Graphite Shafts in your wedges?

After many years of golf playing stiff shafts and the fact i'm not playing that often now I've finally seen the light of day and stepped down to regular shafts.

 

After a fair amount of monitor testing Regular flex is now the path for me. However not just regular, but graphite regular to be exact (G25's). I increased my 7 iron club head speed up to 87/88 mph from 83/84 MPH but the big turning point was in the long irons 5 & 4 in particular, i can actually launch them correctly now, something i've always struggled to do!

 

So the question is do i go all out and try some tour wedges with graphite shafts in?

 

Im in Australia so they are not the easiest thing to get your hands on to demo so i would probably have to order blind if im going to go for it.

 

Currently gaming 588 forged chromes with the stock steel shaft.

If distance is not a concern (and it shouldn't be with the wedges) then steel should be fine assuming you have no ailments that require you to use graphite.

I use 125g graphite shafts in my wedges, more for the vibration/shock reduction than anything as I tend to get tennis elbow in my left arm (I play golf right handed) when I use steel.

Do you find that partial shots are a problem with the G25 PW? If not then you should be fine selecting the same shafts in the Gorge wedges.

You might want to specify a swing weight progression with the SW and LW, I prefer a 2 swing weight point progression between my wedges eg: PW D2, SW D4, LW D6

I have a set of Nike Pro cavities which include a 45* PW, a 50* AW (gap) and a 55* SW with Project X 5.5 graphite. I have found them to be accurate both in direction and distance and the ball flight doesn't balloon. It has made me look at ordering a 60* Callaway wedge with a graphite shaft that is available online for a very good price.

I'm using Steelfibre in my irons and wedges, but a big part of that is basal (thumb) arthritis. I tried wedges with steel for a short trial this summer, but went back to the steelfibre quickly.

Played G25's with stock (regular flex) graphite shafts this season. I added a matching SW to the set in July to complement my Gorge 60* WS wedge. Really liked the seamless transition from GW to SW. Also, I tend to use my SW for full shots (70 -90 yards) and my Gorge from the sand and delicate pitch/chip shots. Have also swapped out the Ping CFS wedge shaft in the Gorge and have gone to a KBS Black Nickel shaft in regular flex. Couldn't be happier with the performance of my wedge set-up.

hey golfdollar, where did you get the reshafting done and how much did you pay?

well i use 110 aerotech shafts and am contemplating
getting fuji mci 120s 8 iron shafts for my wedges,

graphites are not like what they used to. they play like steel
and can be tuned for flex. take your pick attas tour, aerotech 110/125
recoil proto 110 120 in f4/f5 etc etc.

just remember to err on the softer shaft for SW LW where you do more
partial touch shafts compared to say a gap wedge. my experience and .02 cents

I used the AXE Wedge shafts(95s) for a while late last year. My ss is 92 and I felt they performed great. I rarely swing full on wedges. I have since switched to MLTi Pro Wedge for simply fact of heavier weight.

I use graphite regular (vs proto 100 hard stepped) in my irons. Wanted more heft in my wedges so i got steelfiber 125 regular wedge shafts. I like my 54 vokey with this shaft alot. Great accuracy with full swing or 3/4.

My 60 vokey lob wedge-- not so good with the steelfiber. Even at D-6 SW it lacks flex and feel. Sorry they don't make the 125 in R except for wedges. i would be happy with the 8 iron shaft for my lob wedge if they made it.
