Best Bang for Your Buck Shaft?

the FLATSTICK

Recommended Posts

Been window shopping ebay for awhile and have seen some pretty good deals but I dont have any experience with any of the shafts that are in my price range. I dont want to spend more than $100 for a shaft so ive found a few that fit what im looking for just looking for some input on which one is the best deal and will give me the most bang for my buck. I would shop the BST but im a smooth swinger thats usually somewhere between 105-110 so im looking for a stiff and not any xstiffs which is usually all i see up there (yes i know WRX is the land of the bomber but im a realistic person). I currently play the callaway razr fit with the stock made for ripd nv in stiff and it is just way to whippy and soft, it gives me way to much spin that even on a firm fairway i may only get a yard or two of roll and on soft fairways i actually get backspin cuz my ball is usually behind its pitch mark and my ball just goes way too high which im guessing is from the spin numbers and the from the shaft being too soft im convinced its a regular flex with stiff printed on it.

So now the options:

1 Project X blue selling for $60

2 Diamana Kaili selling for $78

3 Aldila Voodoo selling for $83

4 Diamana Whiteboard selling for $90

5 Matrix Radix HD selling for $60

6 Aldila trinity green selling for $60

So all im asking for is some feedback on the shafts aforementioned and which ones you think are good deals, which shafts you think are the best to fly lower and spin less than what i currently use.

Callaway Razr Fit 3 wood
Taylormade 09 burner 3 hybrid
Callaway 09 x forged 4-pw

Get an Aldila VS Proto from Golfworks for 45 plus shipping. Check out the reviews on it first but will definitely bring down the launch and spin.

The reviews appear to be gone, but is it definitely low launch and low spin?

I had to laugh at your comment as I'm trying to do the exact same thing as you, but I'm a regular flex. I've almost given up on the BST for regular flex driver shafts.

It's all completely relative (anything will be low compared with that made for Rip'd NV) but vs-proto is not really considered a low launch / spin shaft. Sort of on the low side of a mid. Maybe between a low and a mid launch shaft.

Best bang for the buck tends to be grafalloy and the classic Aldila and UST shafts. Vs-proto included in that as well as the NV, DVS or NVS - depending on whether you want a lower or higher launching shaft. Voodoo is similar to the vs-proto - maybe just a touch firmer. Trinity is nice if you like something a little softer or "smoother". UST PF v2 is another good option (very similar to the vs-proto) and so is the Grafalloy Prolaunch Red (low) and Blue (mid). Never tried them myself but the AXE graphite shafts are priced well and generally get good reviews.

That's the one. May not be the lowest of the low but will definitely the launch and spin down. Aldila NV will be another one to try. And the one I play is a Grafalloy prolaunch red which is also a great shaft. Some people don't like the way the pro launch red feels though as it is pretty boardy, but definitely works. You may want to go a flex softer though as they play pretty stiff. Also, the Proforce V2 is another great shaft at a cheap price. Been around for years and is still one of my favorites. The 76 gram one is great and I'm 100% certain it will bring your launch and spin down.

You could look for a UST Proforce Axis shaft or a Grafalloy pro-launch red. The red is a great shaft with a lot of the same specs as $150 shafts just a bit older technology.

Find a SLDR TP shaft - Speeder TS 7.3 or 6.3. I swing a hair over 100 and the stock stiff felt a bit too stout for me. They play a bit long too so you can tip it a hair if you need, and they shouldn't be too expensive. That or a Black Tie, maybe.

AXE Tour shafts are solid. UST makes a bunch if great cheaper shafts too. The V2 for example. You can't go wrong with these.

I've got the same swing speed as you and really loved the Kai'li driver shaft. Just make sure it's the aftermarket shaft and not the 'made for' version. The real deal shaft has x5ct written on the shaft. Also the weights are a little lighter than the number on the shaft compared to other shafts. Kai'li 70s = 68grams

The sub $100 shaft that's working out great for me right now is the Aldila Tour Green. Nice and smooth, mid launch, and very consistent and best of all I'm hitting it long again. A year or two ago they were hot shafts, now that the Rogue has taken up everybody's attention these can be had affordably. I got mine, a Tour Stiff, for like $80.

I got a matrix red tie from global golf for $30(ebay) and it looks new to. Granted its from the cobra bio cell+ line its still a great shaft.

Got to put in the Graffaloy Prototype (the Bubba shaft). Interesting feel with the steel tip and comes in a lot of colors. Should be great to drop your spin!

Good luck

It's a weird shaft - I hate the feel but love the dispersion and distance from it.

eBay you should be able to find something under $50. Like Purple Ice, NV, VS Proto.

Of the shafts you have there I'd say Kai'Li, VooDoo or Trinity. VooDoo is the VS Proto with a core that firms it up a bit. The Trinity build upon the VooDoo and adds the RIP tip section so it firms up even more, but they sotened up the middle a bit more than I liked. Kai'Li is a newer Blueboard. It's comparable to the VS Proto IMO. All are good mid-mid launch-spin. Maybe the green Aldila's / NV profiles are a touch lower spin/launch.

Strike the Matrix Radix from your list.

I'd also suggest you check out the left over TaylorMade TP shafts that are almost always under $100 and you can get a ton of different stuff if you are willing to look at those graphics.

Try the Black Tie or the Grafalloy New Blue (if it suits you). The Black Tie is a great shaft if you want to lower your spin/launch and want a nice feel. Both shafts are available in different weights as well.

The Grafalloy BiMatrx (Bubba shaft) is one you can skip. Definitely not low/low. The Aldila Protopype was low/low, or so they say. Bubba doesn't play one.

One shaft that has been mentioned above is the Tour Green. I picked up a X2Hot Pro 5w on Amazon a few months ago and I could only get it with an R Tour Green. It was cheap though and I always replace shafts anyway. I was really surprised at the Tour Green. Even in an R I got a good flight out of it. I ended up putting a heavy Motore shaft in it because my ego couldn't handle a light R! The profile of the shaft is really good though and since Callaway was using it as a stock shaft it should be easy for you to find a pull.

Good Luck!

^^^^ What he said. The Grafalloy Blue (not Prolaunch Blue) is probably the lowest launch and spin shaft I have found......and it's cheap! It has beat out every high end shaft I have tried, and I have tried a LOT! The only down side of it is that it doesn't feel the greatest.

Ust Attas Element MK or aka: Element Earth. Smooth but stout with very tight dispersion. You will not be disappointed.

Picked up and Earth 7F4 and Fire 6F4 from a good seller on eVay, $35 each with free shipping at end of auction. Seemed like great deals to me for quality shafts. UST makes some really good stuff!
