Do you really need a 3 wood still.

I'm thinking about pulling my 3-wood at add a second driver. Sounds crazy, but driving is key and that's really all I use my 3-wood for anyway. I carry 4-wood, 7-wood (laugh if you want, but it's awesome), so I can still handle long approaches. The 3-wood doesn't get much attention outside of the tee box. I would rather have two drivers -- one that's slightly shorter-shafted, more left-biased, and a little lower-lofted and second driver that's more of a standard-length, higher-flighted, power-fading bomber.

I use my 5 wood more often than my 3. But, I hit my 3 well and it does come in handy occasionally. I could go to a 12 club set-up with how little I use my 3 wood and lob wedge, but I don't have anything that I would replace them with and, when I do encounter situations where I need one or the other, I am more than glad I have them in the bag.

Personally I removed the 3 wood years ago. I find I hit my 5 wood just as far & more accurately. I've seen plenty of guys waste shots with the 3 wood. It's about the hardest club for amateurs to hit consistently off the deck. Plus those worm burners I see guys hit are just plain embarrassing.

I’ve got a few holes on my home track that require a 3w off the tee due to trees and shape of fairway. But I seldom hit it off the dirt.

I use my 3 wood all the time. Playing for position on certain hikes off the tee or going for long par 5 in 2.

Well you know with jacked lofts 3 woods these days are really just minus 1 woods... ;)

Went awhile without a 3 wood but I like to hit it off the tee on shorter par 4 where it will keep me with a full wedge into the green. Some rounds thats more times than my driver. I stopped trying to hit par 5 in two until my ball striking gets better so dont hit it off the deck very often.

I understand you are joking but ironically the opposite is true with many of the modern fairway woods.

 

They are so low-spin now you can get away with adding loft and still getting the same distance. My 16M2 HL is at 16.8 degrees and it still almost goes too far. But the added loft makes it incredibly easy to hit off the deck and I get plenty of height to allow for hitting into greens when required.

My 3 wood is so solid off the tee and so reliable off the fairway it’s the last club I’d consider dropping (G400)

Lofts are always a curious topic. I wouldn't dispute that a 3W is a good club to drop if your driver speed is less than 90 mph and you're straight off the tee.

 

I always consider a 2 iron and a 5 wood to have the same loft around 18 degrees, but that is anecdotal as it was how my first set of clubs was built.

 

I think a wise way to look at it would be simply to determine the lowest lofted club you elevate and hit the furthest off of a perfect lie in the fairway. I like playing 3 wood off the tee and wouldn't drop it, I can understand a scenario where it makes sense.
