What Are You "OCD" About?

Sean2

Recommended Posts

-moving tees, dirt clumps, leaves, out of my view while hitting

-pulling my glove down before each shot

-fixing ball marks

-raking bunker/leaving rake in bunker

Last round my ball was at the bottom of a DEEP footprint in the bunker. You know what happened next...I chunked it out and left it 30 feet short of the pin. I was so pissed. I wanted to pick my ball up, rake the bunker, and put it back down. A conversation ensued about all the crap us recreational golfers have to deal with during a round that pros don't. Raked bunkers, ball marks in their way, lost balls in places they shouldn't be lost, slanted tee boxes. The list goes on. Such is life.

It started with just tee shots but now happens with every shot. When I line up I stand 6-8' behind the ball, find a target and put the ball in the line between me and the ball, walk towards address while staring at the target, look to the ball a couple steps away, take address, quick check of alignment, swing thoughts, and swing. I will talk and you can talk while I'm at address, but while I'm lining up its silence or it all starts over.

I have a newly developed "whack-a-doodle" one.

My old TM putter broke and I went to a back-up Callaway. It is an awesome putter and I absolutely love it. But, for whatever reason, the chrome on the shaft seems to shine more. And it shows finger prints - bad.

I have found that if I carry it to the green by the shaft, as many of us do, it leaves finger prints on the shaft that are so visible and annoying that at address those "marks" show up and distract me. Never had this issue with any other putter. I tried just putting finger print smudges all the way down the line and that was just more annoying.

So...

I now basically just carry it by the grip and when I do get prints on the chrome I wipe them off before I take my stance and address the ball.

Any suggestions for taking the shine away (or actually just limiting it a bit) would be appreciated for this new habit. : )

There can't be anything in my peripheral vision while putting. I will walk 30 feet to move a leaf that'd never come close to my line.

broken tees for par threes. I feel that a full tee impedes the club action.

Not overly OCD. I leave all my stickers on my clubs, rarely clean the clubs, and have no problem playing a dirty ball.

EWWwwwww playin a dirty ball is bad juju

Clubs HAVE to be in order, must use broken tees when not hitting driver, MUST mark my ball with a heads up coin, must always putt out, even if given to me, I must see ball go in hole, must wear white golf shoes with low cut blacks socks (currently FJ D.N.As which I love), must be wearing a hat, and pockets must be empty except for golf ball, coin for marking, divot repair tool, two tees, and glove. Wow a lot more than I realized :taunt:

No wallet in my back pocket. Tees in right pocket. extra ball and GPS in left pocket. Anything more or different throws off my feel.

The interesting thing about this post is what some may call OCD or being "retentive"...so much of this game is sticking w a comfortable and repeatable routine. Pre-shot, putting, practice, arrival at the course it goes on and on. And it works! Or at least we think it does when we have that "career" round that is supported by OCD routines.

For me...

Allow ample time on arriving at course...I hate to be rushed

New ball marked w a single pencil dots to the right of the #

5 long tees, 1 short, ball mark and divot tool in right pocket. Tees must be white or natural.

Clubs cleaned after every round and touched up during

Fix at least 3 ball marks every green and complain about the other who left them.

Have to "love" the clubs in the bag...I don't care if it's better, if I can't look at it, I can't play it.

That's just the normal few for me. I'm sure there are others I have but it's what comes to mind and I have always done them. 39 years or so and counting.

You raise a good point. I guess where it could become an issue is if one HAS to have things a certain way, it's an absolute must: what is in the pocket, clubs in the bag, etc. Hence the "OCD" designation. :-)

I'm 99% OCD free. People look in my car and wonder if I'm homeless, or look at my desk and wonder if we've had a break-in. But, when I ran track, I always had to have both shoes tied to the exact same pressure on my feet, my underwear had to have everything taughtly squared away, while the rest of my clothing had to be loose to the absolute. I'm the same way about my clothes playing golf. I don't understand why anyone would want to tuck their shirt in, ever, but especially to play golf (don't you feel like you're trying to escape from a duffle bag?).

I don't know if this is OCD, or some other mental illness, but clubs go in and out of my bag depending on my current swing theory which changes every five minutes. Worst, probably, is my occasional obsession with trying to prove one of my clubs doesn't fit the rest.

Left pocket : ~5 long tees to start the round (though I seem to only break/lose 1, maybe 2 in a round), Ball

Right pocket : ~2 short-medium length tees. Ball mark repairer, a dime, and a quarter or dollar coin.

On the tee : After teeing up my ball, I step down the ground behind the ball, moreso when I'm using something other than driver. I think I picked that up watching Crossfield vlogs.

Everything I take out of the bag goes back in to the same section, and I replace my head covers after every shot.

When teeing off, my ball has to be sitting on the tee where I can see "Titleist." If it's turned any other way, I might as well kiss that baby bye-bye!

I'm obsessed about not leaving/forgetting a club on the green. If I bring two clubs up to the green (wedge and putter), I make sure that I place the wedge between the hole and the cart while I putt out. That way I have to literally walk over it on the way to the cart thus never forgetting it. I have a buddy who literally leaves at least one club every round we play. Drives me nuts!

File this one under "superstition" moreso than OCD, but if I find a ProV1 or ProV1x, I won't play it because I know that within 3 strokes it's going in the water or the woods. I can go out with a half dozen Pinnacle Gold's and a I won't lose a ball. But let me find one ProV and I'll lose it faster than you can say "d'oh!"

Yes, golf is a head game as was opined earlier. :-)
