Flagstick Tending Talk Monday : Where do you stand/expect others to stand when you tend the stick?

I've always done my best to stand on the high side of the hole from the perspective of the incoming putt (without having my feet in somebody else's line, of course) at arms length from the hole.

I ask because I actually had a threadzien ask me to stand on the low side of the stick for a putt one time. I was happy to oblige, but just thought it was a unique request. Made me question my entire life of flagstick tending.

I stand arms length away, on the opposite side of the hole from the putter's, or puttee's (?) line.

Edit: I had this picture in my tinder profile at one point. Chicks dig basset hounds

I'm so old that every time someone talks about tinder, I momentarily have to remind myself of the difference between tinder and grinder.

I was like, "I thought he had a GIRLfriend."

Not that there's anything wrong with that. #seinfeld

I think Abb is referring to me with the flagstick thing. I don't like players standing on the high side when they're tending for me. When I'm visualizing my putt, I'm tracing a line with my eye coming in from the ball and curving towards the hole on the high side. I don't like seeing a person standing right there. I might subconsciously aim at them.

I don't really care what they're doing on my through line. i'm not looking there.

Tangentially related to this discussion, it would seem that folks who learned the game and played a lot under the tutelage of an elder (whether it be a father, uncle, instructor, etc.) seem to have a more clear and thorough understanding of classic golf etiquette.

I know I personally picked the game up as a teenager, without any family or anything that played. I essentially grew up playing the game around a bunch of peers, at a $hit hole golf course.

I'd probably have a different view of things if somebody had taught me more formally, or I came up playing the game in more of a country club atmosphere.

I am, but wasn't gonna call it out. It's not like I think you're wrong and I'm right or something like that. It was just unexpected to me. That experience made me legitimately question my flagstick tending form.

It's whatever the person wants. Probably below the hole is more common.

I think the other part of is it when I asked you to move, you were, "what!! you cray cray!!"

Now, that's bad etiquette.

Personally I think its odd that anyone that's putting would choose the low side. Since 95% of us are going to miss lowside, now you have the tender standing either 1 - where your putt could be rolling through or 2 - where your *next* putt could have to roll through.

But then again I dont think I've ever moved someone thats tending the pin. From 60 feet away I'm usually not thinking that far ahead.

See, I just #dontsellpeopleshortDTstyle and assume they are always going to make the 50 footer, so I avoid standing on or close to their line, and therefore stand on the low side.

Completely unrelated, but I've been enjoying black pepper crusted deli meat recently... pepper crusted turkey, ham, beef, etc. So good with cheddar and some dijon or spicy mustard. Bread is optional.

Unless their line is a putt taking a 90 degree turn when it it reaches hole high about 3ft outside the cup, or they're putting past the hole to a slope that feeds it back to the hole, I'm never in their line standing on the high side of the hole. Totally get it if somebody just doesn't want to see me standing there though. Just never thought about it.

Spot on. always have some in the fridge for snacking purposes. Miracle Whip is.....dressing?....of choice.

Yes, it's an excellent post drinking snack. Also nicely paired with Cheez Its, preferably pepper jack.

Only because there's no vindaloo flavored Cheez Its.

Just kidding.

Thanks for the enlightenment of Michael "Fing" Breed.

Don't tell me I dont have the strength to yank that flag out (maybe not TR flag poles or wherever DT used the "illegal" size flagpoles for his eagle) but those puny ones...pssshh.

I usually straddle the line with the flagstick bent between my legs to make it look like a huge peen pointing right at the golfer.

Rarely am I asked to move.

Spending my formative years running amuck at Glade Valley with a bunch of fellow 15-18 year old classmates, it was 10000000x more likely this would happen than somebody asking the flag stick be tended differently.

You guys wanna see some food p0rn?

This weekend we were having a couple folks over, and I thought I'd make meatball subs from scratch. I made this ridiculous rustic crusty Italian bread in round loaves, tomato sauce with butter and onions, and meatballs from beef and pork (which I got at a farmer's market on 97, in Brookville, or something like that). Really good parmigiano reggiano, mozz, asiago, and fontina.

So, I cut each loaf in half, hollowed it out, stuffed in sauce, meatballs, and cheese, wedged them into a casserole dish, and dropped a ton of cheese all over the top and baked. It was ri-meatball-diculous.

So, this morning I'm talking to the wife about supper this week and mentioned spaghetti and she goes, "I'm not eating spaghetti after I ate that whole god d@mn meatball sub on saturday." She was mad at me over the sub.

She actually apologized for cursing out my sub. And she skipped supper on Sunday.

The pics actually didn't do them justice. . .

And I thought my feta stuffed turkey burger topped with avocado, chili, jalapeños, blue cheese and a fried egg was delicious. (Imagine--too hungry to take pics)

Here's one on a plate. Like I said, the lighting wasn't good. The color difference between bread, sauce, and meat was more pronounced. You can see the caramelized bottom (maillard process) of the meat ball on the left.
