Boss just asked if we can play Oakmont...

We have business up that way in a couple weeks. His question to me was "how do we play Oakmont". I said I think he could have his private club's Head Pro call Oakmont's to get us on and we'd pay our own way (obviously) but that I had to "check with some people who would know".

 

Anyone know if it will work this way at Oakmont?

I would have the pro call but they are kinda picky about things like that but never hurts to ask they just might say come on down.

Some clubs will accept a letter of introduction from another club for playing privleges. You will have to contact the club and see what restrictions are, if any.

It usually also depends on how elite your private club is. Bob Ford is the head pro at Oakmont. He is also the pro at Seminole. There are some clubs in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are that have similar types of membership. Let me know if you were able to get on.

Have your boss's head pro give them a call and see what they say.

Its only fair to let you know that clubs like Oakmont get more of these types of calls than other private clubs do and this makes this sort of thing a little bit harder. You never know though, best of luck.

I got on Oakmont last summer. The Ernie Els for Autism site had opportunities to donate to the charity in exchange for a round at various private clubs. Oakmont was one, so I was able to get a threesome that included lunch and supports a great cause. No, I won't tell you what I shot. Yes, it was as great as I had hoped.

His course is Woodmont CC, a US Open Qualifier course (Shigeki shot 59 there a few years back). Head pro David Dorn, head teacher Wayne DeFranceso.

Definitely not exclusive to the tune of Congressional (down the road) but still 'exclusive'.

We will dig deeper into this tomorrow.

Unless you're with a Monday outing that rents the entire facility, or a member gets you on, it's not gonna happen.

I called a few years ago after qualifying for the PA Open which was at Oakmont that year. I know Bob Fords brother really well as he is our area Taylormade rep and I was a head pro at the time. He was very kind, but declined my request saying that I can only get on with a member. It can't hurt to try, but don't get your hopes up.

Your not going to get on Oakmont without a member. I tried for awhile and only got to play 2 years ago after being invited. I will say it's my favorite course I've ever played. It didn't hurt I shot lights out there.

IIRC didn't Oakmont not allow any practice rounds for PA Open participants?

Oakmont's exclusivity makes some of the more prestigious private courses in my area (Aronimink, Merion) look like muni's. If you get on kudos to you but I don't see it happening without a member.

Played Oakmont last summer. Shot a great round there and it was an amazing experience. I would guess you don't get on without a member.

Is Merion [i]relatively[/i] easy to get on compared to Oakmont? Maybe there is still hope as I've always been fascinated with the place. I'm pulling for the OP to get on. Maybe the boss knows a friend of a friend of a member.

Woodmount is a pretty good club and the pro's are pretty well known, I would say you might have a change to get on Oakmont. If not Fox Chapel and Pittsburgh Field Club are 2 pretty solid courses in the area.

Fox Chapel is actually hosting the Senior Players Championship (a major on the Senior tour) this summer. it is a great layout and you can be sure it will be in great condition with the upcoming event.

Yeah Merion in the past has been fairly easy to get on to, you just need to call the pro shop a few weeks ahead of time and ask to play on a Monday and they are usually fairly accommodating. With the open coming up next year I can see them tightening up non member play though

the sleeper courses in pgh area are : the field club, fox chapelgolf club , and totterridge in greensburg pa (rocco has interest)
