Dustin Johnson pre tourney press conference

So I just tried to watch Dustin's press conference. Being a South Carolina boy I really want to like him, and sure as hell admire his game. Is it just me or is this guy on sedatives or anything else that would slow the brain down? His answers are ALWAYS canned, with no sense of humor to be found. The best term I can find to describe him is vacuous. Sorry if I sound like a hater, but good Lord show a little enthusiasm DJ! It's not that bad of a gig....

Butch Harmon, his instructor, at a conference said "Justin couldn't spell "OX" if you spotted him the "O."

The way he described Justin was as a cool, laidback "Dude, I had an eagle to win the Open. No way I was going to..." and I can't remember the last part but it dealt with going for it. He said Justin has no fear and nothing really phases him.

If you want to see Harmon unhinged, go to youtube and search Butch Harmon Met PGA Conference 2016.

Duuudee, who's Justin?

I know a few guys that talk like Dustin. It's just how they are. Don't see the hate.

Except that even Butch Harmon, his coach, says he isn't too bright. Look I am not saying you can't like a guy like that, nor am I saying I root for people just because they are smart. Just making an observation. I mean there is some china missing from this guys cabinet.

Many of his issues come from mediocre putting. How is that tied to intelligence?

Mickelson can easily have a few more majors. Is he "dumb"? According to most people on here, Phil is smarter than most. Rory has struggled with putting. Is he stupid? Speith dumped two in the water at the Masters and lost. Is that lack of intelligence?

Maybe, just maybe, golf is a very difficult sport and hitting poor shots, or missing key putts is part of the game.

I agree that intelligence cant be judged by performance on the golf course. Im sure thereare high court judges who have playex their entire lives without ever breaking 90. DJ, however, leaves plenty of other clues that indicate a lack of clear thought process at the very least, if not straight out lack of intelligence.

Exactly. And be honest — which one of us keyboard warriors wouldn't trade a few dozen IQ points for his swing, bank account, and personal life?

Bein' smart sure don't make ya happy. More often than not it's the opposite.

I didn't watch, but pro athletes get asked the same questions 100+ times over ever year, i understand it can get a little repetitive. Especially if you are being asked about past failures or not having won the big one yet, not sure what the interview was about

Remember this is a job to these guys, they get paid a lot but once you get paid that much you get used to it and it stops being a novelty. Someone who makes 50K a year looks at someone making 200K a year and says "if i made that i'd be happy"...but it's not always true. Many of these guys end up making 200K and aren't happy. It's the same concept.

I can understand press conferences would be very tedious. Many of the questions are generic and boring

I doubt that it's much fun to do press conferences every week. But, it's part of the job and part of life for these guys. I'd make the best of it and joke around with the press.

Tim Rosaforte: Dustin, you're strokes gained inside 150 yds has...

DJ: Tim, has anybody told you how much you look like Jessica Alba?

TR: Uh.... no....

DJ: Well, I'm not going to be the first.

Reporter: You've been struggling lately with the putter...

DJ: Yeah, I don't get it. I've watched just about every putting video there is on YouTube.

Reporter: What was going through your mind after missing the green long on 17?

DJ: I was thinking about how much Hideki's game has improved this year... because I know somebody will ask.

Got it!

Something in use

Something that can be used - higher form of tool

Something that is pretty useless - lowest form of tool

Wish picking a shaft for my golf clubs was this easy...

I think you missed my point. It was not anything directed at answering tough questions. They could ask him what color the sky is, and his response would most likely be "I'm not sure, but my game feels pretty good and I need to take it one hole at a time." My point was this is why I have a tough time pulling for him.

Why not applaud him for staying focused on the task at hand? Instead, while you're creating threads to complain about his IQ (among the many here), DJ's tied for the lead at the U.S. Open with a chance to win $1.5 Million over the next few days. Seems like he knows what he's doing.

The triumph of the uncluttered mind.

And that's a great attribute in golf.

Dustin may not seem like a smart guy, but he has an unbelievable golf game, a smoking hot wife, millions In the bank, gets to do what he loves for a living, and came back from scandal even stronger, etc...

Sounds pretty smart to me.

I know a guy who has a higher IQ than Einstein, and he's wasted his life in a dead-end job working for the government for $80,000/year. He hates his job and his life, but he's smart as hell.

In all honesty I hope Dustin is pissed at the media for asking such stupid questions and making such backhanded comments. Hopefully he is playing with a chip on his shoulder for an extra little bit of motivation. I also think it would be hilarious and outstanding if he keeps putting on this ball striking display. He can 2 putt all the 10 foot birdie putts he has for the rest of the week as far as I'm concerned. Eventually he is going to hit one to 2 feet and still make birdies somehow. Id like to see him win with all credit going to his ball striking and zero towards putting. The media and probably the USGA would go bananas if a guy wins the US Open after missing 26 ten foot birdie putts
