Hyperbole aside, this is obviously a pretty amazing occurrence and you love to see it happen.

Don't know enough to declare the greatest, but it is the greatest I've seen whether live or on some kind of film.

 

In a different context, I could see arguments for Tiger's and Sarazen's, I just put this one in a totally different class of great given it's an am and the challenges involved. Love it.

Great story, and great inspiration. But the champ still has to be the only ace scored on a par 4 in PGA history, by Andrew Magee in the 2001 Phoenix Open, on a 332-yard hole.

And just to make sure it would never be duplicated, his ball bounced off the putter of a player in the group ahead before it went in the hole.

While there are more than a few famous HIO that some are aware of there are two that actually decided a RC match and a PGA Tour event in a playoff. Famous doesn't mean more important.

It was pretty dark during that playoff and Byrd had to be told it went in. He couldn't see it. Technically not a walk off because he hit first so his opponents in the playoff (Cameron Percy and Martin Laird) had a chance to match.

A couple of honorable mentions

 

Robert Trent Jones Sr. redesigned Baltusrol in 1948 so it could be toughened to host a future US Open. Among the changes was lengthening the par 3 fourth by seventy yards and fronting the green with a rock walled pond that forced a full carry. The members were not happy and when he came back in 1952 he offered to play the hole with the head pro and a couple of members. After they hit their shots he pulled out a four iron and aced it. He reportedly said, "Gentlemen,I think the hole is eminently fair."

 

Bing Crosby's at #16 at Cypress Point. I think at the time of his death in 1977, he had one of only two aces ever made on the hole.

Plaudits to Mr Hurtubise for a remarkable moment, but Woods' ace in Arizona was epic. Redonkulous even.

Oosthuizen's snooker-esque in-off from JB Holmes' ball on the 16th at Augusta is also a contender.
