Oh, that kenneth smith set! Does it have the leather grips with #s on the end? My favorite club is a 19 wedge which is in my bag today. It's just so nice from 30 yards in. They are just such beautifully made clubs. And I do find the names interesting too. Part of golf's draw is heritage and history. Incidentally, my clubs were custom for Art Hill and Sally Butz. No relation, that i know of.

That's a great haul.

BTW thats no on the leather grips, they have the black & green swing rite grips. I always look into the old owners names on my gear as well. It interesting to see for some odd reason.

ok, I forget....what does the "JP" stand for?

Joe Phillips, who was Wilson's Tour rep at that time.

I never was sure exactly what was special about the grind.  The sole certainly doesn't have the contours available as stock models today.  It doesn't get narrower toward the heel, and it's been so long since I've seen one in person I don't recall if it had reduced bounce toward the heel.  It's a great wedge, but I just don't know what "custom grind" meant in this case.

Thanks....I don't exactly know what is "custom" - I have a number of Hogan custom grinds & they all looks the same to me...there is probably someone in the forum who knows alot more

"Custom Grind" is on all of those wedges of that model and the JP II.  It doesn't mean someone had it custom made.  Wilson made thousands upon thousands of those wedges with that stamping.

I just don't know what was special about them.  Back then the Ping products were about the only stock offerings that had any enhancements to their sole design.  "Custom Grind" implies there was something about the design that was different than a stock model, but nothing in the catalogs or the advertising ever said what it was.

Agree that I'm not sure what the "Custom Grind" is supposed to mean, and the grind itself doesn't look anything special.

The JP wedges I have are all great, but like you, I'm not sure what makes the grind special or custom. They are quite heavy and have lots of weight low down, so perhaps that's what makes them good in the sand. They look like fairly low bounce, wide-sole wedges to me. Maybe that's what suits my game.

Here are pictures of the three I have. One JP sand wedge, one JP II sand wedge, and one JP II  pitching wedge. Incidentally, the Grind doesn't look particularly different to the one on the Wilson Tom Kite 60* wedge I have (last picture), but the TK wedge has more offset.

I remember an early 80s Golf Magazine article by Ken Venturi where he stated for maximum spin wedges should have "wide soles and no bounce."  He was on Wilson's staff at the time and may well have had some influence in the design of their wedges, although the stock models had at least some bounce.  The TK 60 had very little as I recall.

I like a bit of offset on a sand wedge.  Makes me feel as though I can get it under the ball more easily.  I never had any trouble pulling them on full shots because the clubface and what it does is my responsibility, or at least it's supposed to be.  We don't see too many wedges with offset these days.

Are these from 53.

They were purchased with a set of 1950 Spalding Stainless irons,  so I’m going with that year.  Don’t have the club information resources like some do here.

so what would distinguish a '50 SS iron from a '53?

Beats me.  I posted the pictures of the set and a couple edumacated folks said 1950 irons.  Like I posted, I don't have research materials for this old of clubs.

Do you have a tape stripping tool, curved end w/ball grip…pretty sure Golfworks sells one, I purchased one from Golfsmith decades ago…no real problem removing tape no matter how old. I’ve resharpened the curved enda number of times.

Check on the bay-thingie - you might find a Golfsmith one. A few years back, I lost my traveling case & had to replace everything, most of which were Golfsmith tools. That bay thingy & etsy were invaluable. I probably spent more than if I’d just bought from Golfworks…but I just think the quality was better
