Great bunker video Dan. One question, do you have a thought or technique you use to hit the sand precisely where you are aiming. I seem to always hit the ball thin out if bunkers even though I try to hit a couple of inches behind?

I hope that makes sense. Thanks again for the video!!!

I know I'm not dan, but I had a problem with that a while ago. Instead of hovering the club directly behind the ball, I held it a few inches behind the ball and I envisioned returning the club to that same spot. That worked for me, idk if it will help you.

You know I never gave much technical thought to using bounce on a wedge or short game technique at all I just practiced until I got better. I never tried pitching off the putting green before but nobody was around today so I hit 4 balls right off the green like 30 yards or so. Never marred the green at all.
I have noticed before on my flop type shots the grass moving behind the ball as I swung through so I think using bounce is why I am able to pitch and flop with confidence if the lie is right.
Bounce is very important to make things easy from a nice lie you just don't have to be perfect at all. It's for sure not the only technique you need to own but its an easy one once you get the hang of it.
Leading edge diggy shots with the leading edge taking a divot past the ball are different but also useful. I think so much of short game is reading the lie/shot and choosing the right shot for you to get the ball close. I also play the vast majority of these shots with a touch of an open clubface like he said.
Iteach is pretty much all over it with the short game imo.

See ball hit ball

Dan,
In Utleys method, it seems to be very similar except he uses the pivot to drive it. Is your method more of a feel of the arms driving the shot distance? Like how you use arms to regulate putting distance? It would seem they both work but need to find out what the player likes to feel as his distance controller. Hope that makes sense.
Hands and arms are only direct contact to club. Never going to be precise distance control wise using pivot for distance control. Utley swings his arms around his body and is not using his pivot to control distance

Could you explain why using the pivot would be bad for distance control.

Given that I'm still a freshman in golf, and english is not my native language (written explanations don't really work for me), I'm just praying that Dan makes a similar video on hitting a simple wedge shot of a fairway and out of rough (this is probably the most relevant for me :superman: ) :)

P.S. I also read something like Dan prefers to use one club for all the shots around the green.. Does that imply that he also uses it for the bunkers?

Its tough to find a wedge in 12 or 14 bounce in a 58*. All I can find is Titleist, which I already have a 58*12 bounce but its getting pretty beat. Don't really want to shell out $200 for a Scratch wedge either

Cleveland has 58/12....in the 588, 588 RTX, and in the older models, too.

That looks like Portland Golf Club in Oregon where Ben is a member since he was very young. I also had my wedding there haha. Great video, basically explains the same thing as Dan but with less detail.

Dan
Great video
I do seem to notice a little "floating wrist hinge"

Question for you: The 40 yard shot kills me every March and April in Florida. Dormant bermuda that is tight (almost no grass) & wet. It's like pitching off of mud

How to handle this scenario with my 59*?

I tried Dan's short game technique today on a very soggy golf course. I must say things went pretty well since I did it without any practice or experience other than watching the video. My thinking was if the technique works to use the bounce on very tight, hard lies, I would want to use the bounce on wet, muddy turf to prevent the leading edge from digging. If there are any other tweaks to incorporate for soft conditions I am eager to learn about them. Also, what loft and bounce is Dan using for these videos?

If I remember correctly, he uses a 60° Vokey V grind wedge, which is a tour only grind. You can get it through the Vokey Hand Ground program. I think it has approximately 12° of bounce.

Dan's short game ideas made a profound difference in my short game.

Last time I played I had a 30 yard pitch to a pin only three paces from the front of the green. Pulled out my 60, ball forward. Carried it to the front of the green, bounced once and checked up right next to the hole. Easy birdie.

My old method would have probably resulted in a blade over the green or chili dip.

Even less than perfect contact turns out good. Ball will carry less and roll out more, ending up in a similar spot. So you look good in front of your buddies even when you know you didn't hit it as well as you planned. : )

Have you tried a Scor wedge chipping this way? I never liked my Vokey...just came from the store and seems what was said above that Cleveland and Mizuno have the best options but I found 2 Scor wedges in the discount bin.

Bought a new 58* 12 Cleveland cg14 for less than $60 at beach couple months ago. TGW has CG15's for less than $70 in 58* 12 as well

FWIW ......as I type you can get a Scratch 8620 milled 58 degree with 14 degrees of bounce for $69.99 at Rockbottom. $57.39 if you got a coupon.
Would 14 degrees of bounce be too much for this technique?
I play with a 53 and 58 both with 14 degrees of bounce. I don't have a problem as I play off bent grass in the Chicago area which can be damp or dry depending on the time of year.

I believe Dan recommends at least 10*, with 12* or so being his preference and I am sure he wouldn't care if a guy used 14*.

Hstead - thanks for posting. I saw Dan in June & have played best golf of my 26+ years playing. Showed up hitting worm burners & shanks. Seems I've shot 70's as much this year as rest of my career, with little to no practice required. Took 6 weeks off then showed up on first tee w/ no warmup to shoot 76. I don't have talent to do that; it's all Dan.

Anyhow, I royally screwed up by not paying more attention to short game part of my time w/ Dan. I needed so much full swing help ... Looking forward to watching videos & trying Dan's technique in Myrtle Beach this week.

Steagles, don't discount yourself too much man. I know Dan is better than good, but you still have to hit the shots. The one thing I will say though and you can obviously attest to is this notion that you have to go backwards before you can get better and that it takes two years yada yada yada. That is total bullpoo. Dan can make a guy better very very quickly. There is no need to hit half shots for a freakin year. Something is very wrong if you are taking a lesson and not improving. Dan's guys improve pretty much immediately.
