Some cool watches in here. I was talking to my dad and he said the amount of money he has spent on watches is insane. Not a cheap hobby by any means.

Your right there when my mom and dad closed there jewelry store they had right at 72 Rolexs and boxes and boxes of others like invicta and oreints and seikos. Pure insanity if you ask me. I don't share the passion my dad use to too. I'm a going to put together a Steve McQueen explorer as soon as I navigate a case.
LMAO, I actually combined the two, lol.

A guy and I were about $2000 apart on one of my pieces and I was walking around his car with him as he was going to his trunk to get the Cartier that was to be a part of the trade out of his brief case. When he opened his trunk, there was a thin Mizuno iron box that was opened on one end in the trunk.

I asked what he played and he said "sure the hell not those," and he went on to tell me that he ordered the MP-14's and because of all of the halabaloo over Tiger playin them(This was 1997). Well, he was a very "soft" 18 cap, lol, and there was no way that I could see him swingin those. Well, I play my irons two seasons because prior to '12, my grooves are shot after that, and I was in my second season with my 14's.

So I said, "You throw in the 14's and it's done."

He looked at me with these wide eyes and a disbelieving look, and I said "yep," and put out my hand.

Hey, I probably got shaved for $1000-1300, but I didn't have to buy irons the next year, lol.

So, you can combine the two ;)

Have a great day Guys :)

No doubt. Watch collecting can be closer to car collecting in terms of cost.

I'm astounded. Some of you guys are wearing $1K+ watches as your every day timepiece? I just retired my Citizen Eco Drive dive watch because I beat the crap out of it to the point where the crystal was too scratched. Just strapped on a Sieko chronograph divemaster solar powered, and I don't imagine it having a much longer lifespan. I need a dive watch because I spend most of my summer in the water when I'm not on the golf course - I snorkel, fish, and kayak/fish. I can't imagine giving a priceless timepiece the pounding I give mine. I almost thought the $150 I paid for my Sieko was too much.

BTW, you guys know that kids these days don't even wear or have an interest in watches? I bought all my girl's kids watches, and they don't wear them - "I don't need a watch, and no one else wears them...."

This is one of my casual pieces, a stainless Cartier Roadster. This is the mid-size model, and I have a full size Roadster chrono and sometimes I'll wear this piece with a jacket/tie and I have my second button on my shrt cuffs moved over so my cuffs, while not tight, are snug amd don't slide up my wrist. LMAO, that annoys the sh*t out of me. Anyway, a large watch tears up my cuff edges, lol.
I wear the roadster mostly with jeans/khakis.

The Blancpain is a Platinum triple date(day/date/month) moon phase(ceramic dial) that was part of a trade. For those not familiar, Blancpain is sort of a smaller, boutique type house. I just liked the dial, lol.

Have a great day :)

can someone provide a primer on watch buying? I've been thinking about getting something soon but don't know enough to pony up money. I know Rolex is understood to be overpriced but that's about it

http://gearpatrol.co.../style/watches/

alot of their content on watches is for the super high priced, but they do have a few articles on getting into watch collecting, and budget watches

also this is what I'm wearing, (family heirloom passed down to me after dad's death) Omega Seamaster 200 Omegamatic

A understated great watch I've had a long time, that keeps perfect time is this rose gold Mido.

I'm searching for the perfect band, as the original was a tad small, and I wore it a few years with the band on my Heuer currently. It needs the crystal polished a little, its pre world war 2 I think 30s

C95DC19D-0096-4BDF-8F87-4530D92731F6_zpsuworf4ov.jpg

Just seeing the watch like that makes with think of the scene in Pulp Fiction with Captain Koons and Butch. HAHA

That was one of grossest scenes ever!

I scrubbed it with bleach, and may never wear it again. Uncomfortable hunk of metal.

Bought this for my wife, and she never wears it. Maybe 5-6 times in 10 years

Some very nice timepieces.

Mine each have a story behind them. I look for unique and special editions.

Rolex - My wedding present.

Helson Sharmaster 600 Ploprof - Pays homage to one of the greatest dive watches ever made. I am in the process of looking into getting the real 1970's Omega Ploprof

Halmilton Kacki - Is a replica of some of the WWII watches and used to be made near me in Lancaster some time ago.

Omega Seamaster Professional - James Bond Quantum of Solance, 5 year anniversary present an always wanted a Bond Watch. Had to put leather strap on because the metal I couldn't wear.

Casio Pathfinder - Titanium, and no battery needed. Only watch I ever had that works on GSM.

Adidas - Only 1000 made, it's all ceramic and plus i wanted a white watch.
I had never really seen one that caught my eye, because 90% of my purchases have been estate sales and to a lesser degree, auctions. It's just that if it's a serious estate, you get the dealers(Pros), with deep pockets and it's like steppin onto the tee with a Tour pro, lol, it's gonna be a long afternoon.

Again, I was lucky because this was a Physician and friend of my Father's and he knew that I really liked it. This was basically a custom build because the retail release was only in 18k white and yellow, though this guy only wears platinum. I traded him a platinum Vash Dual time Flyback that I never wore, lol. he wanted "1/1" and they said no, they don't do that unless It was it's an issued collection. Still, I've never seen another identical, so it worked out, lol.

To those that aren't collectors, buy your watches from Authorized Dealers, either new or pre-owned. You'll pay more for it but you'll know it's legit and have a dealer to help you if there is ever an issue.

Agree, but sometimes deals are way too good to pass up. I had a guy that could get me 50% off current model APs with the new in house movements. Plastic still on the watch. A normal dealer will give you 20% off if your a good client.
ABSOLUTELY ON THIS!!

I have an IWC Big Pilot that's pictured below and I love this watch for casual. This and the earlier pictured Santos and the Vic Officer's are my three main "everyday" watches. Well, about 5-6 years ago, there was a flood on the virtual market of Russian Pilot Watches, actual watches worn by the pilots and government issued, the full Monty. You know where this is goin.

I actually spoke to the wife(supposed wife, lol) of the dealer and at the time, my watch repairman, who'd been doing my work on any piece that needed attention, regardless of brand, was familiar with this man's family because my man had come from the same town, and as he was a Jewish Gentleman, and so was the guy(and his family) from the "old country," I threw caution to the wind and ordered one for $1200. It got to me and looked amazing. Worn, though normal wear, which like a good pair or worn Bass loafers, looked great and adds to the overall image and look.

So I put it on the next day and off I went. About an hour later, I looked down to catch the time, and it was dead *ss dead. No movement. And it had stopped like 10-15 minutes after I initially set it. I figure that this was due to travel, bla, bla, bla, as it was supposedly circa 1952-53 so it was a winder(non-automatic) and let's face it, Russian watch making was not on par with the Swiss ;). However same thing- nothing. I canceled my two appointments and straight to my man's shop I went. We had known each other and I had gone to him for 17+ years, and as he was an Orthodox Jew, I told him that he was my only Orthodox friend, and he said that I was his only Catholic/Baptist(Don't ask ;) ) friend, so I trusted him implicitly.

He broke open the watch and inside was a rusty, almost frozen garbage movement. He came to find out that most of these watches had literally been thrown out by the government when the watch quit running and so these were the watches being sold.

He sincerely looked as distraught as me and though he could not then, due to time difference, he later that day called back to a brother still living in the town and found out that while this guy's family was indeed a family of the highest character, this son was an idiot that basically the family "disowned," because he had dated a woman outside his religion amd while his family were watch makers and jewelers, and he had acquired these skills, he was a a scumbag and crook, lol.

The next day he called me and told me to come over to his shop that he had something for me. I showed up later that day and he walked out of his back room and reached into his shirt pocket and hands me a pre-owned Rolly GMT. While I had a few Rolly's, I didn't have the GMT and that was one that I told him to keep am eye out for. He gave it to me. I initially said absolutely no way, and I was adament, no frickin way. He told me to sit and he told me a parable that I won't take your time with here, however the bottom line was when he vouched for this man, it was as though I was dealing directly with him. No excuses, no ifs ands or buts, no rationalizations.

And in his eyes, HE had screwed me.

And he had to make it right.

I could see how passionate he felt, and this went deeper than a little case full of metal plates and springs.

I took the GMT.

Sorry for the drawn out story though TS's words are so true, even if you are a collector, because when emotions become involved, and I don't care if it's on a golf course, in an auction, or lookin at a picture on the box, well, bad things usually happen. There's no sicker feeling in one's than seeing that they've been had, especially when the sums that are usually involved for a time piece are more than pocket change.

On yea, if ya see the Russian Pilot's on the net, cuz they're still out there, forgetaboutit :)

Have a Great day!!

My Best,
Richard

I'M KIDDING!!! :)

You're absolutely right regarding the aura surounding Swiss timepieces, however it's not much different than the same aura that surrounds "German Technology(ie., Benz & Bimmer)," or "Japanese Forged(Fourteen or Mizzy)." This is the society that we live in. It's a status based society. I once, for the hell of it, put a Rolly President's Day/Date, on one of my watch winders in a drawer and along side it a Casio G-Shock. Now I did wear both, though I never reset the time on either and when DST hit, they stayed in the drawer till I pulled em to check their accuracy. Long story short, at one year, the Casio was 4 1/2 minutes more accurate, which was pretty amazing cuz I thought that it would have been more, considering this was an older Day/Date, though for those familiar with the price tag on a Platinum Day/Date, well, many would expect perfection regarding time.

I like time pieces because, as I said earlier, I like the beauty in them. With many, it's like wearing a piece of art(WTH ;) too much time and too many meds, LMAO)

Anyway Pure, I was kidding :)

Have a great week-end

I've got a thing for tonneau shaped cases, lol.

The first, is a Franck Muller Conquistador SC Triple Date Moon Phase(18k WG). The second is one of my faves(if you haven't noticed, my "faves" change on a routine basis. My shrink says that this is fine with watches and putters, though it's part of the reason that I'm still single, lol. And I pay to hear this sh*t ;) ). I like the look of brown croc strap with black dial for casual. The second is a Breguet Heritage Day/Date(18k WG).

And the third pic is my IWC Big Pilot. It's saweeeeet and it's much larger than any other pieces that I wear, coming in at 46mm. I wanted one badly, though at the time, the "grey" market was scarce, however I do see more out there now than when I was looking. The 5111 movement is a serious movement, regardless of whether one thinks that the Swiss aura is much hype. This baby's the real deal. This is the SS model, and I could've gone with the WG model, in fact, it was #89/200 in a special release. However there was something about having a WG Pilot's watch, especially the Great Pilot, that screamed pretentious. A gold Pilot's watch? As I've never really talked about this before, I don't know if I conveyed my thoughts clearly, plus I'm a tad foggy right now, lol. I hope that that makes sense.

I prefer my dress pieces to be the old traditional 38mm(sorta like the traditional 35° 7i), 40 tops, unless it's gonna be the professional equivalent of a d*ck swingin contest, with all of the superficial trappings that come with that, then I'll throw the Rolly Day/Date on, lol. I might wear that 4-5 times a year. I really do prefer the understated.

Have a good one-

My Best,
Richard

Nice. I actually had a similar looking Blancpain Leman a couple of years ago that I bought brand new and sold brand new. Actually made some money on it as well (first time for everything!)

Again, I was lucky because this was a Physician and friend of my Father's and he knew that I really like it.

Have a nice evening

My Best,
Richard

is your collection insured? those probably cost more than a normal house:)
out of curiosity why don't u take it to the BP ad and have it appraised? there
could be relevant info on this particular piece.
Yes, I have them insured under my home owners, though a few pieces have stand alone policies. I would definitely check with your carrier because the dollar amount at which a valuation(appraisal) is recquired varies, usually from $1000-2000. I also have a few pieces that have to be secured in a "secure, fire proof box," LMAO, cuz that's basically a safe, which is exactly what I have. I have to take "satisfactory precautions against loss or damage." Yea, the BP has been appraised, and they(BP) do have the original info packet(detailed descri[tion, pics, etc.), though like many "custom" products, there is usually no increased value, and the value can even be diminished. This is OT, however it pertains to a Circle T Newport that I had and it had "RPJ II" on the face toe & "Richard P" on the back heel bumper & "Jacobs II" on the back toe bumper. Well, I was told that to sell it like that I should deduct $4-500 from the going price. I was pissed, lol, so I kept it.

I am currently undergoing a radiation treatment that is not fully covered by my insurance company, so I have to pick up more than had I undergone conventional treatment, though since I had chemo/radiation less than 2 years ago for basically the same cancer, I had to take a different route.

Bottom line, I had to come up with cash, and more than I had at my disposal without going into my retirement and assuming the large penalties for doing so. I sold 6 pieces and that will handle my obligation. I never really purchased a watch as an "investment," though I can say that I have #1, never purchased a time piece at retail, and #2, always paid/traded less than FMV, except for three cases, one being the one I mentioned here, where I took a hit of $13-1500 and two others that were both under $2000 each. All three were to individuals, and I just looked at it as I was doing a nice thing because in all three cases, they wanted my watch more than I wanted theirs.

Have a nice week-end

Richard

I don't remember who it was exactly, but I think it was Blancpain. They make extremely custom pieces with even porno-esque figures doing crazy things.
not blancpain. i know what your talking about
its Ulysiss nardin
maker of the freak tourb and the anvil chime watch.
Yea, I'd they're are a few UN pieces that I'd love to get(not the Freak, lol), though #1, the models that I'm lookin for probably didn't sell a lot of em, so there won't be a big "grey" market, and they're pieces unfortunately don't bring a proportional/comensurate value with resale. Talk about art, UN has some amazing pieces. That's what I was speaking of earlier regarding buy/sell price. They're are only two pieces that I would Absolutely never sell, so if/when I have to sell something, I don't want to wait a month and hope someone happens to look who likes that particular pieces.

Sorta like my Bro when he sells his clubs, he's got a 118-122 SS so it's a small, finite market. HaHa, it takes him 2-3 times as long as the "middle" ground clubs.

Have a great day

My Best,
Richard
