WITB for bcflyguy1: all the 2021 clubs are in!

Recommended Posts

Do you still have your Stroke Lab Ten S in the bag? I bought one at the beginning of the year and really wanted to keep it in the bag but the weighting was really throwing me for a loop. The head felt very heavy and I really struggle with my speed on the greens. I ended up taking it out of the bag, which really bummed me out because I love the look at address and the feel of the new insert, but it just seemed too heavy for me.

My "nekked" Versa 2 is back in. Not that there's anything wrong with the 10 S; it just didn't have enough to knock the king of the hill down.

Finally have some pictures up, mostly for the non-standard stuff you might not see every day that I have in play. Glad to answer any questions you might have, cheers and thanks for looking!

  • bcflyguy1 changed the title to WITB for bcflyguy1: testing for 2021 has begun, going to be a fun year!

Been able to do some early testing and I'm pretty well set on going with two drivers this year and skipping the fairway wood all together.

Driver 1: Epic Max 9* set to 8* with weight slider full toe at 46.5"

"2 Wood": Epic Speed 12* set to13* at 44.5"

2 Hybrid: Apex Pro 18*

Irons: haven't been able to hit the new Apex or Pro yet

Wedges: MD5 52 and 58

Put in my request for 2021; the two driver set-up was intriguing but decided not to go that route for now.

Driver: Epic Max 9* with EvenFlow Black 65 6.5

Fairway Wood: Epic Max 13.5* with EvenFlow Black 75 6.5

Hybrid: Apex Pro 18* with EvenFlow Black 85 6.5

Long Irons: '21 Apex Pro 3-5 with AMT Tour White X100

Irons: '20 Apex MB 6-P with AMT Tour White X100 (all irons +.75" and 1* weak) (all clubs above gripped with NDMC +4 Align midsize)

Wedges: MD5 Raw 52-10S and 58-12X with DG S400 (both 36.25 long with NDMC +4 Midsize without Align)

Putter: White Hot OG WS

Back in 2013, I was doing fittings for a different OEM than I currently work for so missed out on the chance to bring in a set of the '13 X Forged irons. Been looking for the right used set ever since, and finally found one recently (many thanks to my guy @sfehlman22). Got them shafted up at the right length with KBS Tour S+, played a couple rounds with them in which I hit the two best 5 irons of my life on back to back days, and they're still so good. If you want a no nonsense forged player's CB, you'll struggle to convince me that anybody has topped them in the 7+ years since then and I test EVERYTHING. Finally found some time to take the cavity badges out this morning, and a little time/heat/Goo Gone/fine tipped screwdriver later they're even more squeaky clean than they already were.

I hit them and certainly understand the cult following they have. For me and the conditions I typically see, they didn’t have enough bounce.

I like it...I went to a 2 hybrid set up last year, 17* and 21* and pulled the 4i out.  Thinking about putting the 4i back in and go PW, 52, 58 as well.  Playing a 4 wedge set up right now but I think i need more at the top.  What was the deciding factor for you or have you always been a 3 wedge guy?

I actually had been a 4 wedge guy in the past, but with some encouragement from my pro decided to dump the 60* and go to 47, 52, and 58. That freed up a spot at the top of the bag to help shorten up the golf course. I’m better able to cover the distances required with fewer wedges than I was able to do so at the longer end with fewer options. Admittedly, I’m not the best wedge player so it didn’t make sense to have that extra tool that I’m not particularly handy with anyway. Rather have something that helps me better leverage my strengths.

Shot 76 the other day to break a streak of 4 straight rounds under par, but responded well today. 45* overcast and windy, but I was comfortable as a pig in mud for some reason. Must be my Swedish Viking lineage. This little heater I’m on continues, just in time to swap out 13 of 14 clubs.🤪

Also mentioned this elsewhere, but finally got to hit the '21 Apex Pro fitting iron in a 7 while warming up to play last Friday. Didn't have TrackMan on or anything, but my initial impressions can be best summed up as follows (read in cheesy Cockney accent), "Oh 'ello, you alright?"

My '20 Apex MB's went in the bag for their first round today, along with my 58* Raw X grind MD5. Putter didn't get the memo about our tee time today, apparently. Played bogey free and hit 16 greens, but only had two birdies and don't even want to total up the putts. Rancid...

New grooves will need some breaking in to calm them down, but the MB irons and MD5 are so good. So nice to have a driver with some MOI to it as well this year. Didn't realize how badly I was missing that until it was given back.

Also got to briefly test drive a LA Golf Trono 65X in the driver while warming up today. Quite possibly the most unique driver shaft I've ever tried, and want to spend some more time testing it even though I don't think it's the right fit for me. Think very soft handle, insanely stiff mid-section, but then a very active tip below that. It definitely launches higher than my XD 60 TX, but the different feel was causing my strike pattern to wander toe side which is unusual. Do try it if you get a chance; VERY different.

All the ‘21 clubs are in play now, so will get some bag pics taken soon.

Got my first round in the new Callaway ball that will officially be unveiled this coming Tuesday. Weird round as I was able scrape it around in 71, but could count the number of shots that I was satisfied with on one hand. When I was able to get out of the ball’s way, it was quite impressive. Definitely worth giving a test drive.

Based on what I saw today, the XLS may be Callaway’s best ball to date. You might say that's a pretty low bar, but the current CSX in the black box was a massive step in the right direction. If you’ve been playing TP5X or Left Dash V1X, you need to give this ball a chance. XLS has all the performance attributes of those with perhaps a bit less click to its feel.
