One is a constant weight shaft - the CFS is a constant weight shaft with fewer steps to provide a smoother feeling shaft. the CFS stands for "Control - Feel - Stability" - it plays very similar to the old Z-Z65 shaft IMO.
The AWT is a variable weight shaft. AWT stands for "Ascending - Weight -Technology". this basically means the long irons shafts are lighter than the short iron shafts, to encourage greater swing speed with the longer irons to promote a higher ball flight and heavier weight short irons to control trajectory to prevent ballooning and too much spin. Kind of like Pings take on "flighted" shafts - they work well IMO.

I personally found the AWT shafts to be to light and whippy, so that's why I was wondering about the CFS shafts and what they were about. I think I'm more of a zz65 shaft type guy, or a DGS300 if you will, so trying to understand their proprietary shafts (and their website really doesn't address this).

I mentioned this in another thread, but that kind of urks me about Ping. It's bad enough we have all of these proprietary shafts, but they don't describe them or give much in the way of specs on them imo, so it's hard to understand whether I need to upgrade or not (which they charge for)

I've owned and played with both in G-series irons and the CFS is not "stiffer" in my experience. I'd go ZZ-65 if you felt AWT was "too light and whippy".

Low hc former s300 player now using CFS hard stepped one time with cushin inserts in my s56s. Excellent shafts...tight, crisp feel, flat trajectory and straighter ball flight versus my previous set.

AWT have lighter feel, higher launch, more spin.
I disagree. I weighed a set of G20's w/CFS shafts and G10's w/AWT and the G10's where the heavier clubs (by about 5 grams). Did the weighing thing after the CFS felt lighter...and they were.

EDIT. AWT - Assending Weight Technology. Basically, short iron shafts weigh more and are stiffer than long irons. That may explain why I noticed AWT shafts weighed more, I was measuring an 8 iron,

Specs of the shafts.

AWT
Material Flex Torque Weight
Steel Soft R 2.1° 96g
Steel Regular 2.0° 99g
Steel Stiff 1.6° 108g
Steel X-Stiff 1.5° 117g

CFS
Steel Soft R 2.2° 94g
Steel Regular 2.1° 99g
Steel Stiff 1.8° 109g
Steel X-Stiff 1.6° 114g

AWT go higher for sure. CFS also have a better feel to me, but that's just personal of course.

Yea, caught the feel part. Guess I just don't understand how some clubs (shafts) can have a "lighter feel", when they are heavier.

So how would a Stiff CFS shaft compare to a Stiff Nippon pro 1050 GH shaft?
I don't believe these shafts are anything alike. The CFS is a low launch, low spin shaft.
Hmmm Nothing alike?
The CFS is a constant weight shaft 109grams and 1.8 torque.
The Nippon pro 1050GH is a constant weight shaft 109.5 grams and 1.8 torque.

My point was maybe the are the same shaft in fact?

Can you order the AWT shaft in G20 irons without an up charge?
I have no personnel experience but have read here several times that you can pick any of the proprietary Ping shafts without upcharge. AWT, CFS, ZZ-65 and maybe others, not sure.

The Nippon pro 1050 is a tad less stiff. I found they ran out of gas at the 6 iron. Had they been hard stepped the performance may have held out to the 5 or possibly the 4 iron.

The only true way to measure stiffness is by a frequency counter. The higher the number the stiffer the shaft.
As far as CFS vs. AWT it is going to be by personal preference as to which is better. I play Rifle and have
played them for 30 years or so and for me there is no other shaft out there that compares to feel and
reliable frequency across the set. They are Frequency matched and if a set is not matched then the set
will not feel the same thru out. I also play with Ping S57's , I took out the AWT's and put the Rifle's in.
