Anyone gaming an 3+ year old driver?

Still loving my G15 9* w/ Blueboard 63S. Only thought I've had of moving on was to find a 10.5* head to use with this shaft so I can get the launch just a touch higher. I used to pretty much buy a new driver every year until this one.

Taylor Made Drivers are in Dog years.
So any TM driver this past year is 7 years old
already.
Very true. Seems like they have so many more models. In dog years my R580xd is probably near 70 years old. Practically an antique.
The good news is that even though some might consider it an "antique", it still was designed at the point when the faces for all intents and purposes, had been pushed to the limit for COR or "trampoline effect"

I have an R9 & 3 TP Burners, but nothing beats my 910D3. There's a reason it's on everyone's "classic" list; better than anything new I've hit, including SLDR & Jetspeed, IMO.

Some combo of any or all:

Ping G400 LST 10* w/ Px Evenflow Blue 75 6.0
Rogue SZ 15* w/ Px Evenflow Blue 75 6.0
Cally 416 19* Hybrid w/ Diamana S+ 82g Stiff
4-PW: Callaway (OG) Apex w/ KBS PGI 80g / Bridgestone J40 Combo 4-P w/ Steelfiber i95 Stiff

R11 dot, and before that a TXXXXX R11 (both with the same Graf New Blue X shaft). Workable and long.

I have a Jetspeed on order though...brand new here in Australia for $199 - I couldn't resist having a nibble. But it'll have to do a mighty job to supplant the dot.

With all the tech churn, it feels like its 3+ years old, but I'm enjoying my Mizuno MP-650 driver. It replaced my 913D3.

Ping G2 8.5 with Grafalloy Blue X tipped 1" and spined (fantastic lack of dispersion at this setting) fitted by Ping Wrx, for me.

Don't laugh though until 2 years ago, I was playing a Titleist 975D, 7.5 with Ultralite X in (naughty I know, as it was non-conforming) circa 1997, But I never played, or won, anything.

There is an older guy in my golf league that still plays a 983K with an Aldila NV shaft in it. I am always surprised at how well (and how far) he hits that thing. It makes you wonder what he might get out of a driver with more modern technology, but then again....if it still works well, why mess around?

I played a 983K with a Speeder shaft way back when in 1998/99 and loved it. Seeing this guy almost makes me want to get another one. Almost....

I am posting just out of curiosity. Lately when I play with people I know or end up joining others at my local courses everyone seems to comment on my "old, non-adjustable driver". I am currently gaming a Callaway Diablo Edge Tour, 9.5*, with an Aldila VS Proto 60 s-flex shaft. I hit it about 280 yards, almost all carry. I have no intention of changing clubs anytime soon (I actually have a brand new backup, sames specs, in my basement).

When I ask those with adjustable drives many seem to have not been fit and are playing the thing on standard settings anyway. Not that I play from the short grass 70% of the time, but those I play with who have adjustable drivers don't seem to be driving it much better than me.

Just my observations.

Any others out there in the same boat as me.

The 983 is sneaky long. I believe my old 983E could hold its own against about anything distance wise. It has my vote for best $30 driver out there.

The thing about those 983's was that the bore-through hosel was a PITA. They made any shaft that didn't have a long tip section play like a pipe and changing the shaft altogether was a challenge.

Back in the day, a lot of guys would just cut the shaft off at the top of the hosel and drill it out about 2" to get the new shaft to play true to flex. I've since learned how to remove bore-through's using a heat rod, but it's time consuming. Now, with many drivers having adapters you rarely see a bore-through anymore.

I agree that the 983 was long. Even with the old Titleist Professional 90 balls you could bomb them out there.

+1 excellent combo high launch head with low spin shaft. I also have another 905R head mated to a Rombax 7Zo8 and it's the same results....and nothing beats the classic look of that head.

My backup is a 8.5 degree 983K with a Graphite Design Purple Ice. The thing is just long as my gamer. Just not as forgiving. I do love the thwack when I hit it.
