airtran on same dates is $606 with one stop in ATL...over 7 hours travel time.

How about 1 Dec and return 7 Dec??.....SW is $410 Delta is $229

At least things seem to be working out for him. About a year ago, I flew home from Las Vegas on Delta and upon arrival, well actually after I got home I found that the head was snapped on my G15 driver. I have a Club Glove bag. I immediately went back to the airport and presented them with the damage and my boarding pass.

They agreed to replace the driver up to $300.00. Had no problem at all. Thank goodness I had already played in my tournament!!!!

Dec 1 to Dec 7 BWI to MCO SW $198 + $50 for golf clubs= $248 Delta $190 + $60 for two bags fee( Clubs are considered part of the regular bag fee)= $250

SW wins by $2.

Anyway, I'll drop it. I also shop the cheapest fares I can find, sometimes SW, Delta, Air Tran, American.

But, there's a reason SW only advertises on their web site. They are very clever at advertising and marketing. If they ran their pricing on any travel website they would lose a lot of business. Don't believe it? Pick a few round trip December dates from Orlando to Las Vegas on SW and get their price. Then go to Orbitz and plug in same dates. Southwest won't even make the top 5 in terms of price.

On time stats US Gov Bureau of Transportation Statistics Jan-Sep 2011

Southwest 79.37%
Delta 80.71%
