It just me or are a lot of pros switching to Nippon Iron Shafts?

I just picked up a u45 18* iron, am thinking about a 105x in it to match my 120x's. Little lighter for some swing speed, worried about kicking that iron up too high in the air though...I want it for a driving iron.

Any experience with this?

I picked up a 105x shaft, put it in a MP Fli HI head....totally different profile than the 120x! Have a 120x coming for my u45.

Any thoughts on traj and spin in 105x hardstepped versus 130x softstepped? I may order a set with no up charge 105x hs...coming from 130x, but never tried the 105. Tried everything else though, 120, 125, 130, spb....

I currently play a set of Nippon wv 115 wedge shafts in my wedges and modus 105 in my irons. I'm interested in the modus wedge shaft and wondering if it has the same feel and release as the modus 105.

how do you like the wedge shafts? I am looking into switching them from KBS Tour V's

I like the wv wedge shaft. Though to me, they feel better with more of a 3/4 type shot and pitches than a full swing.

I have never hit the 130x's, but I have the 105x's hard stepped in my MP-68's. I am a high ball hitter but the 105's have brought down my trajectory, by site, quite a bit from my x100's. I have not be able to get on trackman and test the spin or trajectory (hoping to do so soon), but the 105x hard stepped seem to be a great shaft for me. I would definitely recommend trying them.

I learned something of interest this past week after purchasing a set of Modus ST Protos... Nippon shafts have unique raw length shaft lengths for all irons... I always new the PW and 9i to use the same 37" raw shaft length and increase +1/2" but Nippon does not use the same for PW and 9i... PW 37", 9i 37.5", 8i 38", and so on. They will build sets with 37" in both as a sort of hard-stepping tweak for feel/preference.

There's a handful of 125 users as well, most notably being Keegan.

I was just going to ask why not much love for the 125's

I don't know why, maybe the pro's need more spin since they typically play former greens? I liked them the best of the modus line, too bad I have to sell them as I had to go graphite.

Interesting. The Modus 125 tends to spin just a tad more than X100 and the players that do use Tour125 were usually DG converts looking for slightly higher launch and slightly higher spin which for most players the Tour125 does. Keegan plays the 125X hardstepped once. The 105 gets all the love because it is higher launch with mid spin and is exceptionally smooth while very stable. Which is unheard of for a 115g shaft. So players looking for high soft controllable shots use it. It also picks up some clubhead speed being so light. So it is win win win win for them. I just can't control my arms/hands with that light of a shaft. I'm not as good as they are to stay disciplined to my timing and I flip it early. I think 120g is about as low as I can go right now. I may try to step it down if Nippon releases a proto they had at the demo day. Play that for a year and then try to go to 105 maybe.

For those with extra length on their irons, how have the 105X worked? Looking at a set with 3/8" increments, so will play 3/4" to 1.5" over length?

Finally had a chance to get my MP-5 and Vokeys out a few times with the Nippon modus 125 in the irons and 52* and the modus wedge 125 in the 56*. Outstanding shafts and definitely have improved my dispersion compared to the many graphite and composite shafts I've been playing the last few years due to joint issues. Hopefully I don't have any issues with joint pain with these, went to midsize grips and put pro soft inserts in them and keeping my fingers crossed.

Sounds like a great build! Love to hear more on how you like the 125 wedge with the 125 irons. And how the joint pain goes with the new sticks.

Mark - Sorry if I have asked or if it has been covered previously but have you hit any of the new Modus3 wedge shafts and if so are the differences just weight or do they have different charecteristics like the different irons shafts do?

And to add to that, if im playing 130's S hsx1 would I go with the 115 or 125?

What do you think about putting a 105X in a 3iron? I was testing a recoil 110X but I'm spinning my 3i fly pro in the low 4K. I play 125X straight in with my irons. Has anyone done that?

They have the same profile but the lighter you go the softer the profile is. But it remains the same. I would go 125 if I were you. That would be a big difference in weight from Tour130 iron shaft to Modus Wedge 115.

The Wedge shafts are pretty soft feeling, lots of kick low at impact. The wedge 125 IMO is similar feel and crispness to an S200 which makes sense since that is the most popular wedge shaft in Japan. Tour130 on the other hand is a firmer profile and heavier. You may be better suited to try the original WV 125, not the new Modus wedge. The original WV was a bit heavier feeling and had a stiffer mid section so it felt more stable. To some a bit clunky and dull though. Depends what you want? Light and crisp or heavy and muted? Or some Tour130 users also prefer the Tour130 in their wedge as well. Maybe try a 130S soft-stepped or tiger stepped to soften it up a little for the wedge play.

So many options. Hard to chose unless you can hit them yourself. Wedge shafts are so personal for feel and fit and how you want the ball to react. Do you sweep or dig/chop. Etc.

Hi guys, I plan to switch to modus 105 shaft from Kbs tour v. What flex should I go on the modus 105 considering I carry my 7 iron about 160 yards with a driver swing speed of 95-100?

Cheers

It all kinda depends on what your looking for? What is your current flight and desired flight, transition, smooth or a hitter type swing?

Desired flight is mid launch. Definitely more towards an aggressive hitter rather than smooth. Able to swing from inside to out. Natural ball shape would be a draw.

leaning towards 105S hardstepped or if you really want the heavier model you could try 105X softstepped if you're aggressie/hitter.

I would agree with Mark, I found the 105 to launch a tad on the higher side(prob due to the weight) so hard stepped 1x just to bring the flight down a touch might be the ticket.

So what's the deal with how the flex plays on the 120? I know they FEEL smooth/softer than flex so to speak. How is the S flex compared to say a S300 DG or 5.5 PX, both shafts i've played before.

Hi Mark and Bogey,

Appreciate the replies. I forgot to add my KBS Tour V Stiff is soft stepped once. So I would be fine with Modus 105 Stiff straight in right?

The 120 feels much smoother than the 5.5 and s300 for me. Much softer in the butt with a very stiff tip section. I went from a 5.5 to a 120x and have better ball flight and dispersion and the shaft will stay with you no matter how hard you go after the ball.

I tried the 105x in a 18* and didnt like the profile of the shaft at all.

The S should be fine though right? Considering I always play a "stiff flex" such as 5.5 or S300? I just don't want these to be too weak
