I would point the interested reader towards rule 23 concerning Loose impediments, and the definition of loose impediment which includes snow and ice.

Also, to Kent and others, I know it's kind of obscure, but you should check out thirteen one some time. Real interesting reading. If I could sum it up in one pithy phrase, it might be something like "play it as it lies."

May have to push my luck and try to get to the range today.

Oh, I'm playing after work. Playing until dark or I see a snowflake, whichever comes first.

I don't believe for a second that you're walking off the course when you see a snowflake.

First time I ever met city was for a winter round at Pine Ridge. I played with Goose, Boogs, and Vince (in shorts, of course), and city was behind us with eagle "slow poke" 1997 in tow. We pretty quickly put them in the rear view, and ended up sitting in the clubhouse for about 40 minutes having beers by the fireplace before they came in. We were nice and toasty as we watched snow start coming down sideways, with them still on the course.

Ok guys hypothetical question:

You hand me a 56 titleist wedge with an S grind and tell me to hit five shots from 100 yards. Then you hand me a 56 titleist wedge with an M grind and tell me to hit five shots from 100 yards. Will I have any idea there is a difference?

I demoed wedges on both full shots and chipping today. I had to go inside to let my hands un numb after the full swings. Cold.

I think the biggest differences will be around the greens as others have already posted. Unless you're playing from extremely hard or soft fairways, the sole grind shouldn't matter too much on full shots. Also, whether you have an excessively steep angle of attack will impact the decision too. For me, the M-grind was very versatile around the greens, but I found it dug a lot on partial wedge shots from further out, because I tend to play those with a very steep, punchy swing. The S-grind (I have 200 series Vokeys which are essentially the same) are great on full and partial shots, but not as versatile the closer to the green you get.

Thanks to you and everybody else for the response.

That's exactly why I'm between the two. I can make some pretty bad wedges swing where I stick the club in the ground super steep toe down. Nooot good stuff. I'd like to not exacerbate my own mistakes with a club that is harsh on the miss

That said come end of April I can get up Early and get in scoring zone yardage work each morning before work so I'm hoping to just get better

For certain people (like me, and likely you), wedges are so damn personal. 5 years with wedges is like a long term relationship. You know how she'll perform from any position, and that level of comfort and reliability cannot be understated. She'll always have a place in your heart, even after you move on. I've gone thru 3 or 4 52* wedges trying to replace that BStone J40. Sigh.

Anyway, I'd suggest matching the exact grinds of your 5yr wedges to ease the transition. We all have types that we prefer. Good luck bud.

golf question about a new rule change : how often do you guys actually see spike marks that you think you'd like to fix, but can't because of the rules?

Once a round or more?

Once every few rounds?

Once every 10 rounds?

Once a year?

Never?

Definitely at least once a round I see "spike marks or shoe damage" that I'd like to tap down/do. Especially if you get a course or a round where people seem to enjoy walking/stamping around the cup in their cleats.

BTW the above is a reason I find it tilting when someone that's tending a flagstick stands an inch from the cup rather than standing at arms length.

Last week they showed Justin Thomas walking around before his round on a cart path and it definitely sounded like he was wearing metal spikes.

He might be the one they showed thats wearing the combo spikes - it looks like a soft spike with a metal cleat in the middle? Might be thinking of someone else though.

Adam Sadwin.

He lost right?

There was some dude during the tournament yesterday that was letting loose some big "Baba Boo-eys".

At one point, he yelled out, "Atta Boy Haddy Wagon" to Hadwin.

Hadwin won, for sure. It got close. He ssssssliced that drive into the water with his CALLAWAY 3W on 16. Just a terrible club that lets something like that happen when the pressure is on.

Cantlay had all the mo going into 18 and blew it with his approach.

As Abb alluded to, he hit two stinkers out of the bunker coming in. If he goes 1/2, he's in a playoff. I wonder if in his work coming back, he didn't spend much time in the bunkers.

One of the announcers was talking about how long his backswing was on the first one that he over-shot. And then he hits the second one which came up short and the same guy goes, "he really shortened his backswing on that one" (or something). Except, he didn't. Not at all. He just hit way more behind the ball. These guys just say stuff, and then they show the replay and if it disagrees with what they say, they just keep plowing right through their explanation. Football announcers do it all the time.

I've heard there are a number of guys that wear these:

They might as well be metal spikes still.

Don't forget that was the day of Mikey Five Fingers.

Also, tat day eagle was talking about using a different putter than his normal one because of slow greens and I'm thinking, "don't you just swing harder?" I should have got a sense of some of you guys from that.

Also, I remember coming into the clubhouse and all 4 of them buried in their phones when I was trying to have a beer together and talk about the round. And, I was like, "well, I guess they're internet guys".

He was turrible.

The first green he missed was 6, and he hit a chip that came up like 15 feet short of the hole. Bogey. Those bunker shots on 15 and 18 were trash as well. Moar bogeys.

As to my question :

I almost never see spike marks I want to fix. I either don't inspect the surface close enough or I just don't think they make a difference. Maybe if I played on more pristine greens, I might start to notice them. Maybe it's a good putting mindset not to take micro-imperfections into account.

DC and I are definitely at different ends of the OCD spectrum.

Not that it's OCD to want to fix a spike mark. I just don't know if there's a better term for it. . .maybe just more "attention to detail".

I've definitely missed putts because of imperfection of surface, but I don't think it ever costs me more than a stroke every 5 rounds, and I usually think it's something bigger than a spike mark.

Speaking of metal spikes, I think it'd be cool if a course got a couple guys with Javelin shoes with like 3" spikes on them and walked around on the greens every couple of weeks. I'd like to be one of those guys.

I wonder if that would help the greens

I think that's what they do at hobbits.

And, no, it doesn't.

I remember a lot of things about that round, vividly.

Vince was wearing shorts, and it was freezing.

City whipped a sixer out of his bag on the second hole.

Eagle parked his pull cart by the third tee, then played up to the green on 2. We took all the clubs out of his bag after teeing off.

That was the first time I heard about, and witnessed "The Goose Line" on 18 at PR. Over the trees that cut into the fairway on the left side.

City was wearing swish pants, and his first introduction being "HEY, ARE YOU BOOGS?" (note: he actually did say that too Boogs)

Mrs. Eagle1997 came to pick eagle up after the round. What a brave woman, to pick her husband up from a round with random dudes from the internet.

If you dont know Cantlay's backstory this article is from February but still pretty good. Gets a stress fracture in his back. Four weeks later watches his best friend/caddie get hit by a car and the guy dies while he is stitting with him.

Big fan. Much rooting.
