My Epic crown cracked! :(

I was practicing at the range today and noticed that my driver was feeling rather muted/hollow (even for the Epic SZ), well finally one hit and it felt like the clubhead exploded and a large round crack appeared on my crown.

Now I love the epic SZ but this is the second time something has happened to this driver. Previously a screw broke.

Guess this gives me an excuse to ho another driver. :D

Now that's a CRACK! They will replace that in a second.

Yep Callaway's support is great. I left my stock shaft down in my home in FL as I am in the process of moving. So in the meantime I may try another driver until I can replace this one.

You don't need your stock shaft to send your cracked one back. One you get the new one, take off the head and put the cracked one on the shaft they sent with the new head. Then send back. I had to do this twice last year.

It might be different in the USA but in Australia we can just send the head back if there is a warranty claim.

It saves on freight costs, it seems crazy to send an adjustable head club back including the shaft when the shaft is just fine!

Come one man, this is America. That is way too simple.

That was a complete separation of the seam line all the way around. You must have hit more golf balls after the first sign of structure failure.

I guess the OEM priced these new drivers higher because they calculated the higher failure rate into the basis of total cost.Anyone else besides the Taylormade and Callaway ? Any like failure on Cobra heads ? Other brands ?

I just had to chime in to congratulate the OP and everyone else so far on not jumping on the "this should never happen -- this brand is junk" bandwagon. These things do happen, and most of these companies seem more than willing to make things right. I hope your replacement experience goes smoothly.

Oh -- and congratulations on your Herculean smash factor!

Could not agree with you more! The hunt for faster clubhead and ball speeds is always going to come at a price for some. All companies can do is improve year to year. Callaway has certainly fixed some issues that came with the epic with the rogue.

Cobra had issues with F6 and f7 heads. They were always willing to rectify any issue very promptly.

Well Callaway is out of epics anyway so say hello to Rogue.

Is this really true? Don't get my hopes up!

As far as dumping on the brand: I have always been happy with my products from Callaway. The X-forged irons are probably the best irons I have ever played. I am loyal to brands who are lefty friendly, and callaway is one of them. I have had the original Xhot, Big bertha alpha 815, and epic sub zero. The epic is the first driver I have had multiple issues with. It was already replaced once by callaways customer service for a broken screw. Hopefully whatever they send me has no issues.

If they indeed replace my epic with a rogue, I will sell my soul to Callaway.

Callaway will replace it with a rogue. Take it to a authorized dealer and have them do it for you. I cracked mine about a month ago ( not nearly as bad as yours) and it was replaced in a week with a brand new rogue.

Sure enough, spoke to a rep and they are replacing it with the Rogue. They are sending a miscellaneous shaft that I just switch off the heads.

All I can say is that callaway owns my soul now. :D

Be glad you didnt crack a Yonex. I cracked a brand new E Zone Yonex driver within 100 ball strikes at the range. After returning, they claimed it was accidental damage and refused warranty. They offered that I buy a new head, AND they would not warranty the new head.

They sent me a replacement, and looks like the miscellaneous shaft they sent is a damn good one, which at least on paper fits my swing perfectly. Now I am kicking myself for leaving the stock shaft at my FL home. As a result, I am having a relative of mine ship the stock Epic shaft to me so I can send it back with that.

Callaway is beyond awesome.

In gaming the Epic, if I cracked mine and they replaced it with a Rogue I’d be disappointed.. The Rogue was a turd for me. Also I view the Epic as a higher tier club given the higher level of adjustability. Some days I hit mine better with sliding weight in the toe. Other days straight back. With the Rogue I’d be out to lunch.

also what if you paid good money to be fitted into the Epic. Now that fitting money is out the door. Well unless you go through the hassle of selling the Rogue and finding a new or used epic online.

How can Cally be out of heads? Their CPO store has ‘like new’ Epics which usually are in the wrapper still.

I noticed what looks, feels like a crack with mine . I bought mine April 2017. Still have receipt . Think they'll replace?

I can’t tell from the photo for sure but if it is a legitimate crack then I would find it highly likely Callaway would honour a warranty claim on it for you.

I’m not an employee or agent for Callaway so I can’t speak for them but I do work at a Callaway account and they are great to deal with!

Easiest thing to do is reach out to them and see if they will assess this for you.

called Callaway about an hour ago . Said they were sorry to hear about the crack. Said "unfortunately we don't have any epics so we will have to send you a rogue" . Will arrive in 5 to 7 business days. Simple , pain free.

I played the Rogue SZ for the first time today and I had the opposite experience. It blows the Epic SZ out of the water and it's not even close. Much better feel and sound. Plus I can't believe I am saying this but it is significantly longer than my Epic. It may very well be the Project X hazardus shaft but it was just amazing.

Different strokes for different folks.
