  • It’s a Golf Digest Top 100 Course, but Calusa Pines in Naples is an absolute stunner. I am playing Seminole around the first of 2018, but I have a hard time imagining Seminole will beat out Calusa Pines for Florida’s best.

People talk about Crosswater all the time and they have amazing deals to play in spring and fall, and given how quickly they sell out, people know about Crosswater.

People also know about Tetherow, but not for good reasons. The course has the reputation as a terrible track that no one wants to play. Not sure if they ever recovered from the negative press the course got after it opened. No one I know will be playing there again.

Very different courses. "Better" in this case is 100% personal preference.

WRT Calusa, it feels like Florida has a decent handful of these small, outstanding clubs that almost nobody has heard of - Hideout, Hole in the Wall, Old Memorial, etc. Any of which I'd be pretty happy to call home in January/February/March.

Just looking to find a few gems, that you would put ahead of almost all of the big name courses. I travel quite a bit so I will go out of my way to find courses.

I will start, both of these courses I would put top 5 of any I have ever played. With the exception of Texsport I've barely heard of either of these.

1.) Steelwood CC, Loxley AL - Pretty private enclave but have never been treated better by the golf staff and course is absolutely ridiculous! I never want to leave.

2.) Giants Ridge (Quarry), Biwabik, MN (**** near Canada) - this place is a smoke show with so many stupid views and tee shots. Again, On a nice day I would pretty much play here over anywhere.

Giants Ridge (Quarry) is shockingly underrated. Probably the best turf conditions I've ever seen.

Both Giants Ridge courses have bent grass tees, fairways and greens, on a pure glacial sand base.

Blue grass rough - they originally had fescue rough but it didn't grow well in Northern Minnesota. Traces of fescue still remain on some hills scattered around the course.

    Great thread!

One very fun experience in Northeast Florida is the nine hole course at White Oak Conservation in Yulee, FL. There are two different sets of tees, so the course plays like two different nines.

It's always in great shape and lunch is included.

Locally to New England I’ll throw out Connecticut National. It’s in the middle of fricking nowhere so I see why no one has heard of it but IMO it’s much better than all the top rated NE public course. Heck i’d put ahead of a great many private courses.

Larimore Municipal Golf Course Larimore North Dakota (only 9 holes but the craziest elevation changes and you'll hit every club in your bag)

Blueberry Pines in Menahga Minnesota, one of the best conditioned I have ever played.

Chaska Town Course Chaska Minnesota. Doesn't get as much attention as Hazeltine is literally right down the road, but in my opinion it's just as good if not better.

Sand Creek Station in Hutchison Kansas is underrated in my opinion.

    North Creek in Southaven Mississippi

I agree with your choices - but Sand Creek Station is in Newton, KS - not Hutchinson. It is a great course, with all four Par 5s playing over 600 yrds - with #10 being the longest in KS @ 640 yards. Course is always in great shape and very playable, IF you play from the right Tee boxes. $25 with cart @ twilight - best value in the Midwest.

In Colorado...all doable from DIA. All public access.

    Bear Dance

    Saddleback

    Riverdale Dunes

Played Bear Dance in August on a guys trip... that is a really good golf course. Some cool holes, a lot of memorable holes, and it's a pretty golf course as well. Huge fan of that place.

Have played Bear Dance a couple of times. A little out of the way in Larkspur, CO but the course and the views more than make up for the driving. Great choice.

I am surprised no one mentioned FarmLinks GC in Sylicauga, AL. It is not part of the RTJ Trail, but only about 45 minutes from the Judge, Senator + Legislator Courses. Fantastic track, one fee all you can play and eat and the staff is great.

FarmLinks started off as a way to promote the Company's fertilizer business, so you can only imagine the course conditioning. Played there about a half dozen times and it never fails to impress me over and over again. Definitely worth the trip.
