Tiger is lost

Excluding a 1947 film reference we think we could give him a run with regards to clubhead speed.

Woodland, DJ are top athletes for golfers and I'll admit probably better overall than Tiger with youth and exposure to other sports on their side.

But who knows how to quantify the combination of speed, balance and eye hand coordination?

My original point was that I'll tend to see posts on Tiger now being a short hitter and ready for the old age home.

He hit the longest drive on a hole last week, over 360 (obviously with roll out) but nonetheless, in a field of young bombers, he was the longest drive of the week.

So, there you go...
Ha well I'll take it if we're only counting one drive.

Signed,
Mike Austin

Chuck just hits the earth hard enough so the planet spins until the ball lands in the hole.

Chuck's divots are so big, they are filled with sand and used as bunkers.

At a pro-am,the drag from one of Chuck's drives once sucked in Kevin Na and blew him into the sun. That is why Na is always so mad.

If Chuck's ball lands next to a tree, the tree runs away before he gets to it and kicks it in half with his "foot wedge".

I have a question...

If Tiger is striking the ball as good as ever then why doesn't he stuff any more approach shots?
Like the one he stuffed to 5 feet to extend the match against Watney, only to miss the putt? :black eye:

Wasn't that the only shot he stuffed against Watney and it wasn't a kick in either.

Tiger used to stuff the ball from 150 yards and in... he's not doing that anymore.
That is the question.

He botched a couple of perfect full wedges at the tourney Phil won, flew the green on one. Pretty bad distance control issues.

Definitely needs more reps.

In 08' Tiger was number 1 on tour in distance to the hole from 100-125 yards in... 07' Tiger was 3rd... Just look at the stats.

Tiger has always been pretty good from 150-175 yards in BUT he was also pretty good from 150 yards out or less and now he's just not hitting it close enough from those distances with this new swing.

He definitely does not hit it as close as often as he used to. But, he did on the final approach at Chevron and on 18 against Watney. I couldn't imagine it's because he is not concentrating on the other shots. I wonder if he is thinking less swing thoughts and is focused on hitting the shot in those pressure situations. I am thinking TDO may be on to something in regards to Tiger being a 'feel' player...

So is Foley just a fraud with Tiger and he is a miracle worker with Hunter Mahan?
Horses for courses and teachers for students. Please see my previous post.
Foley, with the exception of his wedge teachings, is a compotent teacher. With the right person, he and his student could have great success. But he is also very mechanical and very much about positions, not feel.

How do you think Seve would do with Foley as a coach? Probably about the same as Woods.
Every golf teacher is a "fraud" someway or another. They are "salesmen" selling you their theories on the golf swing. They try to get you to drink their brand of kool aid which is somehow someway different than the other "salesmens" kool aid. I teach quite a bit and I don't teach the same way as the next guy, but we all teach the same thing just different ways.

He is old relative to most of his competition.

He is coming off a more serious injury than most of his competition.

He is coming off of a more major swing change than most of his competition.

To expect him to be at his best, given all that, is unreasonable, IMO.

Every Tournament he's played in since the Australian Open he has been in the top 10 in GIR. In fact, in Abu Dhabi he was around 2nd and in the Australian Open I think he was 1st, the websites for the different tours display the stats differently but heres a quick summary.

Pebble Beach:
Driving Accuracy: 4th
GIR: 8th
Strokes Gained - Putting: 175th

Abu Dhabi:
GIR: 72.22% The Winner Robert Rock, GIR: 73.33% Keep in mind his GIR stats stayed at 72% while still only hitting 6 greens on Sunday, the guy basically hit almost every green the first 3 days of the tournament.

Australian Open:
GIR: 75%
The winner Greg Chalmers 69.44%

The guy just can't putt like he used to.

I don't think his swing is all that bad, it just isn't nearly as smooth and consistent as it used to be. He used to have one of the best swings but now has an average swing. His putting, on the other hand, is indeed poor. He might need to spend some time with the Stocktons, or try to go back to his old stroke. I also wonder if his vision has deteriorated. I had the Lasik procedure done about tewlve years ago, and after about ten years I had to have it redone because my eyesight had deteriorated slightly.

I'm not talking about GIR's... I'm talking about distance from the flag on approach shots from 150yds and in... which if you think about effects his putting stats... you'll make more putts if you're closer to the pin.
How much closer than 5 feet can he be?! He missed 6 putts under 10 feet for him to win. I'm a tiger fan, but that is weak. I hope he's worked on it and is ready on Thursday.

OK, let's put it this way....let's say you give him his old putting form back just in time for the Masters, and you leave the swing as it is.....wouldn't you put money on him winning Augusta?

Versus....his old swing and current putting?

You answered a challenge about athleticism with an argument based in swing speed. Not exactly apples and apples.

From a pure athleticism standpoint, I think Tiger would fall somewhere between #2-4 on Tour.

As always, I come to Golfwrx to learn. When I hear guys talking about a dude on tour, almost 40, who has had nearly a dozen surgeries on his knees, eyes, etc. and then simultaneously hear he is either the most athletic or at worst the 4th most, I find it puzzling.
For the sake of clarity, in your above statement can you detail how you define athleticism, specifically what are the criteria that makes him anywhere from 2-4.

Seriously? The old swing was among the most dominant, explosive and dependable in golf history. There have been plenty of great putters with mediocre swings who amounted to next to nothing. They makes nice putts for pars.

I'd take the old swing and the margin for error it provided on hole after hole and be snickering at anyone who wanted to come from behind via the putter alone. For one thing, if he had his old swing back the confidence would soar on the greens. Nowadays he often can't hit the shot the situation requires and nobody can convince me that type of doubt doesn't transfer to the greens.

His old swing got him in lots of trouble as well, with miracle recoveries as a matter of his routine...

I think you're looking at his old swing with rose-colored glasses....current one is not materially worse. His short game and putting don't bail him out anymore.

See now this is what happens when you get all tom foolery on the quotes.

The original quote:
I think yesterday, I heard them say that TW had the longest drive of the week on a particular hole, like 360 yards so let's not forget a healthy Tiger is the best athlete on tour with as fast a swing as anyone.

Yea so I was addressing the latter part of his quote.
