G25 Iron Review (Low Handicapper)

Instant Offense

Recommended Posts

Ok, after 5 rounds with these I don't understand why I can't hit them. I can say I have only hit 3 good iron shots in 5 rounds. Has to be me right? What the heck..

Coming from playing players cavity clubs like TM MC's and AP2's, can it be that I just am not comfortable with the G25's? Help me!

I've had my G25 irons for 3 weeks and they continue to amaze me. My handicap is down to 7 and am able to hit shots that I've had trouble with before. Several times I have been blocked by tall trees and was able to easily clear them and make easy pars. I even sank a 7 iron from 140yds for a deuce on a par 4.

It took 2-3 rounds to get used to them, but now it almosts feels like cheating. I have been able to knock them down and work them with ease. A truly fantastic set of irons.

Back with the G25's after a stint with 710mbs & 712 AP2's. 712's are backup. The 712s still work great but man are the G25's on another level when it comes to forgiveness and hitting greens.

Shot -1 at Moorpark CC (playing the 2 toughest 9's) my last round. In fact shot 2 under on one of the nines and only missed one green (misjudged distance but still made par) Freaking incredible clubs. I played Moorpark twice with the G25's and shot under par both times. I've never shot under at Moorpark until I put the G25's in the bag.
I remember reading with interest that you had abandoned the G25 for your Titleist. I figured it would happen for some people, not all clubs are completely right for everybody. I fooled around one time with my MP32 and went running back to the G25s.

Welcome back and congrats on the great rounds. Speaks volumes for a club when you can shoot a personal best on a course you have played before. I have done that on two different courses since getting the G25s in May.
I've been playing golf for over 35 years. Many of those years were spent with blades. I hit some shots with the G25 and can't stop laughing on how well they perform on mishits. Because I know with 100% certainty that mishits that put me on the green with G25's would be well short or in hazards with blades. Most clubs perform the same on well struck shots. But it's what you can get out of your misses that will dictate one's overall score. It really means the difference between hitting the green or hitting out of a bunker trying to save par. It's really tough to beat the G25s in that aspect.

Yes there is an adjustment period for sure....go to the range and find it in the dirt. Took me 2-3 weeks to get the big improvement.

That must be extremely frustrating. Definitely something VERY different about the G25 compared to what you came from

The obvoius come to mind, length, swingweight, lie angle, grip size????? The irons you owned before, do you still own them. If so it would be easy to do a side by side comparison. Maybe JW will read this and comment. Throw out a post in the club making forum and see what they have to say. I feel for you because I came from a very different club, blades, G25 are shorter, fatter, uglier lighter and It took me one range session. GOOD LUCK

Yea, just looking for encouragement like this. Way too many positive posts on here to think it is the club. Trying to keep myself from selling for some i20's.

I agree that even my crappy shots made the green yesterday instead of bunkers or water. That's where they are money!

How many of you guys playing the G25 irons also play the fairways or hybrids? I just picked up a 23* hybrid to replace the 20* G20 hybrid I finally gave up on. I thought the irons were good clubs. The hybrid might be even easier to hit than the irons. This 23* G25 goes higher and farther than the 20* G20 it replaced.

Are the G25 woods just as stupid easy to hit as the rest of the G25 line?
What did you like about G25 hybrid more than G20, I still love my G20 and still prefer the beefed up iron kinda look but that club can be easy to hook with all that offset
Bingo. It was the hook part. I just hit too many shots to the right (i'm a lefty) with it for me to be able to rely on it. When I didn't hook it, I loved the G20, but i'm distance challenged and I really need my longer clubs to be consistent. The G20 hybrid just wasn't consistent enough for me to use.

I really didn't like the G25s coming from 800 Pros. I even tried to sell them on here. But now we are cool. Never going to be as sexy as the mizunos.

Just another check-in on this thread. Played my frist round in over a month last Saturday. Hit it OK at best (and I mean like the best way to describe the ball striking of my round was bleh), 16/18 greens on a 7,000 yard course, 34 putts, 71 (-1).

These things are just amazing. On number 6, I had 222 left to the pin with a carry of about 195-200 to clear water short of the green into a slight breeze, hit 2" behind the 4 iron and put it on the front edge (so probably 205 carry). It's a terrible strike but these clubs alone kept that ball from getting wet and adding atleast 2 strokes to the round on that single shot.

The S55s look sexy, but you'll have to pry my G25s out of my cold dead hands.
Holy $h1t! You weren't striking it well that round and shot a -1 from 7000 yard tees and hit 16 of 18 greens? OMG. I'm playing i5s right now and hit them pretty good, but this thread is really making me want to demo a set of G25s on an actual round of golf too see how my GIRs gets affected! I only hit 4-10 greens on average and the only thing that keeps me shooting in the high 70s and low to mid 80s is my chipping and putting. When those two things are off, the score creeps up into the high 80s! Grrrr.

Will I look like a poser with G25 series from driver to PW? ;P
I was hitting the driver fairly long that day so there were wedges being hit into some par 4s and I birdied 3 of the 4 par 5's but still. These are good and at least twice as forgiving as the i5s. Which has greatly helped my scores as my ball striking, even when striking it well, is very moderate at best.

I tried the G25's this afternoon at my Roger Dunn in the Coachella Valley after playing a round of golf. Went in to buy some tees and gloves and I'll sometimes demo an iron that catches my eye. Until today, I haven't hit anything that I liked better than my 6 year old Mizuno MX25's. That changed today...

I'm a short hitting (230 yd drives) 8 handicap who likes higher launching irons with lighter steel shafts. The G25's are definitely thicker than my MX25's but the weight felt about the same. I started with the 7 iron and kept hitting shots that were slightly longer than my MX25's (I think the lofts a slightly stronger in the G25s) with a nice, high flight, and a baby draw that kept landing right on the center line of the simulator.

I tried the G25 5 iron next because I'm somewhat inconsistent with my MX25 5 iron. Again, the G25 went higher and a few yards farther than my MX25 but the best thing was how I kept getting consistently good results with the G25's.

I don't change clubs often and $699 is a lot of money for me, but I'm seriously thinking about saving a little money each month and purchasing the G25's...maybe I'll wait until the G30's come out and get them at clearance price.

I've been playing the G25's since the beginning of June. Switched from
many years of TM 300's.
2 complaints so far. For the life of me I can't draw the ball and 2 when the wind
is 25mph + l-r or r-l the ball will not move. Strong r-l I aim right edge of the green
and the ball ends up on the right edge of the green.
All in all these are the best clubs I've ever played.

I have found these irons very easy to draw and fade. I did go with the CFS regular flex shaft, came from DGS300 as an experiment and assume the soft shafts are what allows me to work the ball. What shafts are you playing, did you consistently draw your other irons.

The ball NOT being moved by a 25mph crosswind would seem to be a positive as oppossed to a negative. Not sure what you mean. 100% agree about best clubs ever played, if hitting greens is important!!!!!!

Just curious as im looking now, if i got the G25's and i hit them high now what kind of shaft should i look at?
Dynamic Gold, either the regular type or the SL should help some. Don't expect a shaft change to bring the flight down a whole lot though. The head is designed for hitting the ball high, and that's what these clubs do.

Since the head is designed for hitting the ball high that offsets the lower lofts of this set on launch and drop. Maybe it also gets more distance too. If so that's a positive. I wish all of the armchair physicists and engineers would get over their misplaced angst about some loft measurement on paper being different than some old loft measurement for a totally different club design used to be before someone decided to start really engineering club design.

Just a guess but they are probably lighter than your old clubs....timing will take a while to get used to.

What shaft? CFS stiff is around 109 grams I think... I had dgs300 which is more like 125g.

This.

I recently switched from Titleist 981s with S-flex steel shafts to G25s with R-flex TFC189i graphites, and I'm just starting to get comfortable with them. Those 981s liked a quick transition, but that doesn't work at all with the Pings. Training with an Orange Whip has helped me overcome my urge to fling them into the dirt from the top.

When I demo'd the G25's, I hit the CFS regular shaft better, but I bought stiff because I have played DG S300 shafts for 20 years. Could that be the issue?

I did custom order my G25 with c-tapers (lowers launch and spin) quite a bit. Just lasers. Played again today on a longer course around 7,100 and hit 15 greens and shot 71. This course requires more 3 wood and hybrids off the tee so i did hit more full irons. Just enjoy the ride guys.

TBD - G430 Max 15* - 818 H2 19*- Sub 70 Pro 23* - i525 6-U - SM9 54* / 58* / 62*  - F22
