Golf Stat Tracking

How do you track your stats on the course to find the areas you need to work on to improve your scores? It’s easy to just go out there and play a round and wish you could have done better. But with data on what you did right and wrong it’s definitely possible to then go work on the lacking parts of your game. Any one have good luck with any particular app that gives real feedback on this?

I enjoy SwingxSwing as it provides information regarding putts, GIR, scrambling, driver misses and sand saves.

It is definitely not as detailed as it could be but it does give you a starting point for stat tracking.

Outside of that I personally track “lost balls”, and whether it’s off the tee or with a driver. For me those are some of the easiest mistakes to bring up.

Some other apps provide detailed feedback regarding strokes gained but require more detailed information(specific iron selected etc). For me that takes me out of my round and is too much to track while focusing on my game.

Depends entirely on how far into this you want to go and how much you are willing to spend.

If you want the super cheap version, use pencil and paper with some sort of online round tracker to keep fairways, GIR, putting stats, up and downs, and so on.

If you want to really get into it, get Arrcos 360; it'll give you all the data you can imagine, and then some, in the most digestible and useful form I've seen.

I keep track of GIRs, fairways, and putts. I have found these stats to be somewhat useless. GIRs are pretty good, but the other two are pointless. Something like Arccos 360 would solve the stats problem because it provides more complex statistics that are more meaningful. However, Arccos 360 only seems to work well under IOS and I am not an Apple fan.

Until A360 works well under Android I am going to try tracking eGIRs (effective GIRs - balls in the fringe or close to the green with very high probability of an upNdown) and LaGs (Looks at Green - created by an esteemed WRXer; tee shot which provides a clear shot to the green or layup on a par 5) in addition to fairways and greens. I will still record putts out of habit and continue to complain about their uselessness as a metric. Sigh...

I've been using Golfshot Plus since 2014. Its excellent!! Easy to use...also gives GPS yardage and hole fly overs. Will also track club distances, if you want.

I use just the stat tracking on the Garmin S6 watch. After each hole as I enter my score, it asks me how many putts I had, and I can select from straight/left/right for the tee shot. From these, it enables recording of fairways hit, GIR, number of putts.

The info from this off 1 round is probably next to useless. I have over 100 rounds recorded...it is now I am able to see the area's I need to improve the most.

I've tested quite a few and believe they all provide usefull statistics, but it is a matter of the presentation that sets them apart.

three specific presentations that I like:

  • Taylormade myRoundPro => Graphic depiction of drives (relative to the fairway), approach shots, and short game shots (relative to the pin).
  • The Grint => Trends, without having to apply a filter.
  • Golfpad GPS =Graphic depiction of drives and approached for individual courses and hole.

I currently use Golfpad GPS for on-course GPS and shot tracking, and input to The Grint after the round.

I'm not posting screen shots due to the fact that it is a "pain in the Word not allowed"

Just say'in...

I use GolfShot. It provides GPS for the course as well as an aerial view. Comes in handy for courses you have never played. Gives distances to bunkers, water hazards, front, center and back of green.

The app records your score of course plus fairways(missed left/right or hit fairway), GIR, sand shots(and saves), putts, putts per GIR, penalty strokes, etc. All of this gets uploaded to their site where you can view it anytime. You can then look at your stats like I mentioned above but the site also shows birdie/par/bogie/double bogey percentage. You can post rounds to GHIN from the app as well.

I've been using the Hole19 app this year and found it to be pretty helpful and detailed enough to know where I need to improve. Can track overall score for a number of courses (there hasn't been a course I've played that didn't have the map charted), FIR (also miss left right and short), GIR, putts, scrambling %, sand saves, penalties. There is a premium version that I'm considering that will track more detailed stats but the free version is definitely worth giving a try to see if you get what you need.

MS Excel

I record basic information including the date, the names of my playing partners, whether or not I had a warm-up as well as essential statistical info like fairways hit, the number of greens hit, total putts, and my score (relative to par) for each hole.

Since I play the same course most of the time, I can use that historical data to monitor how I’m doing over time even down to the level of an individual hole.

This is all I really need.

The next level would be trying to analyze how I’m doing with various types of clubs but I imagine it would be a pretty big hassle to try and record the distance(s) of every shot particularly when so many are affected by the lie. I’m not sure I would have enough (recent) data to make meaningful predictions anyway.

I just started using Shotscope V2 a few rounds ago, so it'll be a few more rounds before I have enough data to see patterns. So far, I've enjoyed the data it has collected.
