How to fix shiny, slippery grips

Scotia

Recommended Posts

I have a Scotty Cameron Select Newport 2 putter and the grip has become a little shiny and slippery.

Does anyone have a suggestion to restoring the grip? I'd prefer to try and restore this grip than re-grip as a first option.

Also, does anyone know which Golf Pride grip is similar to the grip used on the Select Newport 2? (Need to plan for Option 2.)

Many Thanks,

Scotia

You can try soap and water, but usually after they start to get shiny it means they need to be replaced. Not sure if any of the current GP grips are close but you can probably find that grip online somewhere.

If you have some kitchen degreaser like "awesome" or something like that you can try spraying that on the grip, letting it sit for a few minutes, then giving the grip a good once over with warm water and soap. This has worked well for my NDMC, not sure how it will do on the putter grip though. Worth a shot at least.

There was a thread here a couple weeks ago about a guy who steam cleaned his grips.
Just for fun I tried it on a putter with a garment steamer I had at the house.
Sure enough, it worked better than any other cleaning or sanding.
Seems like too much work to do a whole set of clubs, but maybe one here and there .

Scotchbrite and dish soap is what I use. Renews slick rubber grips to about 75% of new condition. Rub down aggressively, rinse and dry.

Why? I see guys on tour using SuperStrokes and I believe there is at least one guy out there who still uses a $5 Pingman. What makes the Scotty Cameron grip the "correct" replacement?

I'd just replace it. If its really that shiny and slippery, it will be an uphill battle to bring it back. Just spend the $5 on a new black pingman grip and your unsore, relaxed, scrubbing muscles will thank you.

When grips get shiny and smooth that usually means oils from hands have penetrated them, to the point they need to be replaced. Nothing I know of takes oil out. I have a few buddies that have grips like that. Weird part is, it doesn't bother them one bit. I suppose there's an argument that says their handicap reflects that.

My grips get replaced around eight months. During that time, I rub each grip back and forth with a damp towel, before using it. Oh, and I have oily skin.

Perhaps you could contact GP and ask them which grip they would suggest for your Newport Select 2.....You're welcome.

That's what I did & I'm sorry I bothered - SC grips are amoung the worst I have ever come across! - I put a new replacement one on my Pro Platinum (red grip not sure what it is called) - After 3 months of normal useage (about 3-4 rounds a week) it needed replacing again! - I shelled out for a more expensive SC grip (lack with gold letters) - It was better, but again only lasted about 6 months
Unless you are a 'completeist' find a grip you like & put that on - Don't have my Scotty putter anymore, but just put a SuperStroke on my new NC putter - A bit more expensive than a GP or Lamkin but I reckon it'll last a good few years ... Paul

The only putter grip that actually wore out on me in the way the OP is describing was a Scotty grip (red cord). I have had a number of GP grips, some Winn, and they all lasted up to the day I sold the putters.

Green ScotchBrite and Parsons Sudsy Amonia . Put 3 cap full of PSA in a spray bottle with warm water, spray the grips scrub with the SB pad , wipe dry witha lint free towel. Dish soap has oils in it that will dry and crack rubber.

These threads about how to clean grips come up regularly and it seems everyone has their own method, some of which advocate no cleaning, just replacing. To each their own of course, but as someone that has tried various methods, the simple soap and water with scotchbrite rub down flat out works. I've not noticed any oiliness from dish soap, nor have my grips dried out and cracked. Splitting hairs on this one. Not saying ammonia water is bad, just unnecessary.

I'm on the opposite end. I like my putter grips shiny and hard/slick. It makes me feel like I can hold it lightly as opposed to the sticky/grippy grips. I know it's backwards but it's just me. I'm trying everything to get mt new cameron grip like that now.

I avoid replacing my grips as long as I possibly can, as it's a bit of a pain in the a** (adding 5 wraps to 13 different clubs gets old quickly). I find that firmly scrubbing dish soap (diluted in water, obviously) with a medium/hard bristle toothbrush and then drying thoroughly works quite well. When the grips have indentations (where the fingers/joints have worn away the rubber), that is when it's replacement time.

I am playing the Lamkin Crossline on all of my irons and the NDMC+4 on my wedges. Both sets of grips aren't even a year old. Yesterday I decided to walk when it was 90 degrees outside to get some extra exercise. I live in Alabama where the humidity is ridiculous and I couldn't hold on to my clubs. I was swapping between 3 gloves and wiping my grips off before and after every shot and this still didn't solve the problem.. I know full cord grips would solve this problem, but I know how rough it is on people's hands. Is there another alternative?
I agree with you I use Dawn dish soap with a scotchbrite pad rinse and dry good. I can not relate to Dawn having oil in it because they actually used Dawn to clean the waterfowl in the Gulf oil spill. I mess with a lot of antique clubs and I have restored quite a few old rubber grips to playable condition with that method

Sandpaper, then Clean and Tacky, let it soak in about 30 secs and use the grip brush tube they supply. If really old might have to do twice (the entire process), but that stuff is magical on rubber grips.
I live in the south too in South Carolina and can relate to what you are saying. That is one of the reasons I never liked Crosslines. Now I played cord grips for years but got away from them because frankly they got expensive. I went to the Golf Pride Tour Wraps I keep them dry and this is my second season with them and have not had any sweaty slipping issues with them at all. Our humidity today right now is 100% and the heat index is 108
