Best 3 wood

Reality check: for many golfers, the best 3W is a 4W - slightly shorter shaft for better control, and extra loft to enhance launch.

I'm with you guys on this. Switched from a 15* CB4 Tour to a AB TP 3HL (basically a 4 Wood) and I've never hit anything longer or at a more perfect height. So much easier to hit off the deck.

I absolutely loved my 816 until this happened

What happened, use or anger? I have literally never seen any club break-in that fashion without help.

Driver: Titleist Tsi3 w/HZRDUS Smoke Yellow TX 6.0
3 Wood: Cobra King Speedzone/HZRDUS Smoke Yellow 70

5 Wood: Callaway Mavrik Subzero/Aldila Rogue White 70

Short Irons (7-P): Wilson Staff Model Blade/DG120TI

Wedges (50/54/58): Callaway Jaws MD5 w/TI S200
Putter: Original Odyssey White Hot XG No. 7

Total distance I have never hit any 3 wood longer than the Callaway XR16 but it isn’t the most accurate/consistent. All around playability, I still give the nod to the Titleist 913F.

Same here on the XR & XR16. I have one of each and have hit some monsters off the tee with them, like farther than my F8+ driver or my XHOT dirver or my G LS Tec driver. I still go back to those two XR's no matter what other fairway woods I try.

[apologies in advance if this is a taboo for posting in GWRX...] MGS does a nice job of highlighting the top performers of 2018 although some have questioned their metrics and method of sampling when it comes to developing their rankings. That said, I feel as though they do a nice job presenting a number of data points across many makes/models to help readers choose which clubs they would like to purchase.

Now, if this is a question that will look to spur a new purchase, my suggestion would be to get fit for a 3-wood no matter which manufacturer you decide to go with. I've always found fairway woods to be clubs that can stay pretty relevant in one's bag for many years down the road, meaning the upfront investment is well worth the extra $ now. Seeing lot's of responses to clubs made several years back, I think this serves to prove my point. I'm still gaming the RBZ Stage 2 with a stronger setup and have yet to switch out of it. I recently hit both the M3 & M4 Tour in a fitting and saw no noticeable improvement. Not to say these aren't better clubs, because they are. Just not it my hands.

Lastly, when getting fit, it's important to be specific with your rep as to what you're looking for out of a fairway wood. Many players are using a 3 wood for their approach shots and might require something that has a makeup which allows them to launch the ball higher with a bit more spin. Conversely, some may just want something in the bag as an alternative to the driver when the latter isn't keeping the ball in play. Both may lead your fitter down a slightly different path.

Sorry for the long-winded response but I hope this can help! Best of luck!

I loved my 906F4 with Proforce V2. Currently game the standard Rogue with hzrdus yellow. Easy to elevate but keeps the spin off for off the tee.

This was due to use. Warming up on the range before a round and was devastated when it happened. Hit a ball and crack I look at the club and the broken off piece was sitting in the club head. This was one of the only clubs no matter what else I tried nothing could beat it. Callaway was terrific in replacing the club head with an Epic SZ for me but its just not the same, so sad......

I love my G400 Stretch -- easy pickup and long off the turf, and great off the tee. Only downside is the low spin creates no stopping power. But for me -- I am just trying to get around a green with this club, not hold a green.

I've always like titleist fairways. Loving my 917f2.

I agree. The 917 F2 is an amazing club. Forgiving and fairly long.

I have always liked the TEE fairways, and currently they have pushed my driver out of the bag. I have 2 TEE EX9 Tours (13* and 17*) and I have the CBX in 13*. Haven't decided which I like better between the 13* options, and one will eventually win out. CBX is better and longer off the tee, but the EX9 Tour is money off the turf.

I can’t get rid of my xhot pro. I have bought and tested just about every new 3 wood out there and I haven’t found one yet that out performs it... yet.

Couldn't agree more. I've been playing the xhot line for about 4 years and every time I see one used in a local shop, I've been buying backups. I've had 2 heads crack on me so far, but can't find anything that beats it for ballspeed, ideal launch (for me), and consistency.

For comparison, I put the Rogue Sub Zero and the King LTD in the bag briefly. They are as good as the xhot, but nothing compliments a line of clubs more than if nothing in 5 years is any better.

On a side note, the M2 just didn't fit my launch conditions, but for others, also a wise choice.

My vote goes to the G400 with Project X Yellow. My TaylorMade's may have been a tad longer, but these actually find fairways and targets. Super easy to hit. Only complaint is, I wish they had a model in 4 wood. (16.5 degrees) for better gapping.

I usually buy a new 3 wood every other year, but eventually go back to my G15. It is much shorter in distance with today's standards with the 15.5 loft and shorter shaft, but it just goes straight. I should just be happy with it and use it as a 4 wood, but that would make too much sense and I wouldn't be able to reply to post like this.

Totally agree woth this! Handicap fluctuates between 1 and 4 depending on time of year. Swing speed 103 to 105 mph with driver.

I switched to an xr pro four wood 16.5* a few years ago. Never looked back. Better carry which is important in Florida's wet conditions and very much more accurate. Also makes the distance gaps more manageable with 4 wood, three hybrid, four iron thru wedges.

For me it's the Callaway XR16 standard head with a Fubuki Ax f65. But I recently picked up a Callaway BBA 816 14* head to try. Partly just to try it, but also for the adjustability. Right now I choose between my XR16 5 wood and an Apex 20* hybrid. I could possibly crank the loft up on the BBA to a strong 4 wood along with the 20* hybrid and see if the gapping is better.

Mizuno GT180 for me. play it at 14*, weight back. Sits open and flat and the head shape reminds me a little of my beloved 913f. Honestly, I tried 5 fairway woods this year and this thing just fits my eye.

3-woods are all about confidence for me. This gives it to me. And I've not seen another person with the same club the whole year

I have tried them all and nothing can out perform my SLDR TP Tour Spoon. I can hit it off the deck or the tee. My buddies are always asking me why do I need a driver when I hit the 3w so solid. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

I know it hasn't been released yet but i hit the new M5 3 wood and it is a beast! I'm a low ball hitter and don't hit it very far so i use my 3-wood a pretty good amount but i struggle hitting it high. When i hit the new M5 3 wood i was launching high af. I'm looking forward to it being released because it will be going right into my bag.

Rogue for me as well. Long and easy to hit. I didn't think anything would get my Big Bertha 816's out of the bag and Rogue was able to do that.

GC I've noticed that you played the Callaway BB alpha 816 3 wood and have moved on. I too have the alpha 816 and like it especially at setup, for some reason I feel the urge to pursue another 3 wood. Could you explain why you changed?

I am in the swme boat. Used a Razr Ex 4w for years and loved it. Longest I have hit, workable and confident. Had a Spx Tour shaft too.

Swicthed to the 816 Alpha 16* and am just not feeling it. Its consistant and fairly long but I am not confident and now I cannot go back. The Razr just doesn’t work for me now and I am stuck.

What has worked for me is a Tour Issue Mini 16* and while its not easy off the deck I can shape it easy and have confidence. But really want to make Callaway work.

- Something that continues to go long off the tee in the fairway
- Something that is a fairway finder when needed and long
- Something that high, consistent and helps with par 5’s
-  Something to help with long par3’s and short par 4’s

-  Something metal, lots of them and go the gaps I need
- Something metal, 2x of them and helps me 120y and in
- Putters - limited rotation because I cannot afford misses

Golf is what you make of it.  Play grateful and accepting. We are all lucky to have it.

Rather than expecting lets all try and appreciate instead.
Treat people the way you want to be treated
