Q: Why does TMAG inspire so much hate? A: They deserve it. Comprehensive examination.

Recommended Posts

Nobody likes a crook and for many well-informed, equipment junky golf nuts, that is what the majority of the golf equipment industry has become (save for a select few companies), with TMAG being the fattest, slimiest crook of them all. I have never seen a more concentrated, calculated effort by a golf equipment company to mislead and misinform their core target market. Here are just a few of the ways they have done that:

  • Lighter + Longer = Faster marketing that started way back with Burner 07 but was ramped up with the Burner SF 1.0 and 2.0 models, stripping the club down to nothing to shed grams off the total clubweight figure, completely ignoring the fact that the stock swingweight skyrocketed to D9 with the SF 2.0, which many players struggled with. Not to mention they were a stock 46.5'' long!!!!
  • Changing adjustable sleeve terminology in the R9 Supertri from Right(open) to Left(closed) over to the new verbage Higher(closed) to Lower(open) in an attempt to put the 'amazing loft adjustability' in the limelight and sort of have buyers forget about the serious face angle repercussions of such adjustability
  • The painful 'drip-drip-drip' product release schedule they started using beginning with the R9: 440cc adjustable with weights, 460cc adjustable without weights, 460cc adjustable with weights, 440c adjustable with weights and asp, 460cc adjustable with weights and asp, 460cc totally adjustable with 1 loft option, 460cc adjustable with sliding weight and 3 standard loft options. This is like if Apple released the Beta version of every prototype, just give us the best practical version the first time around.
  • 1 static loft offering in the R1, you had to get lucky (low fade player or high hook player) for this driver to me 'tune-able', otherwise, you were just adjusting it to the extreme in one direction or the other, which in reality makes it not very adjustable at all in a fine tuning sense. Absurd idea.
  • Low and Forward CG technology introduced in the R11s and expanded upon until the most recent release, the SLDR. Yes, this concept works well for a select niche of players. The high-speed, high-launch player that has a very consistent contact patter, but TMAG markets this as a beneficial concept for ALL golfers. Baloney.
  • The +17, +15, +3462034750892435089 yards from year to year marketing scheme. Yes, the RBZ and RBZ Stage 2 are different but there is not enough advancement in face COR, even in fairway metals, to logicall discern such a jump in yardage, assuming the same well-fit components are used in each.
  • The massively oversized, deep faced fairway metals hovering around 200cc in the non-tour versions of the original RBZ, although they were dialed back a little Stage 2 models, offer extremely limited versatility for probably over 2/3's of amateur golfers, most of which fight the inability of launching the ball high enough with fairway metals.

That's enough for now, didn't even get to the absurdly juiced iron lofts. Feel free to add to the list or offer some differing point of views. I LOVE a good debate.

Cheers

Well I don't believe this. Makes me mad, false advertising. You obviously can't put that much cheese in one little bite. Scientificallyester studies just show that the cheese isn't really that cheesy, the cheese just cheeses into the cheez-itCZ2.jpg

Hey all, sorr about the double post, didn't realize it until EVERYONE pointed it out on BOTH posts. I'm not mentally unstable or overly uptight as some have suggested (in not such nice tones lol), I just LOVE golf and every facet of the game (especially equipment) and enjoy talking about every one of its' intricacies. I sell golf equipment for a living so this is a topic that comes up a LOT and makes it difficult to help customers because they start out so misinformed after drinking the OEM's kool aid, and no TM is not the only one but IMO one of the biggest offenders. Just trying to stir up interest about a topic I deal with on a quasi-daily basis. Thanks for all the replies.

Absolutely, I love football too, but I hate the new rules stripping basic defense down to a lingerie league level of contact.
