Odds of Getting on The Old Course As A Single

Recommended Posts

I had NO issue at the end of April getting out as a single, if I wanted to I coulkd have played every day for 5 days straight more than once per day on the old course. I shot a very good score for me in the mid 70's and under my cap, so I walked away with a great memory and did not tempt fate (or my wallet) by playing again. I happened to go on the first day of summer rate and I told that week is always quite though.

One thing I don't see mentioned often is that St andrews has a great deal to by pass to play golf as much as you want on all course but the old course. For 200 pounds you can play unlimited round for 3 days (they don't need to be consective). In april it was quite enough that I could play in 3 hours and ended up play three rounds per day . I also played Kingsbarns one morning which is my new favorite course in the world and I have played most of the well known big name courses.

Amazing how it has grown into itself only being 15 years old or so. Feels like it's been there for centuries. (I know the back story, and the old course, but it was a potato field only a few decades ago.) Killer track and well worth the track south of St Andrews.

100% guaranteed!

I showed up at 430 am and was 4th on the list. Ended up that a full tee time cancelled and they paired the 4 of us together at 8am.

Tee times have the right of refusal....first on the list was a lady and 3 tee times refused to accept her to join their pairing....too bad, lovely lady and good golfer!

Anyways, you may get picked up by a pairing earlier.

I haev to think 2o years from now it will get to host an open - just too good of course not to. As much as it is a great course, affection for the course comes down to some other details : I got paried with three teaching pro's all scratch golfers. I was 5 hdcp at the time so it was nice to be out with some good players, the sun was shining, a nice breeze and I shot 74 and played out of my mind going par - birdie comming in (two very tough holes).

I played terrible on the front. Double crossed my caddie the entire way. Got my stuff together on the back for a 37. But got paired with a couple of brothers from Ohio, and the one shot 71 for the day. Said he had played it 40 times and was his lowest score. On top of the great company, it was crystal clear. The oil rig and the lighthouse off the coast were completely visible. Even caught my caddie staring off into the sea. Said they saw the lighthouse 7 times the year before. SEVEN. He knew the exact number! Right then I knew it was a spectacular day in Scotland.

  • 3 years later...

I'm in for the 48hr on Monday, but if we aren't successful (me and my pops) I'm going to try and queue out on monday morning, don't know if my dad will be up to it, but has anyone ever gone out with more than 1 person?

There's been quite an array of them in the thread - what time should I be there?

To be different I rocked up at 10am one foggy day in October but the very busy lady in the shack told me she would get me on somehow. i busied myself putting on the Himalayas (a must) and otherwise pottering around and then a spot turned up at 1pm which was about the last tee time. Still foggy as I teed off (oh was that an experience heading off down the 1st at St Andrews) I was paired with some St Andrews University golfers who acted as my kinda-caddie. They said after seeing my distances Hey look we are going this way but you go over that way...It pleased me to make par a few times while they were still going. The fog eventually lifted about 3pm but it was a great day. Thanks to those young guys. ps Birdie on the 8th if you are interested.

I did it one August and was there about 315am and was 7th in line. Got on around midday. Going again next month and will try at 3am, much later in high season and you are pushing it.

Heading over next week, most people have recommended to me that if we have a foursome we split up into two twosomes. Does that seem right?

OG SIM 10.5* - Ventus Black 6x

BRNR 13.5 / Ventus Blue Velocore+ 7s // TM Qi10 5W/ 7W Ventus Blue 6s

Yeah there is no chance of getting on as a four. The guys at the desk will let you know what spots are available and how to split up. You can look at ballot results online and see what spots are free.
