Langert Golf

Recommended Posts

I vaguely remember Langert Golf from the days when I started playing golf (circa 1988), and for fun I picked up a set of Langert Transition irons. It was an interesting concept: forged musclebacks from the 7 iron down, and investment-cast heads from the 6 iron up. When I got them I loved them and hated them: I hated the cast heads because they had way too much offset, and the heads felt so hollow and cheap at impact; the forged heads are heavenly, with satin chrome, thin toplines, no offset, and at impact they feel so good I would have to put them up there with some of the best forgings I have ever struck. They feel much like the MacGregor Muirfield Tour Forged irons, and irons of that class. If anyone is curious, go pick up a set of Transitions and go swing the forged heads and feel for yourself.

I chucked the longer clubs and replaced them with Hogan Apex Plus irons, 2-6 irons, which were a nightmare to reshaft: the original Langert irons had .370" tips, which I found out too late, the 2-6 Apex Plus irons were graphite and I had to pull those heads and reshafted them with S300's with the correct tip (.335" tapered). So now I have finally a much better set of irons and the only negative is that the 2 iron on the Apex Plus has more offset than I can tolerate, but I think I can get used to it. To add to this story, I found the matching sand wedge for $10 including shipping! The sand wedge is excellent, with the right amount of bounce and also feels very solid.

A Google search of the company revealed that Eddie Langert, a former pro from Minnesota, used to work with Gary Adams in the early days of Taylor Made, and he broke off and started his own company. Sadly, Langert Golf was undercapitalized and they went belly-up and Prince bought them out. Don't know what happened to them since, but apparently they are no longer around.

Anyone else here owned a set of Langerts?

I had Langert driver with a boron shaft. Shaft was gold and the finish peeled which I could care less about. I think maybe the shaft was an HM-40. It was my first metal driver coming from a Powerbilt Citation Persimmon. I absolutely loved that Langert! Cracked me up cause I distinctly remember on the sole it said the loft was 8.75 which just killed me. I believe the face had groove lines but also a circular deal in the 'sweet spot'. I honestly forget what happened to that club. Wish I still had it just for memory sake.

One of the very first TaylorMade iron sets was called the EL-1, and I believe was named for Eddie Langert. I don't know if he designed it or not. It was a cast stainless blade with chrome plating and was very nice as I recall.

Wow that is a name I have not heard in a long time. Growing up I worked in a shop where my boss had a habit of investing in brands he thought would be the next big thing right before they went bankrupt, got bought out or went under. We had brands like Cubic Balance and Zevo instead of Titleist or Taylor Made. He was a hall of fame teaching pro, but his eye for equipment was not good. Langert fell into that group. He thought people would love the Foiler because of the Ginty and Baffler, but he couldn't give them away. By the time I left (2002-ish) they still had unused Foilers and sets of Tour de Forces that they were giving away as caddie prizes at the end of the year long after the company was gone.

The only club of theirs I remember playing was the "Fat Eddie" which I want to say was their 2nd or 3rd driver, slightly bigger meant to compete with the Big Bertha that had just become popular a few years before. It was okay, but I have distinct recollection that the finish wasn't any good.

A quick update on my Langert set.  I did not like the Hogan Apex Plus irons (2-6) because of the horrid offset on the 2 and 3 irons, so I sold them off and now I bought some Wilson Staff RM Tour irons (2-6) to replace them.  The irons have no offset, and now I am happy with this partial Langert set.  They're great clubs.
