What Are You "OCD" About?

Sean2

Recommended Posts

Cleanliness of my clubs and golf ball. Each shot I clean my clubs and when I get home I clean them some more. My golf ball every time I reach the green I clean it, I cannot putt with a dirty ball. Head cover on woods and putter must always be on when the club gets back to the bag.

The way my clubs are arranged. The way my bag is set on my cart.

My shoes, must always be clean before and after the round. Push cart too.

Ball marks, my own and others who don't repair theirs.

My alignment on my ball when putting, using the alignment aid. My alignment every shot.

It's hard to imagine with all these things, I can still play faster than most of my golf buddies. I guess I got used to the routine.

I have a buddy who has the same quirks and we blend very well. Sadly out of all the people I play with, he is the only closest person who has does these things similar to what I do.

Head covers. Gotta be original, which can be tough when you buy used clubs. Bought an old school Callaway warbird strong 3 from global last year for $9.99. Then paid $10 more for an original plush head cover on eBay. Still a hell of a stick for $20. Not so great off the deck, but friggin' supreme off the tee. I can put it mid-way up the net at 200 yards on the range, with range balls. But it's gotta look right in the bag.

Sad, I know.

- Placing the rake inside of the bunker when I am done. Cannot stand them being outside of the bunker. Also, properly raking bunkers.

- Fixing pitch marks correctly. I think it's trashy when groups don't fix their marks.

- Making sure I mark the ball with the correct marker. I carry 2 with me at all times. One that I use when I am putting for birdie or better, and one when I am putting for par or worse.

- Having snacks in my golf bag. I hate paying the exuberant amount for crackers at the course.

- Having a full water bottle. The Arizona sun can literally kill you....as it does to several people a year.

Surprisingly I am not OCD at all about the cleanliness of my clubs. I want to be, but I just get kind of lazy about them. Which reminds me, I should probably give my grips a good scrub down soon.....if I remember.

I get this! Heck, I've decided not to play a club I really liked all because the head cover ripped... I've found that a head cover from my alma mater works. Phew!

You people are nuts lol. Just play golf and enjoy yourself. I play with a buddy regularly who has no idea what hot melt or lie and loft adjustments are, doesn't know about swing weight or care what grips he has. Hell, half his ferrules are loose and separated 1/4 inch from the hosel. Still goes out and shoots mid 60's.

Of course we are nuts...that's why DSM-V has a classification for it. :-)

Few things I can be OCD about (golf anyways),

  • "Stomp" behind where my ball is T'd up on every Tee, not sure why I do, I think about 20 years ago I always saw David Duval do it, and started doing it, recently people have been asking me about it.
  • Where things are in my pockets - no phone or wallet in my pockets, they have to be put in my bag
  • Foam rolling and a few specific stretched before playing, can't go without it.
  • Playing with the same golf ball until I lose it (less strict about this 1), my last round in July I finally lost a Pro-V that had been in my bag at least all through last year.
  • Edit/forgot to mention - playing from the "championship"/"Blue" Tee's at any course (maybe it's because I'm used to playing short courses up in the north east), but I want to play long and really challenging courses, along those same lines - I hate/despise playing courses that are really narrow and set up "tree line to tree line" fairways

I've recently started doing this and I think the reason we do it is because sometimes the tee boxes can be a little more shaggy than we'd like, so by stomping down the grass it gives less interaction with the club. That's at least the reason I do it.

Clubs get a bath after every round and practice session, even if not hit. Shoes cleaned after every round and dried. Clubs go in backseat and have a towel as a pillow, and are secured so they don't roll. Used to have a towel through the middle of the bag to limit club chatter on cart but can't do it anymore with new bag. Pretty much just really take care of my equipment, and get made fun of it a lot by my friends. However, my clubs (4 years old) almost look brand new...

I figure if you take good care of them, they will take good care of you :)

Bunker rakes go 'outside' the bunker. Never in the bunker. Handle faces tee box. Nothing worse than ball trapped under lip of bunker with no stance because a rake was left there.

I fix so many ball marks they should pay me to play. Especially the ones on my line close to the ball and around the cup. Hate striking a perfect putt to have it hit a bump and veer offline. I probably annoy people taking too much time on the greens, but what is the point rushing only to wait on the next hole?

I use an old quarter for ball marker. Eagle side is up if putting for eagle or birdie. I'll use a dime if close to the hole in order to be less in the way of other players. Hate when people use fat markers like poker chips or thick metal markers that are like bricks if your ball hits them. May have to stop using dimes since people don't see them and stomp on my line.

Yea, I hate being rushed when on the green. Especially if I hit closest to the pin but can't survey my line because waiting for others to chip up or putt and don't want to step on their lines.

Still obsessed about losing tournament a few days ago by one stroke with double bogey on last hole. Only penalty in 36 holes. Bogey would have won. Of course there were dozens of other shots that could have been better....obsess over those too...lip out putt on #1 for example...not healthy I know, but maybe makes me better next time.

Mine are:

Making it to the range before my round. I can't stand going to the first tee cold.

Cleaning my clubs during the round. I don't worry about cleaning them after the round but I do wipe them down during the round.

On a par 4 or par 5, I have to make sure the model name of the golf ball is lined up parallel with the fairway. On a par 3, it has to be perpendicular to the green.

I use a quarter to mark my ball. It doesn't have to be the same quarter but it can't be a penny, nickel, dime, poker chip, etc.

Making sure my speaker is charged before the round. Got to have my music on the course.

The liquor has to be Captain and the beer has to be Natty light.

I play courses that remind you to place rakes back IN the bunker when you're done.

----------------------------------------'

Guess is doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things...but think of this...if someone flings the rake into a bunker it leaves a dent there. Next person picks up the rake and the following person hits into the rake dent in the bunker. Just as bad as being in a footprint. So think about it. I'm OCD so I can't let this go. (Just kidding)

I am a "put the rakes back in the bunkers" guy, because a course I worked at was adamant about this. It was explained to me (and it makes sense in my mind) that if the rake is out of the bunker, it can deflect a players ball into a bunker thus leaving a potentially worse shot. If it's in the bunker, and ball ball hits it, it can potentially deflect it out of the bunker, leaving a potential better shot.

I always place the rakes back in the bunker either parallel to the fairway or green at the lowest part and closest to an entrance. But I agree that far too many times people just chuck the rake back in and don't care what happens to the bunker.

No broken tees in my field of vision on a teebox. If I setup and see a used tee, I have to move it.

Oh yea. Forgot to mention that too. I don't like any used tees near my feet or field of vision. I'll pocket them if useable or throw them to the side of the marker.

I also don't like the broken tees in my swing path line, or through-swing!

True, a ball could be deflected into the bunker, or it could prevent the ball from going into the bunker. Worse would be if the rake prevented the ball from rolling to the bottom of the bunker and the player was stuck with a downhill lie. I noticed they keep the rakes outside at the Olympics. That's how they did it at a course I used to work that also hosted a few pro tournaments.

The public course I play has horrible bunkers. They are usually filled with water and we play no penalty to move the ball out of a footprint. I'll rake the bunker when I leave footprints but a lot of times there is no point.

I have to immediately take any stickers off my shafts after purchasing and rub down with Goo Gone. Drives me nuts and many of my buddies leave their stickers and price stickers on the club forever, doesn't bother them at all.

This drives me nuts, too. First thing I do is clean that stuff off a new club.

I try not to overthink too many things, but I'm weird about certain stuff. Like in my bag I keep one ball, two short tees, and one long plastic tee in the top little pouch. I know exactly how many balls are in the main pouch, and they are marked all the same. Any balls I find on the course go into a separate back pocket, for the kids or the shag bag.

All of my clubs have to be in order in the bag.

I start every warmup session on the range with the same club.

I bring my bag into the house and clean my clubs before most rounds.

I take one full power practice swing with my driver before every tee shot. I can't quit this one. It's the only club I do it with. My connection with this ritual is so strong I fear that the first time I don't do it, Satan himself will ascend from beneath the tee box and rip my head clean off, returning to Hell with my soul.

I also remove 4 ounces from a 20oz Gatorade G2, pour exactly 3 ounces of vodka back into it, and put it into the freezer the day before I play. It melts slowly and is still nice and cold for the back 9. (and I spend enough on the course otherwise, believe me, so I feel zero guilt about this)

I will use a certain ball until my game goes to hell around the same time I'm running out of that ball. I broke 80 twice this year with a Srixon Q Star, so I'm stuck.

I never line up a putt with the line on a golf ball. I will place the plainest part of the ball up. I can never get my mind to accept that I have it lined up perfectly. I always end up over the ball thinking ok it's aiming ever so slightly right of target so I better compensate... and pfft.

Oh yeah, I always step behind the ball on a tee shot too.

This one I've never told anyone - I'm almost 100% at flipping tees to land a certain way. My buddy almost always has to tee off first on #1.
