Primland in Virginia

Our band is playing the New Year’s Eve Gala at Primland. If we were playing there in warm weather, I’d be angling to get on the course. Friends have played and given it good reviews.

Spring Creek, 20 minutes east of Charlottesville, is one of my favorites, and easily eclipses the other Charlottesville courses, which are pretty much all very stuffy except the muni I play regularly.

I live 20 miles from Primland. It isn't even the best course in the area in my opinion. Next time you're in the area, check out Olde Mill, High Meadows, Cross Creek and The River Course.

Cross Creek is as quality a golf course as I have played, especially since the Kris Spence redesign about 10 years ago. It's also located in Mount Airy, North Carolina a.k.a. "Mayberry" so, you'll find some interesting things to do around town.

Primland is better than all of those in my opinion. However Olde Mill is a hidden gem that not too many know about. Cross Creek is nice, but is not in the same league with Primland. In the state of Virginia Primland is a top 5 course, as a resort course it is right up there with the Cascades at the Homestead, and better than Kingsmill.

My firm did most of the design work in and around Primland. I know where the bodies are buried so to speak. To each his own!

I live only a few miles west of Olde Mill. Great layout, poor management.

One of my favorite, and never mentioned, courses is Deacon's Lodge at Breezy Point MN.

Arnold Palmer designed it as a tribute to his father.

It is built on a 600 acre preserve and once you leave the 1st tee there is nothing but nature for 18 holes.

Living in the Chicagoland, I think the most underrated course is easily Flossmor CC. Whenever they have tournaments the course always holds its own, the greens are lightning fast, and has so much character! Find me a more underrated course in the Chi!

Agree about Flossmoor CC! Loved playing that course the few times I've been out there. I'd like to throw Mount Prospect Golf Club into the ring for "most underrated in Chicago". For $23 walking, you get a principal's nose, a bottle, redan, cape, double plateau, short, punchbowl, eden, narrows, biarritz, road, and an alps (which is pretty sweet btw). Granted, the conditions could be a bit better, but its a Golden Age architectural exercise that you don't get much of anymore. I agree that Flossmore may be the more underrated course as far as actual course shot value/enjoyment, but the bang for your dollar for us McRaynor guys like yourself (noticed the SA avatar, I've had the pleasure of walking it ~150 times a year for the past few years) shouldn't go unacknowledged.

Agree on mt prospect! Great fun. Would love to play Flossmor

In private category north of Chicago in Highland Park---Exmoor CC. Gets lost a bit among Chicago's best, but is right there Great Ross course, restored.

Will be better known after host to Sr Players Champ in July

Agreed. Some of the best greens in Chicago are at Flossmor.

I caddied for the head pro from there last fall, I'm hoping to play it this year! Never been on property. Old Elm was pretty legit when I saw it for the first time last year, and I still think Skokie is wildly unrecognized for how good it is

The Harvester in Iowa. Underrated even as a top 50 public course. Middle of nowhere, but it is awesome.

Sad news... Harvester closed for the year and opening back up as a private club :( Have to say I am very happy to have played there.

This is tragic. Surely they will have on site lodging to allow the plebes to continue to enjoy if. They are also updating the course too. I’m very grateful to have had about 20 rounds on The Harvester.

Elkhorn Valley in Elkhorn OR.

Place is a marvel the founder literally designed and built the course by himself by hand. Took over 30 years to build 16 holes and then he unfortunately passed away. His son did the last 2 and unfortunately he did not have the talent of his father but the first 16 holes are just amazing through some incredible natural land features. Thick woods on either side of the fairway makes it a little tough in fact their course motto is "Do you have enough balls to play Elkhorn Valley?" which might sound like a taunt but it's really a question. No seriously did you bring enough balls with you?

Great place to play, cheap green fee definitely worth a visit.

Gold Canyon Golf Resort / Dinosaur Mountain GC

Great pick! We always talk about TPC Scottsdale, WeKoPa (one of the best in AZ), Troon, etc but GC/Dinosaur is truly a hidden gem. Pain to get to from the airport (about 45 min drive), but the scenery, condition and golf holes are spectacular.

My set-up:
Bag - Flex Tech Crossover
Driver - Ping G430 MAX with HZRDUS Black Smoke

3 Wood - Ping G430

Hybrid - Rocketballz 3 Hybrid

Wedges - Ping Glide 4  50* / 54* / 58*
Putter - Bettinardi Queen Bee #6
Shoes - Ecco Hybrid
Ball - Maxfli Tour X
