Guidance on a lighter iron shaft

A little background: I currently game the PX LZ 6.0 in my JPX 900 forged. I use to play Pings for years and always played the ZZ65. Shoulder surgery forced me into a lighter and softer shaft ( Nippon Pro 950). My shoulder is mostly recovered so 2 season ago I got fit into the PX 6.0. Did not like the feel. Switched to the PX LZ 6.0 and liked its smoothness much better.

I play to a 9-10 and hit my 7 iron 158-162 carry.

While I like the 120 LZ 6.0 in my wedges (weight perspective) - I think I would like a little lighter shaft in the rest of my irons. Logical choice would be try the 5.5 LZ @ 115 weight —- but thought I would check with masses on other ideas. I thought about the Modus 105 but have not hit it yet.

I think your idea is sound. Perhaps change out only the 5-7 irons as well. You would have small steps between your irons and wedges as well as a bit more control on your shorter irons.

The question is why would you like a lighter shaft ?

Is the current 120 gram shaft causing you discomfort ? Are you having trouble swinging the heavier shaft towards the end of the round ?

If not, I guess I don't see the point; certainly not going from a 6.0 120 weight to a 5.5 115 weight. Doubt you could tell the difference.

Personally I prefer the heavier shaft simply because it feels more stable to me. I feel like I have more control over the swing with it. The heavier shaft (130 gr) costs me about 2-3 yards on my 7 iron (~152 carry) but the consistency and dispersion between them and all the lighter shafts I tested was considerably better with my DGS300s.

And since I'm not in any physical discomfort and I don't feel like I'm losing anything with them towards the end of the round, I'm good.

I keep getting gradually lighter shafts as time goes on- I tried the modus 105’s a few years ago in some Srixons and didn’t really see any benefits, but that’s in a slightly slower swing speed (92 mph with driver). I would highly recommend finding a shop with a fitting cart and experimenting with different weight shafts to see what feels best before re-shafting anything, it will save a lot of time and money. Although that’s the kind of thing most WRX’ers enjoy the most in this journey?

FWIW, I now have Mizuno JPX 900 forged with Recoil 95’s.

I was thinking that same thing. Little lighter, touch higher ball flight in the longer irons. I have no pain anymore, get tired at the end of 36 but not 18. Ahh - it is Ski season now so a nice winter project.

Modus 105 is a fantastic shaft. Whether you will like it, you will have to see for yourself.

Does anyone go from heavy shaft, s300 for example to lighter shaft c taper light for example, and like the new ones right away...….I want to go to something lighter but find myself maybe not giving them the proper chance....Anyone find that the lighter shaft has grown on them after awhile.

I always sort of thought that because my wedges were heavy, I'd prefer heavy across my set, but performance and feel-wise dictates the opposite. Lighter long irons seem to suit me much, much better. Ymmv

I was a DG-S300 player for years but was having problems elevating my lower irons, so I made the switch to SteelFiber 95s. The change was pretty easy to make. Definitely easier to swing and got my lower iron elevation back. But after a while I realized that I just wasn't getting the accuracy from the SteelFibers that I was used to having with the S300s. I switched to a set of Project X 5.5 flighted shafts and kept the same trajectory as with the SteelFibers but with better control. I did lose some distance (about a half a club) but my control has improved significantly. It did take a bit to get used to the addition 20g of weight in the Project Xs.

My accuracy improved when I found a shaft weight that my swing liked. For me it’s right about 90 grams. 15 grams lighter or heavier causes unfavorable tempo and timing changes, resulting in less accuracy

Go with what feels best. I got fit on the Mizuno shaft optimizer for a PX 6.5 and. C-Taper ...... I forget the third option, but I’m getting older, I have arthritis and I was gaming the DG X100’s. After the club fitter listen to what I wanted by the way of feel and forgiveness, he put had me hit the Modus 120x and I was sold. The dispersion was tight, the feel was soft and I wasn’t ballooning them, so I am going with what feels best, rather than what is probably most efficient. After all, I’m not on tour where every fraction of a percent adds up in dollar amounts.

Did not play multiple rounds of golf per month until way into my 40's. My first new iron sets I got into were way different ends of the shaft wt. spectrum @ 105g & 128g. As a very ADD golfer whom needs multiple sets to pick 'n play with, I don't have those now a dozen years later, but still game/practice with iron sets that have these variety of shafts with wts. listed:

107g - Modus105,

110g - C Taper Lite,

115g - PX 5.0F,

127g - Modus 125.

I like the longer irons lighter, but where it is the large factor is range time. My front shoulder and lead elbow don't like to hit many balls with the heavier shafted irons, so I have shifted into lighter more often on the weekly range times to save wear on the bod.

For playing, I will also use the heavier sets more when the summer heat here sets in and I am looser overall.

I have played the LZ 6.0 for several seasons, looked at a lighter option in a new set I grabbed to keep cost down.

I got set of the new Mavrik pro irons with the LZ105, testing out tomorrow
