Just got back from two weeks in Portugal. It’s always been one of my favorite countries to visit because of the people, the weather, and views. Now I can add golf into those reasons. My guys on the trip absolutely LOVED Portugal and the courses. We played Oitivos Dunes, Royal Obidos twice, Praia D’el Rey twice, and West Cliffs twice. If you are looking for a very reasonably priced fall golf trip with PERFECT weather, give Portugal’s Silver Coast a look.

OITIVOS DUNES

Good design with a mix of tree lined and open links style holes. Really nice collection of par3 and par5 holes. Situated on the cost with sone nice views. Conditions were good with very tricky greens with a strong couple finishing holes.

ROYAL OBIDOS

Interesting design by Seve with quite a bit of elevation changes. Was in great condition since The Portuguese Open was placed there the week before. In was overwatered and playing a bit soft, but in good shape with really thick, brutal rough. A few guys lost balls just steps off the fairway. Some great views and quirky holes. Definitely worth the play.

WEST CLIFFS

Amazing views and design. Definitely the tougher of all the courses with very undulating greens. Course was designed by Pete Dye’s niece, and it’s definitely visually intimidating but has more room than it looks. Really great elevation changes, and use of the land. This is one of those courses some will love, and some will hate. A couple of the greens have some “interesting” slopes and kickers that you need to play multiple times to learn. Greens were really good speed, fwys were average, but Ray Charles must be in charge of the bunkers…. They were absolutely awful. Some holes more rocks than sand, some holes with no sand at all. If this course was conditioned properly it could be a top 100 contender. This was by far the favorite course of the group. Had a nice holeout eagle from the fwy on #4!

PRAIA D’EL REY

Really fun course to play with some very nice views. Challenging enough, but not as demanding as West Cliffs. Cool mix of tree lined and Oceanside links holes. Course was in good shape and had a good mix of tough and easier holes. The guys really enjoyed this one too.

Heritage Hills in Shepherdsville Ky.  Been trying to get up there and play it for 4-5 yrs and finally made it with a buddy of mine this past Friday. Beautiful course, going back to play again next year when it’s all green and not dormant fairways.

Old Works Golf Course

Amazing course in a fairly remote area of Montana.

WOW brings back memories.

The slag is interesting for and creates a cool contrast you never see.  During the summer it can get so hot that the bunkers aorund the greens when hitting out, the slag was damaging the greens from getting so hot and melting.

Great course, been a long time since I have playe it.  Still think Wilderness Club is one the best I have played.  Love the views and routing.     *grew up in MT as you can probably tell lol.

Do they still have the 3-4 pratice holes around the driving range?

They still have the practice course and it is maintained to the same standard as the main course. IIRC I paid $75 for the round which included cart, range, and practice course.

I m sure the place is under yards of snow now.  Good looking place.  Too bad it is not a year long place.

Yeah we got two snow storms last week 13" in the latter one and today is an ice/snow storm so it's definitely under a blanket or two. Golf season is way too short here.

Tire tread reminds me of early years at Chambers Bay near Seattle, Washington.   I played there in 2008.  The course was still raw.

I am sure this will be a fine course as it matures.

Playing Tehama yesterday, prompted me to see if I had any pics of The Preserve. The opposite side of Carmel Valley. The two courses couldn’t be more different. The Preserve is located in more of a high meadow.

TAD, how did you like Tehama? I played it many years ago as it was our first NORCAL TCC event.

How did you like going from #9 to #10? It’s a replica of Lombard street in San Francisco known as the crookedest street in the world.

It's always interesting going up that path and I mentioned elsewhere, it's probably good thing that you go up the hill at Wente instead of go down, regardless of having a speed governor on the carts.  Heh.

The elevated wooden cart path with the s turn or switch back is the one that caught my attention.

I liked the course. More playable than I was expecting. The only flat lies were the tee boxes.😄 And the holes were named after Clint’s movies. Not sure if there was any reasoning to the names though.
